First prognostic factors which are relevant for the variable course of bladder carcinoma like histological grading, blood group antigens and multiplicity of bladder tumors are discussed. Furthermore, therapy and recidive prophylaxis of not infiltrating carcinoma by intravesical cytostatic chemotherapy are discussed. In the last years, 11 patients with tumors of anterior mediastinum were treated at the Oncologic Centre in Lódź. Lymphocytic-epithelial thymoma was diagnosed in 6 patients whereas thymoma was suspected in 5 patients. Therapy was a problem mainly in these 5 patients, especially if lymphoma was considered in the differential diagnosis. The authors suggest that therapy should start with cytostatic agents in all patients with mediastinal tumors and morphology which not justifies thymoma diagnosis. Radiotherapy may follow in these cases in which 1-2 chemotherapy cycles failed.

Plasma exchange was performed in 2 patients with classical rheumatoid arthritis, complicated in one case by necrotic vasculitis, and in the other by mononeuritis multiplex. Systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) has a complex pathogenesis. Thus, management of systemic sclerosis remains a challenge. Currently, treatment in systemic sclerosis is targeted at reducing 1) abnormal immune activation, 2) microvascular abnormalities and 3) fibrosis. The fact that corticosteroids, phenothiazines and myotics induce cataract is well known. Moreover some informations about lens opacities have been reported less frequently after the use of cytostatics, deferoxamine, phenytoine, isotretinoine, oral contraceptives, allopurinol, synthetics antimalarial agents, diazepam, tetracyclines and sulfamides. Occasionally some others drugs have been suspected from experimental observations to produce cataract. Amongst all these drugs, corticosteroids are the most often incriminated.

The effect of the cytostatic agent cyclophosphamide on the growth of several transplant generations of a GRS/A mouse mammary tumor line was studied. Cyclophosphamide caused more growth inhibition in transplant generation 6 than in other transplant generations. Transplant generation 6 represented the time of transition in the tumor line from hormone responsiveness to hormone independence. These results suggest that mammary tumors are especially sensitive to chemotherapy at the stage when the first hormone-independent cells appear in the tumor.

Twenty patients with chronic myeloleucosis in the stage of blast crisis were examined. Results of immunological investigations indicate that these patients showed below normal indices of the absorptive and bactericidal function of polymorphous-nuclear neutrophils and cationic proteins. A 67-year-old woman suffered from an ovarian carcinoma with lymph nodes metastasis. During 3 years, she was treated with alkylating agents (Melphalan).
