Ultrastructural aspects of the parathyroid glands of acetazolamide-treated mice were examined. Many chief cells of the treated mice are deficient in free ribosomes compared with the control mice. Most Golgi complexes are poorly developed and associated with a few prosecretory granules. The present study shows gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) immunoreactivity in almost all chief cells of the mouse carotid body. GABA immunoreaction products were distributed diffusely in the cytoplasm as well as in the dense-cored granules. The ultrastructure of the parathyroid glands of hypophysectomized golden hamsters was studied. In the parathyroid glands of hypophysectomized animals the Golgi complexes and secretory granules were significantly decreased and large vacuolar bodies were significantly increased compared with those of the control animals. Electron-microscopic examination of an oat-cell carcinoma associated with the ectopic ACTH syndrome demonstrated characteristic cytoplasmic granules of 60-240 nm. diameter, consisting of a dense central core separated by a clear halo from an outer investing membrane. Comparison with previously examined non-secretory oat-cell carcinomas showed the granules to be more numerous in the present case. They are considered to represent secretory activity in the tumour.

Six neuron types are distinguished in the pars intercerebralis of the starved fifth instar of Rhodnius prolixus. 10 clinically healthy white leghorn males were utilised for this investigation. Apart from toluidine blue-pyronin-stained Araldite sections, uranyl acetate and lead monoxide staining revealed three types of epithelioid cells. Nuclear and cytoplasmic contents, especially three types of granules, conveniently designated as q, r and p granules, are described in detail and tabulated.
