Potential of zebrafish as a model for exploring the role of the amygdala in emotional memory and motivational behavior.

Emotion is a key aspect of behavior, enabling humans and animals to assign either positive or negative values to sensory inputs and thereby to make appropriate decisions. Classical experiments in mammalian models, mainly in primates and rodents, have shown that the amygdala is essential for appetitive and aversive associative processing and that dysfunction of this brain region leads to various psychiatric conditions, including depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, phobias, autism, and posttraumatic stress disorder. In the past 2 decades, the zebrafish (Danio rerio; Cyprini

The Silverjaw Minnow, Ericymba buccata: An Extraordinary Lateral Line System and its Contribution to Prey Detection.

Fishes use their mechanosensory lateral line (LL) system to detect local water flows in different behavioral contexts, including the detection of prey. The LL system is comprised of neuromast receptor organs on the skin (superficial neuromasts) and within bony canals (canal neuromasts). Most fishes have one cranial LL canal phenotype, but the silverjaw minnow (Ericymba buccata) has two: narrow canals dorsal and caudal to the eye and widened canals ventral to the eye and along the mandible. The ventrally directed widened LL canals have been hypothesized to be an adaptation for detection of thei

Chromosome-level genome assembly of chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) from the Indo-Pacific Ocean.

Chub mackerels (Scomber japonicus) are a migratory marine fish widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. They are globally consumed for their high Omega-3 content, but their population is declining due to global warming. Here, we generated the first chromosome-level genome assembly of chub mackerel (fScoJap1) using the Vertebrate Genomes Project assembly pipeline with PacBio HiFi genomic sequencing and Arima Hi-C chromosome contact data. The final assembly is 828.68 Mb with 24 chromosomes, nearly all containing telomeric repeats at their ends. We annotated 31,656 genes and discovered that

Infection of endemic chub Squalius tenellus with the intestinal tapeworm Caryophyllaeus brachycollis (Cestoda): histopathology and ultrastructural surveys.

The endemic chub Squalius tenellus (Heckel, 1843) was introduced more than 100 years ago to Lake Blidinje (Bosnia-Herzegovina). Only 1 species of enteric helminth was found in a sample of 35 chubs, the tapeworm Caryophyllaeus brachycollis (Janiszewska, 1953). The paper includes histopathological investigation with identification of innate immune cells involved in host reaction and molecular data allowed correct designation of the cestode species. Of 35 specimens of chub examined, 21 (60%) harboured individuals of C. brachycollis and a total of 1619 tapeworms were counted, the intensity of infe

Extreme evolutionary shifts in developmental timing establish the miniature Danionella as a novel model in the neurosciences.

BACKGROUND: Species of Danionella rank among the smallest of all vertebrates and their miniature size is correlated with an extreme case of progenesis, resulting in tiny, transparent sexually mature individuals. Progenesis has affected the entire skeleton of Danionella, in which 60 skeletal elements are absent, including some of the skull roofing bones. This lack of a skull roof combined with the presence of a fully formed hearing and sound producing apparatus has led to Danionella being used as an important model for neurophysiological studies. RESULTS: Using both rank based and PGi analyses

Adverse health risk from prolonged consumption of formaldehyde-preserved carps in eastern region of Indian population.

Presence of formaldehyde as a preservative in commonly available fishes (Labeo rohita, Catla catla, Anabas testudineus and Clarias gariepinus) has become a serious health concern in the public health of eastern region of India. Formaldehyde content was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Results showed high formaldehyde content in frozen carp (19.66 and 23.3 mg/kg in Labeo rohita and Catla catla, respectively); however, the amount of formaldehyde was significantly reduced in boiled and fried fish (80 °C and 100 °C for 5 min) in mustard, coconut, and sesame oils. Experimental infection of Opisthorchis viverrini cercariae to the cyprinid fish, Barbonymus gonionotus.

Opisthorchis viverrini is an important public health problem, a major cause of cholangiocarcinoma in the Greater Mekong subregion including Lao PDR, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. Humans acquire the infection by consumption of raw, fermented or partially cooked freshwater cyprinid fish containing infective metacercariae. This study examined the effect of cercarial infection dosage (25-200 cercariae), age (1-60 day) and size (1-24mm) of Barbonymus gonionotus fish on infection success of O. viverrini cercariae. Additionally, the site of cyst formation of O. viverrini cercariae and subsequent de

Uptake of mercury by fish in an experimental boreal reservoir.

We studied the uptake of mercury (Hg) by finescale dace (Phoxinus neogaeus) in an experimental boreal reservoir for 2 years prior to flooding and 3 years after flooding, and in a natural wetland pond over the same 5-year period. Hg uptake was much higher after flooding as compared to uptake before flooding and in the natural pond. After flooding, Hg concentrations in late summer were usually 2-3x higher than concentrations observed prior to flooding. Net uptake of Hg by fish over the summer in the experimental reservoir was 0.25 and -0.07 microg per fish in the 2 years before flooding as compa

Histomorphological and histochemical researches on the digestive tract of the freshwater grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella (cypriniformes).

Ctenopharyngodon idella does not have a stomach, as is shown by the absence of gastric glands. The intestine is a simple coiled tube about twice the length of the body, having no valves and no ceca, and it is joined directly to the esophagus. The mucosa is fairly uniform in appearance, being thrown into folds which give it a mesh-like appearance. No multicellular glands can be detected in any part of the alimentary canal. Goblet cells are present: no differences are found in young specimens. Mucous in the goblet cells from young animals shows no differences in the various parts of the intestin

Characterizing toxicity pathways of fluoxetine to predict adverse outcomes in adult fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas).

Current ecotoxicity testing programs are impeded as they predominantly rely on slow and expensive animal tests measuring adverse outcomes. Therefore, new approach methodologies (NAMs) increasingly involve short-term mechanistic assays that employ molecular endpoints to predict adverse outcomes of regulatory relevance. This study aimed to elucidate the application of NAMs in adult fathead minnows using fluoxetine (FLX) as a model compound. Fish were exposed to three FLX concentrations (measured: 2.42, 10.7, and 56.7 μgL-1) and a control. After 96 h, molecular toxicity signatures were characteri

Normal stages of embryonic development of a brood parasite, the rosy bitterling Rhodeus ocellatus (Teleostei: Cypriniformes).

Bitterlings, a group of freshwater teleosts, provide a fascinating example among vertebrates of the evolution of brood parasitism. Their eggs are laid inside the gill chamber of their freshwater mussel hosts where they develop as brood parasites. Studies of the embryonic development of bitterlings are crucial in deciphering the evolution of their distinct early life-history. Here, we have studied 255 embryos and larvae of the rosy bitterling (Rhodeus ocellatus) using in vitro fertilization and X-ray microtomography (microCT). We describe 11 pre-hatching and 13 post-hatching developmental stage

Genome sequencing and assembly of Neolissochilus pnar, the largest cavefish species of Mahseer.

Neolissochilus pnar, identified as the world's largest cave fish, belongs to the family Cyprinidae and is endemic to one of India's biodiversity hotspots, specifically in the limestones caves of Meghalaya, India. This species is notably different from its closely related counterpart, Neolissochilus hexastichus, primarily in its lack of pigmentation and the absence or reduction of eyes. While juvenile N. pnar may have small or reduced eyes, adults exhibit a absence of external ocular features. Thus, genome sequence resources of this species would be an effective tool for bioprospecting and mini

Prevalence of fish-borne trematodes of the family Heterophyidae at Pasak Cholasid Reservoir, Thailand.

The prevalence of fish-borne trematodes was investigated in various species of freshwater fish at Pasak Cholasid Reservoir in Thailand. The samples were collected from fish markets around the reservoir between June 2011 and May 2012. A total of 789 fish samples were classified into 25 species. The metacercariae (i.e., the larval stage of trematodes) were examined from 4 parts of the fish body, and evaluated using the compression method. Ten species from two families of the fish collected were found to have trematodes of various infection rates. Among the Cyprinidae there were 9 species: Barbon

Histo-anatomical atlas of Garra rufa and its thermal tolerance at human body temperature.

Garra rufa, the doctor fish, is a small freshwater cyprinid notable for its exceptional tolerance to high temperatures, surviving at the human body temperature of 37 °C, and has emerging potential as a novel laboratory model for human cancer xenotransplantation and infectious disease research. To establish a foundation for its experimental use, we conducted comprehensive histo-anatomical analyses across major organ systems. The overall body organization and tissue architecture of G. rufa are broadly similar to those of zebrafish (Danio rerio), indicating a conserved cyprinid body plan. However

Comparative evaluation of environmental flow assessment: Contrasting habitat simulation and hydrological methods in the Beshar River, Iran.

In the past few decades, water infrastructures and exploitation programs have increased in arid and semi-arid areas of Iran. Therefore, environmental flow assessment with Nature-based solutions is an important issue to preserve and restore the river and lake ecosystems. This study compares conventional hydrological methods, and habitat simulation approaches with regard to the habitat suitability of native cyprinid fish species of the Beshar River located in the southwest of Iran. The results showed the highest agreement between physical habitat simulation (PHS) with Tennant method Optimum rang

Bioaccumulation and uptake kinetics of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in Pimephales promelas.

Due to the ubiquitous contamination of water resources by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), there has been growing interest in understanding the disposition of PFAS in the environment. However, bioaccumulation dynamics remain poorly understood for many substances within this group of chemicals, and kinetic-based information is limited, particularly for fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas), a common ecotoxicology model that is not commonly utilized during bioaccumulation studies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine uptake of 19 PFAS by adult fathead minnows over 7 days at

A congeneric and non-randomly associated pair of larval trematodes dominates the assemblage of co-infecting parasites in fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas).

Individual hosts are often co-infected with multiple parasite species. Evidence from theoretical and empirical studies supports the idea that co-occurring parasites can impact each other and their hosts via synergistic or antagonistic interactions. The fundamental aim of understanding the consequences of co-infection to hosts and parasites requires an understanding of patterns of species co-occurrence within samples of hosts. We censused parasite assemblages in 755 adult, male fathead minnows collected from 7 lakes/ponds in southern Alberta, Canada between 2018 and 2020. Fifteen species of end

Evolutionary mechanisms and practical significance of reproductive success and clonal diversity in unisexual vertebrate polyploids.

Unisexual reproduction is generally relevant to polyploidy, and unisexual vertebrates are often considered an evolutionary "dead end" due to the accumulation of deleterious mutations and absence of genetic diversity. However, some unisexual polyploids have developed strategies to avoid genomic decay, and thus provide ideal models to unveil unexplored evolutionary mechanisms, from the reproductive success to clonal diversity creation. This article reviews the evolutionary mechanisms for overcoming meiotic barrier and generating genetic diversity in unisexual vertebrates, and summarizes recent r

Effects of subchronic exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of a commercial fluridone formulation on fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas).

Invasive aquatic plants are a widespread problem in United States' waterways, and aquatic herbicide treatments are a common tool used in their management. Fluridone is an active ingredient in aquatic herbicides used globally to control aquatic plants. In order to be effective, fluridone requires a long contact time with plants resulting in extended exposure to non-target organisms. While there has been limited studies exploring the effects of fluridone on non-target aquatic organisms, the effects of subchronic commercial fluridone exposure at concentrations representative of operational use ra
