Bioassay-Guided Isolation of Iridoid Glucosides from Stenaria nigricans, Their Biting Deterrence against Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae), and Repellency Assessment against Imported Fire Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

In our natural product screening program, we screened natural products for their repellency and toxicity against insect vectors. Methanolic extract of aerial parts of Stenaria nigricans (Lam.), with no published chemistry, was tested for repellency against mosquitoes and imported hybrid fire ants. Methanolic extracts showed biting deterrence similar to DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) against Aedes aegypti L. Based on this activity, the crude extract was fractionated into chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol subfractions. The active methanolic subfraction was further fractionated into 1

Fingerprinting groundwater pollution in catchments with contrasting contaminant sources using microorganic compounds.

Evaluating the occurrence of microorganics helps to understand sources and processes which may be controlling the transport and fate of emerging contaminants (ECs). A study was carried out at the contrasting instrumented environmental observatory sites at Oxford, on the peri-urban floodplain gravel aquifer of the River Thames and Boxford, in the rural valley of the River Lambourn on the chalk aquifer, in Southern England to explore the use of ECs to fingerprint contaminant sources and flow pathways in groundwater. At Oxford compounds were typical of a local waste tip plume (not only plasticise

Repellency of Selected Algerian-Origin Essential Oils and Hybrid Formulations Against Two Arbovirus Vectors, Culex pipiens s.l. and Aedes albopictus.

Mosquitoes are significant public health insects responsible for numerous vector-borne diseases. Injudicious chemical use has developed metabolic and genetic resistance in mosquitoes. This study evaluated the repellent efficacy of five essential oils (EOs) from local plants [Mentha spicata I, Ruta tuberculata, Mentha spicata II, Lavandula latifolia, and L. stoechas]. M. spicata I and R. tuberculata EOs were extracted using Clavenger hydrodistillation. Simultaneously, the remaining EOs were obtained through a local extraction distillation unit. Chemical composition was identified using GC-MS. R

Evaluating repellence properties of a catnip essential oil-based mosquito repellent using the human landing catch method in Eastern Uganda.

Mosquitoes (Diperta: Culidae) act as vectors for several diseases, including malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever. Mosquito repellents represent one of the primary measures used to reduce the risk of these diseases in humans by reducing mosquito landing and biting events. Nepetalactone, a natural insect repellent primarily found in the essential oil of catnip (Lamiaceae; Nepeta cataria), has established mosquito repellence properties, but has not been widely exploited as a mosquito repellent in malaria-endemic regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa. Here, we evaluated the potential of a locally

Cellular and molecular basis of IR3535 perception in Drosophila.

BACKGROUND: IR3535 is among the most widely used synthetic insect repellents, particularly for the mitigation of mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue and Zika, as well as to control flies, ticks, fleas, lice and mites. These insects are well-known vectors of deadly diseases that affect humans, livestock and crops. Moreover, global warming could increase the populations of these vectors. RESULTS: Here, we performed IR3535 dose-response analyses on Drosophila melanogaster, a well-known insect model organism, using electrophysiology and binary food choice assays. Our fin

From stormwater to surface water: An overlooked pesticide transport pathway in urban watersheds.

The concentration profiles of various pesticides in the context of urban stormwater drainage systems were investigated in this study. Results showed that the average concentrations of four common pesticides reaching surface water during wet weather was 1.3-1.7 times that in dry weather. The concentrations of N,N‑diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET), 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) and 2‑chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-1,3,5-triazine (atrazine) in samples from stormwater drainage were in the range of 188.39-7047.57 ng/L, 1.22-3.49 ng/L, 0.48-1

Evidence of low levels of trace organic contaminants in terminal lakes.

Endorheic lakes (or terminal lakes, TLs) have no natural outlet other than evaporation and slow infiltration. Some TLs receive reclaimed wastewater which contains poorly removed trace organic contaminants (TrOCs). To determine if TLs accumulate TrOCs we conducted a preliminary assessment of the occurrence of ten TrOCs in three TLs receiving reclaimed wastewater and one TL which does not directly receive reclaimed wastewater. Five of ten TrOCs (carbamazepine, DEET, fluoxetine, primidone, and trimethoprim) were present in all four TLs' surface waters (~0.3-1109 ng/L), six (caffeine, carbamazepin

Chain length influences the repellency of natural aliphatic lactones against Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Aedes aegypti (L.) is a widely distributed mosquito and the primary vector of arboviruses such as dengue. Its obligatory hematophagy, high environmental adaptability, and close association with humans make it a major public health challenge. Natural repellents with low environmental impact are currently being evaluated in experiments as potential complementary tools for managing Ae. aegypti. The development of environmentally compatible repellents has become a priority in vector control strategies. Lactones are cyclic esters naturally present in various foods and fragrances and have been assoc

The correlation between tick (Ixodes persulcatus Sch.) questing behaviour and synganglion neuronal responses to odours.

We examined the behavioural and electrophysiological responses of taiga ticks (Ixodes persulcatus) to several olfactory stimuli: Osmopherone® (5-a-androst-16-en-3-ol), Osmopherine® (butanoic and 3-methylbutanoic acids), DEET® (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide), ethanol (96%), and water (control stimulus). To study individual tick behavioural reactions to these stimuli, we used a Y-shaped glass maze (n=50). To study the electrophysiological reactions of the ticks' synganglia to these olfactory stimuli, we recorded the shifts of total potential (TP) of pre-oesophageal neurons in response to odour stim

Risk assessment of a mixture of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in thermal waters of Kütahya, Türkiye.

The increasing global consumption of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and their persistence in the environment have raised concerns about their potential ecological and human health risks, especially in aquatic systems. Thermal waters, widely used for therapeutic and agricultural purposes, remain underexplored regarding PPCP contamination. This study presents a comprehensive environmental risk assessment (ERA) of 104 PPCPs in thermal waters from 22 sampling points across nine geothermal fields in Kütahya, Türkiye. A total of five PPCPs (caffeine, DEET, ephedrine, carbamazepin

A rapid method for screening mosquito repellents on Anopheles pseudopunctipennis and Aedes aegypti.

One of the main vectors for malaria in Latin America is Anopheles pseudopunctipennis (Theobald), whereas Aedes aegypti (L.) is the primary vector of dengue, yellow fever, Zika and chikungunya viruses. The use of repellents is recommended as a personal protection method against these mosquitoes. However there are very few studies evaluating the effect of repellents on An. pseudopunctipennis. The use of a Petri dish to study repellence has been applied by several authors on flies, cockroaches, kissing bugs and mosquitoes, being a valuable technique for species that are difficult to breed under l

Creams formulated with Ocimum gratissimum L. and Lantana camara L. crude extracts and fractions as mosquito repellents against Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae).

Mosquitoes are the most deadly vectors of parasites that cause diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, and filariasis. In view of the recent increased interest in developing plant origin insecticides as an alternative to chemical insecticides, the objective of this study was to determine the repellent activity of creams formulated with methanol crude extract (MCE), hexane fraction (HF), and ethyl acetate fractions (EAFs) of Ocimum gratissimum and Lantana camara leaves in single and combined actions against female Aedes aegypti. Evaluation was carried out in the net cages (30 by 30 by 30 cm) co

Binding of a fluorescence reporter and a ligand to an odorant-binding protein of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

Odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), also named pheromone-binding proteins when the odorant is a pheromone, are essential for insect olfaction. They solubilize odorants that reach the port of entry of the olfactory system, the pore tubules in antennae and other olfactory appendages. Then, OBPs transport these hydrophobic compounds through an aqueous sensillar lymph to receptors embedded on dendritic membranes of olfactory receptor neurons. Structures of OBPs from mosquito species have shed new light on the mechanism of transport, although there is considerable debate on how they deliver odorant to

Repellents and acaricides as personal protection measures in the prevention of tick-borne diseases.

A number of preventive measures for the protection of humans against tick-borne diseases were evaluated. Measures involving the avoidance of tick bites with the use of protective clothing and insect repellents are the simplest and most effective. Repellents are applied directly to the skin or clothing and other fabrics, such as bednets, tents and anti-mosquito screens. Currently, DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) is considered the most efficient arthropod repellent reference substance. The registered and recommended active repellent ingredients for skin and/or cloths application, among others, ar
