Osteoid osteoma of the ethmoid bone associated with dacryocystitis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoid osteomas (OO) are small, benign osteoblastic lesions. Ethmoid bone OO has been very rarely reported so far. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 16-year-old boy suffering from persistent epiphora and a mild pain in the area of median canthus, due to a bone density mass within the right ethmoid air cells extending to the ipsilateral right orbit. The mass was removed via an external ethmoidectomy approach. Histopathologic examination of the specimen set the diagnosis of OO. One year after the operation the patient is free of symptoms, while no recurrence occurred. CONCL

Dacryocystitis associated with malignant lymphoma of the lacrimal sac.

BACKGROUND: Tumors of the lacrimal sac are unusual, and lymphomas of the lacrimal sac are quite rare. Four patients with a history of well-differentiated, small cell lymphoma or chronic lymphocytic leukemia presented with either acute or chronic dacryocystitis and epiphora due to lymphomatous infiltration of the lacrimal sac. METHODS: All four patients underwent dacryocystorhinostomy with lacrimal sac biopsy. All tissues underwent complete histopathologic evaluation including immunohistochemical studies for cell surface markers and, in addition, were compared with previous biopsies performed

Epstein-Barr virus-related dacryocystitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Acute dacryocystitis is an atypical and rare manifestation of pediatric mononucleosis still widely underdiagnosed in clinical practice. We report this rare condition and describe challenges in its diagnosis and treatment on the basis of a presented case. CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-year-old Caucasian girl without any ophthalmic history was admitted for right preseptal cellulitis requiring intravenous antibiotic therapy. During hospitalization, she developed a fluctuating lump in the nasolacrimal region which resembled an abscess, both clinically and radiologically. There

Endoscopic ultrasonic dacryocystorhinostomy for recurrent dacryocystitis following rhinoplasty.

UNLABELLED: The lacrimal sac is the structure most vulnerable to injury when performing rhinoplastic osteotomies. When performed in a low lateral position or along the frontal process of the frontal-maxillary suture, osteotomies can potentially tear the medial canthal tendon and injure the underlying lacrimal sac, possibly resulting in dacryocystitis. In this case report, the authors discuss a case of dacryocystitis following primary rhinoplasty; this injury was repaired with endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) using a Sonopet ultrasonic bone aspirator (Stryker, Kalamazoo, Michigan) at a si

Congenital lacrimal system anomalies mimicking recurrent acute dacryocystitis.

We describe 2 cases of congenital lacrimal system anomalies that mimicked recurrent acute dacryocystitis. Two patients with painful swelling below the medial canthal tendon who were referred for acute dacryocystitis were evaluated clinically with findings suggestive of lacrimal system anomalies. Both patients presented in adulthood and both had a history of recurrent presumed acute dacryocystitis without epiphora. Both patients had complete absence of the lower puncta on the involved side. Irrigation via the upper system showed lacrimal drainage system patency in both cases. Surgical explorati

Orbital abscess secondary to acute dacryocystitis: case report.

Acute dacryocystitis usually induces preseptal infection. In rare instances the infection that is confined to the lacrimal sac can extend to the orbital contents resulting in orbital cellulitis. We present a case of intraconal abscess secondary to acute dacryocystitis and review the literature of orbital cellulitis resulting from acute lacrimal sac infection.

Nasolacrimal metastasis from heptocellular carcinoma masquerading as dacryocystitis.

A 69-year-old man presented with a "lump" on his nose, after antibiotic therapy and warm compresses failed to resolve his presumed dacryocystitis. Because this disorder displayed atypical features (no tenderness, no redness, evidence of the greatest expansion of the nasolacrimal system inferior to the lacrimal sac fossa), a neoplastic process was considered. Orbital CT showed a mass obliterating the nasolacrimal system and maxillary sinus. Evaluation of the biopsy specimen revealed metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma of the orbit, making this case the first documentation of this disorder in th

Acute dacryocystitis resembling an infected subcutaneous cystic tumor.

Two cases of acute dacryocystitis are described. Both cases manifested as a painful cystic tumor which enlarged suddenly with swelling of the involved cheek. The condition was quite similar to an infected epidermal cyst. The location of the tumor and an episode of epiphora are the characteristic features of this disease.

Acute lacrimal sac biopsy-confirmed Epstein-Barr virus dacryocystitis.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection manifests with diverse clinical presentations. Primary EBV infection in children less than 6 years of age typically presents asymptomatically or with nonspecific upper respiratory symptoms. EBV-associated acute dacryocystitis is exceptionally rare. We report the case of a 6-year-old boy with EBV-induced nasolacrimal duct obstruction and secondary acute dacryocystitis successfully managed via endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy under general anesthesia.

Disguised Threat: Rhino-Orbital Mucormycosis Masquerading as Acute Dacryocystitis.

Mucormycosis is an aggressive, life-threatening fungal infection predominantly affecting immunocompromised individuals. It typically manifests as rhino-orbital or rhino-cerebral disease. However, rarely, its initial presentation may closely resemble an innocuous condition like acute dacryocystitis, which is prone to result in higher morbidity rates. Herein, we report a case of a 52-year-old diabetic patient who presented with symptoms suggestive of acute dacryocystitis. Broad-spectrum antibiotics were started, but the patient did not improve with therapy. Further investigations, including imag

Tear Fluid-Based Metabolomics Profiling in Chronic Dacryocystitis Patients.

Chronic dacryocystitis (CD) can result in severe complications and vision impairment due to ongoing microbial infections and persistent tearing. Tear fluid, which contains essential components vital for maintaining ocular surface health, has been investigated for its potential in the noninvasive identification of ocular biomarkers through metabolomics analysis. In this study, we employed UHPLC-MS/MS to analyze the tear metabolome of CD patients. UHPLC-MS/MS analysis of tear samples from CD patients revealed significant metabolic alterations. Compared with the control group, 298 metabolites wer

Alternaria fungal dacryocystitis with cutaneous fistula: a case report.

Alternaria is a fungal genus that can cause opportunistic human infection in immunocompromised hosts. While the majority of clinical manifestations are cutaneous or subcutaneous infections, there are reports of oculomycosis, which is most commonly present as keratomycosis or endophthalmitis. Here, we present a rare case of Alternaria dacryocystitis with cutaneous fistula in a diabetic patient. The patient was referred with a non-healing medial canthal wound and an initial biopsy report showing "ruptured hair follicle;" re-examination of the biopsy specimen with fungal stains led to the diagnosi

Giant ethmoido-orbital osteoma presenting with dacryocystitis and metamorphopsia.

Osteoma is the most common benign neoplasm of the paranasal sinuses. Intraorbital extension is rare. Here we report a 16-year-old adolescent boy who presented with epiphora and pain in the medial canthal area. A computed tomographic scan revealed a bone density mass in the left ethmoid cavity extending into the adjacent orbit. The tumor was removed via endoscopic endonasal surgery. The pathologic evaluation was consistent with osteoma. After surgery, all complaints have been resolved and there was not any sign of recurrence in the computed tomographic scan.
