Epidemiological and digital syndromic surveillance data on dengue, chikungunya, and SARI in Brazil.

Vector-borne diseases, such as dengue and chikungunya, along with air-borne diseases like influenza and COVID-19, are prone to epidemics, which increases the demand for real-time outbreak monitoring. Developing such systems requires harmonized datasets for calibration and validation. In this study, we created a dataset containing official disease notifications for dengue, chikungunya, and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) across Brazilian states for over a decade. The dataset integrates Google Trends search data for each disease and all associated symptoms, organized by the correspond

Balancing Multi-Target Semi-Supervised Medical Image Segmentation With Collaborative Generalist and Specialists.

Despite the promising performance achieved by current semi-supervised models in segmenting individual medical targets, many of these models suffer a notable decrease in performance when tasked with the simultaneous segmentation of multiple targets. A vital factor could be attributed to the imbalanced scales among different targets: during simultaneously segmenting multiple targets, large targets dominate the loss, leading to small targets being misclassified as larger ones. To this end, we propose a novel method, which consists of a Collaborative Generalist and several Specialists, termed CGS.

Parasitic egg recognition using convolution and attention network.

Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) caused by protozoan and helminth parasites are among the most common infections in humans in low-and-middle-income countries. IPIs affect not only the health status of a country, but also the economic sector. Over the last decade, pattern recognition and image processing techniques have been developed to automatically identify parasitic eggs in microscopic images. Existing identification techniques are still suffering from diagnosis errors and low sensitivity. Therefore, more accurate and faster solution is still required to recognize parasitic eggs and c

Screening of Key Part in IFN Pathway for Herpes Zoster: Evidence from Bioinformatics Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Herpes zoster is one of the most common diseases in middle and old ages, and the incidence rate is constantly increasing. Long-term, severe neuropathological pain continues to afflict the patients, causing trouble and even the inability to live a normal life. Since the occurrence and development of herpes zoster are related to many mechanisms, there is no uniform conclusion and specific treatment method, and only a limited number of people are currently vaccinated against HZ. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at exploring the potential mechanism or biomarkers for Herpes zoster. METHODS

Imputation of spatially-resolved transcriptomes by graph-regularized tensor completion.

High-throughput spatial-transcriptomics RNA sequencing (sptRNA-seq) based on in-situ capturing technologies has recently been developed to spatially resolve transcriptome-wide mRNA expressions mapped to the captured locations in a tissue sample. Due to the low RNA capture efficiency by in-situ capturing and the complication of tissue section preparation, sptRNA-seq data often only provides an incomplete profiling of the gene expressions over the spatial regions of the tissue. In this paper, we introduce a graph-regularized tensor completion model for imputing the missing mRNA expressions in sp

Treatment approaches and outcomes in plasmacytomas: analysis using a national dataset.

Solitary plasmacytomas are uncommon plasma cell disorders, which may present as a single bone lesion (P-bone) or extramedullary plasmacytoma (P-EM). There is a paucity of large studies analyzing prognostic factors and outcomes of plasmacytomas. While the treatment of choice is radiation therapy (RT), there is a lack of data evaluating optimal RT dose. In this study, we sought to answer these questions by utilizing the National Cancer Database plasmacytoma data from 2000 to 2011. A total of 5056 patients were included in the study (median age 62 years; range 52-72). To obtain a pure plasmacytom

Analysis of underlying causes of inter-expert disagreement in retinopathy of prematurity diagnosis. Application of machine learning principles.

OBJECTIVE: Inter-expert variability in image-based clinical diagnosis has been demonstrated in many diseases including retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), which is a disease affecting low birth weight infants and is a major cause of childhood blindness. In order to better understand the underlying causes of variability among experts, we propose a method to quantify the variability of expert decisions and analyze the relationship between expert diagnoses and features computed from the images. Identification of these features is relevant for development of computer-based decision support systems a

FID-YOLO: A pedestrian detection model integrating multispectral information in complex environments.

The advancement of pedestrian detection technology is of great importance for various applications such as intelligent driving, object tracking, and robot navigation. Many studies in this field have demonstrated that image quality significantly contributes to the precision of detection. However, unexpected factors such as adverse weather, occlusions, and scale variations, which extremely weaken the main features of the detected objects, leading to a decrease in detection accuracy. To address these problems, we propose a Feature-enriched Image Detection-YOLO (FID-YOLO), to improve pedestrian de

A new dataset of oral panoramic x-ray images and parallel network using transformers for medical image segmentation.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate segmentation of the key mandibular region in the oral panoramic X-ray image is crucial for the diagnosis of the mandibular region and the planning of implant surgery. Because the oral panoramic X-ray image contains many important anatomical information for implant treatment evaluation. However, the fuzzy boundary between each region in the image makes the segmentation task very challenging. In data-driven segmentation methods, corresponding datasets are often required. Due to the limited oral data set at present, there is a bottleneck in clinical application. MATERIALS

Specialized interferon action in COVID-19.

The impacts of interferon (IFN) signaling on COVID-19 pathology are multiple, with both protective and harmful effects being documented. We report here a multiomics investigation of systemic IFN signaling in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, defining the multiomics biosignatures associated with varying levels of 12 different type I, II, and III IFNs. The antiviral transcriptional response in circulating immune cells is strongly associated with a specific subset of IFNs, most prominently IFNA2 and IFNG. In contrast, proteomics signatures indicative of endothelial damage and platelet activation as

Solving the riddle: Unraveling the mechanisms of blocking the binding of leukotoxin by therapeutic antagonists in periodontal diseases.

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is a Gram-negative bacteria that has gained wide recognition for its causative role in the development of various immune diseases, which includes localized aggressive periodontitis. Its ability to evade host defense mechanisms is mediated by the secretion of leukotoxin (LtxA), which induces death of white blood cells (leukocytes) by specific binding to their surface-expressed leukocyte function-associated receptor (LFA-1) in its active state. Therapeutic compounds that interfere with this pathogenic process and abrogate A. actinomycetemcomitans virulence h

A novel and innovative cancer classification framework through a consecutive utilization of hybrid feature selection.

Cancer prediction in the early stage is a topic of major interest in medicine since it allows accurate and efficient actions for successful medical treatments of cancer. Mostly cancer datasets contain various gene expression levels as features with less samples, so firstly there is a need to eliminate similar features to permit faster convergence rate of classification algorithms. These features (genes) enable us to identify cancer disease, choose the best prescription to prevent cancer and discover deviations amid different techniques. To resolve this problem, we proposed a hybrid novel techn

Scoping review of secondary studies using the Federal Interagency of Traumatic Brain Injury Research datasets.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) affects hundreds of thousands of people in the United States each year and represents a significant public health problem. There is considerable heterogeneity of causes, diagnostic tools, treatments, and outcomes of TBI, and the volume of research on the topic reflects this. Despite the large body of research, significant gaps remain in our knowledge of how to diagnose and treat TBI. To address this, the Federal Interagency Traumatic Brain Injury Research (FITBIR) Informatics System was developed. METHODS: This scoping review aimed to provide a descrip

Recommendations of the SUFU/AUGS/ICS Female Stress Urinary Incontinence Surgical Publication Working Group: A common standard minimum data set for the literature.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Relevant, meaningful, and achievable data points are critical in objectively assessing quality, utility, and outcomes in female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) surgery. A minimum data set female SUI surgery studies was proposed by the first American Urological Association guidelines on the surgical management of female SUI in 1997, but recommendation adherence has been suboptimal. The Female Stress Urinary Incontinence Surgical Publication Working Group (WG) was created from members of several prominent organizations to formulate a recommended standard of study s
