Hemorrhagic cystitis is 1 of the most troublesome complications of hematopoietic cell transplantation conditioning regimens. We conducted a nonrandomized controlled clinical study to investigate the role of continuous bladder irrigation in addition to mesna, hydration, and alkalization in the prevention of hemorrhagic cystitis after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. A total of 80 eligible patients entered the study. From May 2006, 40 patients who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation received continuous bladder irrigation in addition to the common protocol. A his

BKV was first postulated to be a potential pathogen in 1971 when it was isolated in the urine of a renal transplant recipient. The pathology of BKV is generally confined to the urinary tract. In renal transplant recipients, BKV has been associated with hemorrhagic cystitis, urethral stenosis, and interstitial nephritis. Reports of BKV infection in lung transplant recipients are limited to a few case reports in adult patients. A recent report revealed that up to 32% of adult lung transplant recipients may shed BKV in their urine without symptoms or renal dysfunction. To our knowledge, there are

We report a case of intractable hemorrhagic cystitis due to cyclophosphamide therapy for Wegener's granulomatosis. Conservative treatment, including bladder irrigation with physiological saline and instillation of prostaglandin F2 alpha, failed to totally control hemorrhage. We then used hyperbaric oxygen at an absolute pressure of 2 atm, 5 days a week for 8 consecutive weeks. The bleeding ceased completely by the end of treatment and the patient remained free of hematuria thereafter. No side effect was noted during the course of therapy. In future, this form of therapy can offer a safe altern

A case of acute hemorrhagic cystitis caused by adenovirus type 11, which occurred in an allograft recipient 6 months after a living-related renal transplantation, is described. The patient lacked a neutralizing antibody to adenovirus type 11 before transplantation. Adenovirus type 11 was isolated from his urine and he developed a neutralizing and complement-fixing antibody to this virus. Although adenovirus type 11 isolates had been obtained from 2 of 18 renal allograft recipients, only 1 patient suffered acute hemorrhagic cystitis. Adenovirus type 11 may play a role in acute hemorrhagic cysti

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is characterized by diffuse inflammation and bleeding of the lining of the urinary bladder. This study investigated hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in patients with viral or radiation-induced HC.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed involving 33 patients diagnosed with HC who received HBOT. Data analysis involved the Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman's correlation coefficients to determine the strength of correlations between variables.
RESULTS: Of the 33 patients, nine (27.3%) had radiation-induced HC, and 24 (72.7%) had viral HC. Among those

INTRODUCTION: Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is a devastating complication of bone marrow (BMT) and stem cell transplant (SCT). Much of the literature has focused on exclusively adult patient populations, with limited evidence regarding risk factors for mortality and morbidity among pediatric HC patients.
OBJECTIVE: To examine factors associated with all-cause mortality in children with HC after BMT/SCT.
METHODS: The Pediatric Health Information System database was queried for patients with ICD-9/10 codes for hematopoietic transplant and gross hematuria, hematuria unspecified, or cystitis with he

We report a case of adenovirus nephritis (ADVN) in a kidney transplant recipient (KTR) occurring within 8 days post-transplantation. The patient, a 35-year-old male, displayed systemic symptoms, high-grade fever, and acute kidney injury (AKI) without signs of hemorrhagic cystitis (HC). Extensive diagnostic workup revealed widespread necrotizing granulomatous inflammation in the allograft, leading to the identification of adenovirus (ADV) via histopathology and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. The source of ADV transmission remained uncertain, raising questions about the potential donor

Radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis is a late complication of radiotherapy, and in rare cases, refractory. Refractory bleeding may not be resolved by transurethral electrocoagulation (TUEC) or hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy and requires transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) or urinary diversion. Here, we report two cases of radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis successfully treated with TAE. Case 1 was a 61-yearold man who underwent total prostatectomy for prostate cancer followed by salvage radiation therapy. The patient developed radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis 2 years and 3

Cyclophosphamide (CYP) damages all mucosal defence lines and induces hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) leading to detrusor overactivity. Patients who undergo combined chemio-radiotherapy are at higher risk of HC. Potentilla chinensis extract (PCE) prevent oxidative stress-dependent diseases. Thus, the aim of the study was to investigate the effect of PCE on urinary bladder function in CYP-induced HC in preclinical study. 60 rats were divided into 4 groups, as follows: I-control, II-rats with CYP-induced HC, III-rats received PCE in dose of 500 mg/kg, and IV-rats with CYP-induced HC which received PCE

PURPOSE: Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) is the most common urotoxic side effect of cyclophosphamide (CYP). Platelet rich plasma (PRP) plays an important role in wound healing and inflammatory responses. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of intravesical PRP at treatment of interstitial cystitis (IC).
MATERIAL-METHODS: Female rats (n=24) were used. IC was induced by intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide (CYP). Rats were randomly allocated to one of four groups (n = 6 per group): a control group; a sham group with saline (75 mg/kg; i.p.) instead of CYP on day 1; a IC group

Hemorrhagic cystitis is defined by lower urinary tract symptoms that include dysuria, hematuria, and hemorrhage and is caused by viral or bacterial infection or chemotherapeutic agents. Reports of hemorrhagic cystitis caused by non-typhoidal salmonella (NTS) are extremely rare. We report a case of a 41-year-old man with hemorrhagic cystitis from NTS that caused massive bleeding and shock. The patient was hospitalized for uncontrolled diabetes and obstructive uropathy related to severe cystitis. A urine culture was positive for group D NTS. This case demonstrated that hemorrhagic cystitis in a

BACKGROUND: Postradiation hemorrhagic cystitis is a well known long-term complication of radiation therapy occurring in 3-6 % of patients. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis not responding to conventional management. This article reviews experiences with HBO for radiogenic cystitis after prostate cancer.
METHODS: All patients treated for hemorrhagic cystitis with HBO between 2006 and 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. The HBO procedure was performed for 130 min/day at 1.4 atmospheres overpressure. Patient demo

HC is a complication associated with HSCT, but occurs rarely in solid organ recipients. The reported incidence varies from <10% to more than 70%. HC is characterized by hemorrhagic inflammation in urinary tract mucosa with symptoms varying from asymptomatic microscopic hematuria to frank hematuria with clot formation and urinary tract obstruction. Early onset HC may be explained by toxicity of chemo- and/or radiotherapy, while multiple factors including viral infections and their interplay seem to be involved in late onset HC. So far, only incidence of cyclophosphamide-associated HC has been r

Hemorrhagic cystitis is a known complication of high-dose cyclophosphamide treatment, generally occurring at doses greater than 100 g. There are few reports of hemorrhagic cystitis occurring with low-dose cyclophosphamide therapy, and this complication has not been described in breast cancer patients. We present a case of a patient with stage IIB breast cancer who developed clinical, radiographic, and pathologic evidence of hemorrhagic cystitis after a single 600 mg/m(2) dose of cyclophosphamide. Three subsequent cycles of cyclophosphamide with the addition of IV hydration and MESNA were given
