Environmental information disclosure has become a key strategy for firms to respond to climate shocks. Using data from major typhoons in China (2008-2022), this study distinguishes between firms in disaster-affected regions and those in disaster-neighboring regions to examine how actual climate shocks and perceived climate risk influence voluntary environmental information disclosures (VEID). Results show that disaster-affected firms raise VEID in response to direct impacts, while firms in disaster-neighboring regions do so mainly due to heightened risk perception, with a larger overall increa

Anthropogenic aerosols can modify the environmental conditions underpinning tropical cyclone (TC) formation, yet their integrated and species-specific impacts remain poorly constrained. Using state-of-the-art WRF-Chem simulations with updated anthropogenic emission inventories, we quantify how major aerosol species influence the Tropical Cyclone Genesis Potential Index (GPI) over the Northwest Pacific. Total aerosol loading reduces regional GPI by approximately 24% relative to a clean-air baseline, primarily through decreases in potential intensity, midtropospheric humidity, and vorticity, acc

A central goal of evolutionary biology is to understand the molecular mechanisms that enable adaptive responses to novel environmental pressures. Extreme weather events like natural disasters can have catastrophic impacts on wildlife via habitat destruction, mortality,1,2,3,4,5,6 population displacement,6,7 and natural selection,1,2,5,8,9 even shaping broad biogeographic patterns of local adaptation on phylogenetic scales.10,11 However, few studies have investigated the functional changes in organismal performance or genomic targets associated with responses to such events.2,12,13,14 Here, we

Tropical cyclones (TCs) strain the public health system, particularly as coastal communities and infrastructure grow. Increases in sea level and ocean temperatures motivate research into how anthropogenic climate change is affecting TC behavior. We provide a comprehensive overview of TCs and available tools to study them, then introduce key TC-climate change relationships of greatest relevance for public health. We discuss observed trends and future projections in global TCs using observations, theoretical basis for observed trends, and results from a wide array of models. There is high confid

Many countries that are substantial contributors to global plastic pollution are also prone to tropical cyclones. Yet, the capacity for tropical cyclones to redistribute plastic waste has not been characterised. To address this, we simulate plastic transport from coasts in the Philippines archipelago during seven tropical cyclones, with a focus on the 2021 Super Typhoon Rai. To simulate plastic dispersal, a Lagrangian particle tracking model (OpenDrift) is forced with extreme typhoon wind conditions (parametric cyclone model) combined with ocean surface currents (comprising tidal currents, den

Plastic waste is a growing global concern, with extreme weather events such as typhoons potentially exacerbating its transport to marine environments. The Philippines, experiencing an average of 20 typhoons annually, provides a critical case study. Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary (OIWS), a Ramsar site in Cebu, Philippines, was impacted by Super Typhoon Rai in 2021. Field sampling across five mangrove transects and satellite imagery (DeMPS) for four different periods showed an increase in macroplastics after the typhoon. Mean plastic loads over four sampling periods were 0.43 ± 0.88, 0.69 ± 1.

Medication substantially contributes to global CO₂ emission of healthcare. IV bags and associated materials are an important source of pollution. During the IV bag crisis, caused by the closure of a factory in the US due to Hurricane Helena, emergency measures were implemented to reduce IV bag use. These measures addressed the acute problem and created an opportunity for more sustainable use of IV bags and medication. We discuss four measures to achieve sustainable reduction in usage of IV bags: (1) switching from intravenous to oral medication administration where possible, (2) optimizing int

Background: The Sundarbans, prone to cyclones and tidal surges, witnessed 13 cyclones (1961-2020), causing widespread water and vector-borne diseases, injuries, deaths, crop and livestock loss, and long-term health issues. Objectives: This study investigates the impact of multi-purpose cyclone shelters on the health outcomes of the Sundarbans population, focusing on epidemic-prone diseases caused by these natural disasters. Methods: The study used secondary data from the Health Management Information System (HMIS) portal, Census of India, International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardshi

The analysis of the influencing factors of flash floods, one of the most destructive natural disasters, is the basis of scientific disaster prevention and mitigation. There is little research considering the influence of tropical cyclones (TCs) and water conservancy projects on flash floods, which cannot be ignored in the island areas where flash floods often occur due to the complex influence of various factors. In this study, under the pressure-state-response framework (PSR framework), the factors affecting the distribution of flash floods on Hainan Island, China, from 1970 to 2010 were quan

Floods in coastal areas are caused by a range of complex factors such as typhoons and heavy rainfall, and this issue has become increasingly serious as interference has occurred in the social-ecological system in recent years. Given the structural limitations and high maintenance costs of the existing gray infrastructure, the need for a nature-based restoration plan utilizing green infrastructure has been raised. The purpose of this study is to simulate the restoration process through the quantification of green infrastructure effects along with resilience in disaster-prone coastal areas, and

Ore resources in the mining process form a large number of unmanageable tailings, mostly inhalable fine mineral particles, into the environment will cause serious pollution, and recycling is a precious resource. The cyclone classification provides the possibility for the recovery and exploitation of fine particles, but the recovery and utilization rate of conventional cyclone separation is seriously low, and the performance urgently should be optimized. In the present study, a new type of volute feed was proposed to strengthen the classification and recovery process of fine mineral particles.

Typhoons are extreme weather events that can not only affect marine dynamics, but also change marine biogeochemistry, considerably impacting the climate. Based on the satellite remote sensing data, the upwelling of abundant nutrients induced by typhoons from deeper eutrophic water to the upper oligotrophic layer triggers phytoplankton blooms in the upper oceans, thereby increasing new productivity (as a carbon sink). However, field observations have shown that organic matter decomposition (as a carbon source) is the dominant process regardless of whether phytoplankton blooms occur after typhoo

The Sundarbans, a natural shield on earth, is one and only place that has many noteworthy environmental and geographical values with breathtaking natural beauties. Near the Sundarbans area, proliferation of aquaculture in this delta contributes appreciably to the national economy. Although aquaculture has become a means of daily livelihood, this sector is nevertheless threatened by a complex of climate change impacts. Cyclones, rising temperatures, rising sea levels, coastal flooding, and erosion make coastal farming difficult. As a panacea, the Sundarbans can play a critical role in preservin

An intense tropical cyclone (TC), TC Hellen, occurred in the northern Mozambique Channel on March 27, 2014, and moved from the east coast of the African continent to the northern Madagascar island. TC Hellen dramatically altered the marine environment in the northern Mozambique Channel, resulting in a significant chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) bloom. A giant surface Chl-a northwest-ward movement from the northwest coast of Madagascar Island was first observed after the passage of TC Hellen in the northern Mozambique Channel. The dynamic mechanisms of these phenomenon were studied by satellite remote se

Increases in precipitation rates and volumes from tropical cyclones (TCs) caused by anthropogenic warming are predicted by climate modeling studies and have been identified in several high intensity storms occurring over the last half decade. However, it has been difficult to detect historical trends in TC precipitation at time scales long enough to overcome natural climate variability because of limitations in existing precipitation observations. We introduce an experimental global high-resolution climate data record of precipitation produced using infrared satellite imagery and corrected at

Factors driving community recovery trajectories after disaster are not well understood. We assess why some communities show stronger recoveries from disaster than others, examining the role of four policy toolkits that U.S. county governments frequently adopt to recover from disaster. Using mixed methods, we examine the cases of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita with a novel dataset of recovery policies adopted within each Louisiana parish following the disasters. We typologize recovery strategies and analyze policy adoption patterns after crises. To compare which policy toolkit leads to the best re
