This report addresses Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Cyclospora, and more briefly, Toxoplasma as the main parasitic protozoa of concern to food production worldwide. Other parasitic protozoa may be spread in food or water but are not considered as great a risk to food manufacture. The protozoan parasites Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and Cyclospora have proven potential to cause waterborne and foodborne disease. Toxoplasma gondii has been considered a risk in specific cases, but humans are not its primary host. Cryptosporidium and Giardia are widespread in the environment, particularly the aquatic envi

Forty nine stool specimens collected from severe diarrheic patients. Eight were suffering from Hodgkin's lymphoma, and the rest were suffering from acute lymph plastic leukaemia. All were examined microscopically for protozoan parasites mainly, Cryptosporidium parvum and Cyclospora cayetanensis. Of the patients, 34 (69.4%) were positive and 15 (30.6%) were negative by both microscopy and nested PCR. An additional 12 (24.5%) who were negative by microscopy were positive by nested PCR. Stool examination revealed 16 cases with C. parvum, and 6 with C. cayetanensis, and 3 cases showed mixed infect

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a coccidian parasite of humans of known and growing importance. However, we are surprisingly naïve as to our understanding of how to diagnose it and how it develops inside the human body. Here we provide details of the developmental stages of C. cayetanensis in the gallbladder of a 33-yr-old male with human immunodeficiency virus. The gallbladder was removed surgically in 2001 because of severe abdominal pain. For the present study, the archived paraffin block of gallbladder was processed for light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Histological s

From March to September 2001, 315 specimens from "nonrepeat" patients that were submitted for ova and parasite examination were stained using the Kinyoun modified acid-fast stain to detect the intestinal coccidians. Four patients (1.3%) were infected with coccidians, 2 with Cryptosporidium parvum and 2 with Cyclospora cayetanensis. No infections with Isospora belli were detected. In comparison, 15 patients (4.8%) had infections with one or more intestinal parasites detected by routine trichrome staining: 5 had Giardia lamblia; 2, Dientamoeba fragilis; 3, Strongyloides stercoralis; 1, Iodamoeba

Cyclospora papionis, Cryptosporidium hominis, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi were detected in 42 (17.9%), 6 (2.6%), and 29 (12.3%) of 235 newly captured baboons in Kenya, respectively. Most C. hominis subtypes and E. bieneusi genotypes found have been detected in humans in the area, suggesting that cross-species transmission of cryptosporidiosis and microsporidiosis is possible.

Cystoisospora belli and Cyclospora cayetanensis have been known to cause a range of gastrointestinal and systemic complications, particularly in HIV/AIDS patients with low immunity. The manifestations are more severe in patients with CD4 + T-cell counts below 200 cells/µl. The current study was performed to detect these parasitic infections in HIV-positive patients in northern Iran. This cross-sectional study analyzed 50 stool samples from HIV-positive patients attending behavioral disease counseling centers in Mazandaran province, northern Iran. Following informed consent, the samples were te

Emerging and reemerging infections are attracting greater attention from the public health and medical communities. Pathologists and other physicians are increasingly aware of the importance of the subspecialty of infectious disease pathology as a tool for diagnosis, surveillance, and research of emerging infections. In this communication, we describe the role that infectious disease pathologists have played during the last 2 years in broadening our understanding of selected emerging infections, including such examples as new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and bovine spongiform encephalopat

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium spp., Enterocytozoon spp., Giardia spp. and Cyclospora spp. are important intestinal protozoan parasites causing diarrhea in humans, livestocks and wildlife and have a significant impact on public health. No reports exist about simultaneous prevalence rates or genotyping data of these four parasites in outpatients from China.
METHODS: Fecal specimens from 252 diarrhea patients in a pediatric clinic (n = 169) and an intestinal clinic (n = 83) of a hospital in Shanghai, China, were collected between October 2012 and March 2013. All samples were examined for the prese

Cyclospora cayetanensis, a food and waterborne pathogen, is responsible for prolonged diarrheal illness. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, risk factors, and seasonal patterns of C. cayetanensis infection among diarrheal patients in eastern India. A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted. The overall prevalence of C. cayetanensis in the study region was determined to be 2.11%. The highest incidence (7%) was observed during the monsoon months, particularly in July and August. Children aged >5-12 years were the most susceptible group (17.8%, odds ratio [OR] = 47.45, P-va

We compared epidemiologic characteristics of Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora in surveillance data from outpatient departments in Guatemala. Routinely-submitted stool specimens were screened by microscopy. Age, sex, and symptom data were collected. Cyclospora was detected in 117 (2.1%) and Cryptosporidium in 67 (1.2%) of 5,520 specimens. The prevalence of Cyclospora peaked in the warmer months, while Cryptosporidium was most common in the rainy season. Both affected children more than adults, but Cryptosporidium affected children at a younger age than Cyclospora (median age 2 years versus 5 year

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a foodborne parasite that causes the human diarrheal disease cyclosporiasis. Multiple outbreaks of C. cayetanensis have been linked to Mexican-style dishes containing uncooked cilantro. The Bacteriological Analytical Manual (BAM) Chapter 19b method for the detection of C. cayetanensis has been validated in cilantro, but not in complex foods containing cilantro, such as fresh salsa/pico de gallo. In a previous study, specific modifications of the BAM method were performed in fresh salsa/pico de gallo for optimal detection of C. cayetanensis. In the present study, furt

INTRODUCTION: Microsporidia are intracellular micro-organisms, characterized by mature spores with chitin walls and by one extrusive polar tube through which they pour their sporoplasm to the host cells. In immunocompromised patients, Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Encephalitozoon intestinalis produce diarrhea and systemic dissemination. In Mexico there is not information about microsporidia in children with cancer.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the presence of microsporidia species in pediatric patients with leukemia or lymphoma.

The association of wealth and infections with Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, and microsporidia were examined in a longitudinal cohort conducted in Peru from 2001 to 2006. Data from 492 participants were daily clinical manifestations, weekly copro-parasitological diagnosis, and housing characteristics and assets owned (48 variables), and these data were used to construct a global wealth index using principal component analysis. Data were analyzed using continuous and categorical (wealth tertiles) models. Participant's mean age was 3.43 years (range = 0-12 years), with average follow-up o

A quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay with melt curve analysis (qPCR-MCA) was applied for the detection of protozoan oocysts in 501 human fecal samples collected in Dominican Republic. Samples were subjected to qPCR using universal coccidia primers targeting 18S rDNA to detect oocysts followed by MCA to identify oocyst species based on amplicon melting temperature. Putative positive samples were also tested by conventional PCR and microscopy. Cystoisospora belli (×3), Cryptosporidium parvum (×3), Cryptosporidium hominis (×5), Cryptosporidium meleagridis (×1), Cryptosporidium canis (×1

Intestinal opportunistic infections are often caused by unicellular parasites. Individuals with decreased immunity are particularly susceptible to infection by said microorganisms, and when they are infected, diarrhea can be the main clinical manifestation. However, intestinal parasites have rarely been taken into account in intestinal disorders. In our study, an investigation was conducted to determine the prevalence of intestinal micro-pathogens, such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Blastocystis, and microsporidia, in hospitalized patients with different immunological statuses. The study at han

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article presents a comprehensive narrative review of reactive arthritis (ReA) with focus on articles published between 2018 and 2020. We discuss the entire spectrum of microbial agents known to be the main causative agents of ReA, those reported to be rare infective agents, and those reported to be new candidates causing the disease. The discussion is set within the context of changing disease terminology, definition, and classification over time. Further, we include reports that present at least a hint of effective antimicrobial therapy for ReA as documented in case re

These updated guidelines from the Infectious Diseases Community of Practice of the American Society of Transplantation review the diagnosis, prevention, and management of intestinal parasites in the pre- and post-transplant period. Intestinal parasites are prevalent in the developing regions of the world. With increasing travel to and from endemic regions, changing immigration patterns, and the expansion of transplant medicine in developing countries, they are increasingly recognized as a source of morbidity and mortality in solid-organ transplant recipients. Parasitic infections may be acquir

Introduction Coccidian protozoa and microsporidian fungi are opportunistic pathogens increasingly implicated in infections in immunosuppressed individuals. These parasites typically infect the intestinal epithelium, resulting in secretory diarrhea and malabsorption. The disease burden and timeline are both greater and longer among immunosuppressed patients. Therapeutic options for immunocompromised individuals are limited. As a result, we wanted to better characterize the disease course and treatment efficacy of these parasitic gastrointestinal infections. Methods We performed a single-center,
