The aim of this study was to establish novel culture media for Leishmania parasites with a potential of obtaining high amounts of promastigotes with long-term viability, and consisting of ingredients that were available in microbiology or parasitology laboratories. Incorporation of neomycin to the culture medium was found to be effective in inhibiting Escherichia coli contaminants without interfering with the growth of serotype L. autumnalis. BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the value of the Toxoplasma gondii culture in blood and in other organic fluids in HIV positive and negative patients.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis (October 1990-May 1992) was carried out including all patients with positive cultures for T. gondii admitted to the Hospital Central of Asturias. The efficacy of chocolate agar, versus bacitracin, vancomycin, clindamycin, chocolate agar (BVCCA) for the isolation of non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) from nasopharyngeal swabs was determined. BVCCA cultured NTHi from 97.3% of NTHi-positive swabs, compared to 87.1% for chocolate agar. To maximise culture sensitivity, the use of both media is recommended.

To determine their ability to detect blood-borne pathogens, the blood culture media BCB Release (Becton Dickinson, USA) and Signal (Oxoid, UK) were evaluated on a total of 5,122 blood culture sets. A comparison of three different commercial media was made to assess their recovery of anaerobic organisms from the blood stream. The three media used were the 50-ml brain heart infusion broth with added CO2 (Pfizer), the 50-ml Thiol broth with added CO2 (Difco), and the 50-ml prereduced, supplemented peptone broth in a Vacutainer tube with added CO2 (Becton-Dickinson).
