Comprehensive mastocytosis data analysis from a single center.

Mastocytosis is a very rare disorder and is divided into three prognostically distinct variants by World Health Organization: Cutaneous mastocytosis (CM), systemic mastocytosis (SM), and mast cell sarcoma or localized mast cell (MC) tumors. The wide range of complaints may cause patients to consult various clinics, with resulting mis- or underdiagnosis. Therefore, cooperation between different subspecialties is of paramount importance. In this article, we have compiled 104 adult mastocytosis cases diagnosed and followed in our Hematology and other clinics. 86 (82.7%) of 104 patients had system

Exploring Tomato Fruit Viromes through Transcriptome Data Analysis.

This study delves into the complex landscape of viral infections in tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) using available transcriptome data. We conducted a virome analysis, revealing 219 viral contigs linked to four distinct viruses: tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV), southern tomato virus (STV), tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). Among these, ToCV predominated in contig count, followed by STV, TYLCV, and CMV. A notable finding was the prevalence of coinfections, emphasizing the concurrent presence of multiple viruses in tomato plants. Despite generally low viral le

Data analysis of potential field methods using geostatistics

ABSTRACT Processing of potential field data is commonly done by spectral methods because of their low computational complexity. However, we have studied some geostatistical methods to process the potential field data, and we find the advantages of using these spatial methods. First, we investigate transformation of data by kriging using a gravimetric model of covariance, we compare this approach with the spectral method, and we find its advantage when the data were sparse and not on a regular grid using a synthetic example as well as a field data example. Then, we use factorial kriging for noi

Semiparametric regression analysis for alternating recurrent event data.

Alternating recurrent event data arise frequently in clinical and epidemiologic studies, where 2 types of events such as hospital admission and discharge occur alternately over time. The 2 alternating states defined by these recurrent events could each carry important and distinct information about a patient's underlying health condition and/or the quality of care. In this paper, we propose a semiparametric method for evaluating covariate effects on the 2 alternating states jointly. The proposed methodology accounts for the dependence among the alternating states as well as the heterogeneity a

Cluster analysis of clinical data identifies fibromyalgia subgroups.

INTRODUCTION: Fibromyalgia (FM) is mainly characterized by widespread pain and multiple accompanying symptoms, which hinder FM assessment and management. In order to reduce FM heterogeneity we classified clinical data into simplified dimensions that were used to define FM subgroups. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 48 variables were evaluated in 1,446 Spanish FM cases fulfilling 1990 ACR FM criteria. A partitioning analysis was performed to find groups of variables similar to each other. Similarities between variables were identified and the variables were grouped into dimensions. This was performed in

Methods for high-throughput MethylCap-Seq data analysis.

BACKGROUND: Advances in whole genome profiling have revolutionized the cancer research field, but at the same time have raised new bioinformatics challenges. For next generation sequencing (NGS), these include data storage, computational costs, sequence processing and alignment, delineating appropriate statistical measures, and data visualization. Currently there is a lack of workflows for efficient analysis of large, MethylCap-seq datasets containing multiple sample groups. METHODS: The NGS application MethylCap-seq involves the in vitro capture of methylated DNA and subsequent analysis of e

[Alzheimer's disease. Statistical analysis of CT scanner data].

Brain CT's of 30 patients with early onset probable Alzheimer's disease (according to NINCDS-ADRDA work-group criteria), were compared to those of 30 sex- and age-matched control subjects. This study has confirmed that patients with Alzheimer's disease have higher cerebral atrophy than control subjects, and that cerebral atrophy is correlated with the severity of the disease appreciated with the mini-mental state and the global deterioration scales. It revealed that patients were more different from control subjects for the subjective index and for the third ventricle index. CT has a good pred

Mortality data analysis using a multiple-cause approach.

Death certificates are the primary source for information used to define general mortality patterns in the United States. Analyses of mortality data generally are restricted to one of the conditions listed on the certificate--the underlying cause of dealth. We review principles related to the use of mortality data and describe a study using mortality tapes ("multiple-cause tapes") that list all conditions recorded on dealth certificates. Using multiple-cause tapes, we found that the number of deaths associated with seven infectious diseases in 1968, 1969, and 1970 was from 24% (diphtheria) to

Symptomatic benefits of testosterone treatment in patient subgroups: a systematic review, individual participant data meta-analysis, and aggregate data meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Testosterone replacement therapy is known to improve sexual function in men younger than 40 years with pathological hypogonadism. However, the extent to which testosterone alleviates sexual dysfunction in older men and men with obesity is unclear, despite the fact that testosterone is being increasingly prescribed to these patient populations. We aimed to evaluate whether subgroups of men with low testosterone derive any symptomatic benefit from testosterone treatment. METHODS: We did a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate characteristics associated with symptomatic ben

Robust Covariance Matrix Estimation for High-Dimensional Compositional Data with Application to Sales Data Analysis.

Compositional data arises in a wide variety of research areas when some form of standardization and composition is necessary. Estimating covariance matrices is of fundamental importance for high-dimensional compositional data analysis. However, existing methods require the restrictive Gaussian or sub-Gaussian assumption, which may not hold in practice. We propose a robust composition adjusted thresholding covariance procedure based on Huber-type M-estimation to estimate the sparse covariance structure of high-dimensional compositional data. We introduce a cross-validation procedure to choose t

Design-analysis mismatch in the analysis of longitudinal HER2 data in breast cancer.

This graphical abstract presents findings from a simulation study examining the impact of within-patient correlation on statistical inference in analyses of repeated binary clinical outcomes. Under conditions of strong intracluster correlation (200 patients, 10 observations per patient, 1000 simulated data sets), naive logistic regression that assumed independence substantially underestimated standard errors and led to marked inflation of the type I error rate (30.5%). In contrast, generalized estimating equations (GEE), which appropriately account for within-patient clustering, preserved nomi

Regression analysis of multivariate current status data with dependent censoring: application to ankylosing spondylitis data.

Multivariate current-status failure time data consist of several possibly related event times of interest, in which the status of each event is determined at a single examination time. If the examination time is intrinsically related to the event times, the examination is referred to as dependent censoring and needs to be taken into account. Such data often occur in clinical studies and animal carcinogenicity experiments. To accommodate for possible dependent censoring, this paper proposes a joint frailty model for event times and dependent censoring time. We develop a likelihood approach usin

Neonatal infections: Case definition and guidelines for data collection, analysis, and presentation of immunisation safety data.

Maternal vaccination is an important area of research and requires appropriate and internationally comparable definitions and safety standards. The GAIA group, part of the Brighton Collaboration was created with the mandate of proposing standardised definitions applicable to maternal vaccine research. This study proposes international definitions for neonatal infections. The neonatal infections GAIA working group performed a literature review using Medline, EMBASE and the Cochrane collaboration and collected definitions in use in neonatal and public health networks. The common criteria derived

Sociodemographic Characteristics of Trans Persons in Belgium: A Secondary Data Analysis of Medical, State, and Social Data.

By performing secondary data analyses of existing medical, social, and state data, this study examined the sociodemographic profile of trans persons in Belgium and gains knowledge on those who are functionally invisible in traditional epidemiological studies or clinical samples. Based on medical interventions, post-operative transsexual persons were selected from a social survey data set, to compare their sociodemographic profile with available data on legal sex changes from the Belgian National Register and with published data on clinical samples of post-operative transsexual persons. Statistical means to enhance the comparability of data within a pooled analysis of individual data in neurobehavioral toxicology.

Meta-analyses of individual participant data (IPD) provide important contributions to toxicological risk assessments. However, comparability of individual data cannot be taken for granted when information from different studies has to be summarized. By means of statistical standardization approaches the comparability of data might be increased. An analysis of individual data on the neurobehavioral impact of manganese (Mn) exemplifies challenges and effects of a multilevel statistical procedure. Confounding from individual-level and study-level covariates was shown by analyses of variance, but

Obtaining and managing data sets for individual participant data meta-analysis: scoping review and practical guide.

BACKGROUND: Shifts in data sharing policy have increased researchers' access to individual participant data (IPD) from clinical studies. Simultaneously the number of IPD meta-analyses (IPDMAs) is increasing. However, rates of data retrieval have not improved. Our goal was to describe the challenges of retrieving IPD for an IPDMA and provide practical guidance on obtaining and managing datasets based on a review of the literature and practical examples and observations. METHODS: We systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library, until January 2019, to identify publications f
