Existing NICU family centered care models lack the key elements of equity, inclusion and cultural humility. These models were conceived to support families during the stressful life event of an infant's NICU admission. Their development, however, occurred prior to recognition of the medical field's systematic shortcomings in providing equitable care and their impact on outcome disparities for marginalized communities; thus, they do not include cultural or equitable healthcare considerations. Given the significant neonatal care inequities for marginalized groups, incorporating the experience of

BACKGROUND: Cultural competence training has become increasingly common in psychiatric practice across Europe and worldwide, supported by evidence demonstrating improvements in quality of care, clinical effectiveness, and patient satisfaction. Since the publication of the original EPA guideline in 2015, the field has advanced considerably in its theoretical foundations, evidence base, and institutional support. This updated guideline addresses recent developments and challenges in research, policy, and clinical practice.
METHODS: The guideline is based on a systematic meta-review of 15 system

When the COVID-19 global pandemic began, many higher education systems had to restructure their educational delivery system and transition to online learning. This posed a challenge for students in health professions education programs as it impacted their ability to participate in hands-on learning regarding patient care. As a result, the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing developed and implemented simulation-based learning experiences to allow graduate-level social worker, counselor, and psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner students the opportunity to learn as an interdiscip

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual/aromantic, and other sexuality and gender diverse (LGBTQIA+) individuals in Australia experience poor mental health more often than the general population, largely because of systemic discrimination, minority stress and barriers to inclusive, affirmative healthcare.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to support general practitioners in their provision of mental healthcare to LGBTQIA+ people by outlining some specific mental health challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community, highlighting the importance of

Hispanics make up less than 10% of the U.S. population but account for 83,923 (17%) of all U.S AIDS cases and are disproportionately affected by sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Nurses have a mandate to provide culturally competent care, but to do so, they must understand what their clients' needs are and how best to deliver nursing care. A key finding of this exploratory focus group study with newly immigrated Mexican Americans in North Carolina was that respondents were actively striving to prevent HIV or STDs. Their preventive practices for both HIV and STDs centered around a "gonorrhe

This study explored the culturally specific manifestations of interpersonal psychotherapy's (IPT's) four problem areas within the Chinese cultural context. Synthesizing qualitative feedback from IPT training and clinical supervision involving approximately 500 Chinese mental health professionals (2018-2025), the analysis aimed to highlight how traditional values-such as collectivism, filial piety (xiao), and face (mianzi, or social reputation and dignity)-profoundly shape interpersonal distress. The specific cultural nuances examined included how complicated grief is often masked by male stoic

Background: Hispanic/Latinx persons with alcohol and other drug disorders (AOD) have limited access to culturally competent continuity of care. To address this, the evidence-based smartphone recovery application Addiction-Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System (A-CHESS) was translated and adapted for Latinx Spanish-speakers with AOD, developing CASA-CHESS. Objectives: This study examined the AOD and mental health outcomes for Latinx Spanish-speaking clients using the CASA-CHESS smartphone tool over a 6-month period, post-residential treatment. This single group, pre-post study design

Research specific to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) among individuals of Hispanic and Latin American (H/L) ancestry is limited, as are culturally relevant assessment and treatment recommendations. This article discusses the implications of underrepresentation of H/L populations in OCD research and emphasizes the need to consider issues related to assessment, treatment, and structural barriers that hinder delivery of culturally appropriate first-line psychotherapy. Recommendations for assessment and treatment are provided to aid clinicians in distinguishing culturally normative thoughts an

INTRODUCTION Gout remains a health equity issue; Māori and Pacific peoples are disproportionately afflicted, with increased burden and loss of quality of life, yet are less likely to receive appropriate management, which mainly occurs in primary care. AIM This study aims to understand the perspectives of the mainly Māori and Pacific clinicians and staff at an urban marae practice about barriers and challenges to delivering effective care to a Māori and Pacific community with high burden of gout. METHODS Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 staff members delivering health care to a

Every cell has a genetic sex that is determined at the time of fertilization. However, the natal sex of cells may not match the hormonal environment in which they reside in transgender individuals. This discordance provides a unique opportunity to study the short- and long-term effects across a range of cellular functions, health conditions, physiologic processes and psychosocial outcomes to the benefit of transgender and cisgender communities. While there is a growing body of knowledge as the literature on sex differences in virtually every organ system accumulates, there remains a paucity of

The dignified disposal of limbs post-amputation is important to many cultural groups but is often not addressed. There is limited understanding from physicians and surgeons around the disposal process and its impact on patients, their beliefs, and their experiences within the health care system. In this overview, cultural and spiritual perspectives are reviewed and coupled with recommendations regarding the disposal and reclamation process. The current handling and management process of amputated parts is centered around hospital priorities. The beliefs and wishes of patients are not routinely

Due to their multiple minoritized identities, Latinx sexual- and gender-minority immigrants risk exposure to various forms of traumatic stressors at home and abroad that can result in post-traumatic stress disorder and other comorbid problems like depression. A much-needed review and synthesis of the latest research highlights important factors for practitioners and scholars to consider relevant to this vulnerable and under researched population. A data-driven conceptualization helps identify risk factors across different points in time such as violence and discrimination from communal and ins
