INTRODUCTION: A positive perinatal experience facilitates a smooth transition to motherhood and enhances the development of a strong bond between mother and newborn, contributing to maternal and societal wellbeing. Given the medicalization of childbirth in Cyprus, the examination of mothers' experiences of perinatal care becomes imperative.
AIM: To investigate mothers' experiences of care during the perinatal period and to identify factors related to the provision of maternal care that contribute to the interpretation of these experiences.
METHODS: The study draws on data from the European s

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is a neurotropic arbovirus that can also be transmitted through blood transfusion. Even though its geographic distribution has been expanding, there has not yet been any epidemiological data on WNV in northern Cyprus. The aim of our study is to fill this gap by using donated blood samples.
METHODS: Samples collected from the main government hospital blood bank in Nicosia were analyzed by anti-WNV enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) (immunoglobulin M [IgM] and immunoglobulin G [IgG]). Seropositive samples were subjected to plaque reduction neutralization

PURPOSE: Cryptosporidium is an intestinal zoonotic protozoan parasite that infects domesticated and wild animals. There are no reports on the prevalence and molecular characterisation of Cryptosporidium in the endemic Cyprus mouflon. The mouflon is strictly protected by national and international legislation. Its main distribution is Paphos State Forest and surrounding areas, where it may share the same water sources as free-ranging domestic goats. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. and genotypes in mouflon and free-ranging goats within the m

We studied the functional morphology of the postcranial skeleton of the endemic hippopotamus Phanourios minor, derived from the Upper Pleistocene site of Ayia Napa. The deposit, which consists of a hard limestone substrate on which the species moved, has yielded a great abundance of hippopotamus material, making the Ayia Napa locality one of the most important paleontological sites in Cyprus. The immigration of the large-sized mainland Hippopotamus to Cyprus led to the emergence of a new insular species with its main characteristic being the extremely reduced body size. In this study, all the

The state of the thermal environment can affect human health and well-being. Heat stress is associated with a wide range of health outcomes increasing morbidity and mortality and is recognized as an important health risk posed by climate change. This study aims at examining the effect of thermal conditions on the daily number of hospital admissions in Cyprus. Data from eight public hospitals located in five districts of Cyprus were analyzed from 2009 to 2018. Meteorological hourly gridded data were extracted by the ERA-5 Land reanalysis database with a spatial horizontal resolution of 0.1° × 0

West Nile virus infection can pose a diagnostic challenge to clinicians, especially in geographic areas where human cases of this disease have never been encountered before. In August 2016, the first human case of West Nile virus infection was diagnosed in Cyprus. An elderly non immunosuppressed patient with a history of recent travel, presented with a clinical picture of rapidly progressing ascending paralysis mimicking Guillain-Barré syndrome. Neuroinvasive West Nile virus disease was diagnosed by detecting West Nile virus nucleic acid in the patient's cerebrospinal fluid. Public health meas

BACKGROUND: Infections from microorganisms and parasites have been connected with either increased or decreased cancer risk. The objective of this study was to investigate whether infection by Echinococcus granulosus is associated with cancer risk.
METHODS: We assembled a pilot retrospective cohort of patients who were diagnosed as being infected by E. granulosus in Cyprus between 1930 and 2011. Age/gender-matched non-infected family members and neighbors were selected as references. Medical history was ascertained from each study subject through in-person interview. Cox proportional hazards

The most common T-serotypes among group A streptococci (n = 88) isolated from pharyngeal samples of children referred to a tertiary hospital in Cyprus for pharyngitis or scarlet fever during a 14-month period (2003-2004) were T28 (25%), T8/25/Imp19 (22.7%) and T12 (9.1%). All 88 isolates were sensitive to penicillin and clindamycin, but 1.1% and 18.2% of isolates were resistant to erythromycin and tetracycline, respectively. Macrolide consumption was estimated at 1.7 defined daily doses/1000 inhabitants/day. The low percentage of resistance to macrolides may have been related, at least in part

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare autosomal recessive neuromuscular disorder, affecting approximately one out of 10,000 live births. Muscular atrophy is caused by the gradual loss of alpha motor neurons within the ventral spinal cord or motor nuclei in the lower brainstem. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the carrier frequency of SMN1 gene mutation causing SMA in the Turkish Cypriot population.
METHODS: This is the first study to evaluate the SMN1 deletion mutations in this population. Exon 7 and 8 deletions of the SMN1 gene, and c.849C/T substitution within e

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a resilient gram-negative bacterium, poses a persistent threat as a leading cause of nosocomial infections, particularly in resource-constrained regions. Despite existing treatment and control measures, the bacterium continues to challenge healthcare systems, especially in developing nations. This paper introduces a fractional-order model to elucidate the dynamic behavior of nosocomial infections caused by P. aeruginosa and to compare the efficacy of carbapenems and aminoglycosides in treatment. The model's existence and uniqueness are established, and both global and l

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHD) is caused by mutations in the CYP21A2 gene. The study refers to CAH patients of Greek-Cypriot ancestry between years 2007 and 2018. One hundred and twenty patients with various degrees of CAH were categorized and genotyped. The patients were categorized in 4 mutation groups based on their clinical and biochemical findings. The majority of patients (85.0%) belonged to the non-classic (NC)-CAH form and the disorder was more often diagnosed in females (71.7%). The most severe classic salt-wasting (SW) form was identifi

An early 15th-century burial from a basilica at Polis Chrysochous provides the first archaeological evidence of leprosy in Cyprus, extending the temporal depth and illuminating the biological and social history of this disease on the island. The skeletal remains of a young adult female (age 20-34 years) display pathognomonic features of lepromatous leprosy including maxillary alveolar resorption with antemortem loss of all but one incisor, remodeling of the margin of the nasal sill and resorption of the anterior nasal spine, with diaphyseal remodeling of hand and foot phalanges and the distal

BACKGROUND: Sandfly fever is an incapacitating disease caused by sandfly-borne Phleboviruses that can lead to meningitis, encephalitis or meningoencephalitis. West Nile virus (WNV), a mosquito-borne Flavivirus, can induce neuroinvasive disease manifested by meningitis, encephalitis or acute flaccid paralysis. Both vectors are endemic in Cyprus and very active during summer. The aims of this study were to determine first the prevalence of sandfly fever viruses (SFV) and WNV infections in Cyprus and second, to investigate their role in central nervous system (CNS) infections.
