A rapid and simple method was demonstrated for the analysis of atropine, anisodamine, and scopolamine by nonaqueous capillary electrophoresis (NACE) coupled with electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and electrochemistry (EC) dual detection. The mixture of acetonitrile (ACN) and 2-propanol containing 1M acetic acid (HAc), 20mM sodium acetate (NaAc), and 2.5mM tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (TBAP) was used as the electrophoretic buffer. Although a short capillary of 18cm was used, the decoupler was not needed and the separation efficiency was good. The linear ranges of atropine, anisodamine, and scopo

Two cases of acute voluptuary poisoning by infusions of dry leaves of stramonium are reported. Symptomatology was characterized by confusion and hallucination (visual hallucinations, loss of space-time relationships, etc.) associated with neurovegetal symptomatology ascribable to the active principles contained in the preparation used: mydriasis, disturbances in visual accomodation, dryness of the fauces. Tachycardia was observed in one case, bradycardia in the other. Symptoms were resolved in one case by administration of neuroleptics, and spontaneously in the other after about 12 hours. A br

INTRODUCTION: Jimson weed is a poisonous plant containing tropane alkaloids that can cause anticholinergic toxicity. Recognition of anticholinergic toxidrome is important for prevention and management of potentially life-threatening complications of severe toxicity, including dysrhythmia and seizure.
METHODS: Designed for pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) fellows, this simulation featured a 15-year-old female presenting to the emergency department (ED) with agitation and hallucinations. The team was required to perform a primary survey of the critically ill patient, recognize anticholinergic

Herbicides may raise, lower, or not affect the concentration of poisonous compounds in plants. Herbicides, 2,4,5-T and silvex controlled Wasatch milkvetch (Astragalus miser var oblongifolius) and markedly reduced the concentration of miserotoxin, a poisonous aliphatic nitro compound. The concentration of phototoxic furocoumarins in the leaves of spring parsley (Cymopterus watsonii) decreased to nontoxic concentrations 4 to 5 weeks after treatment with 2,4-D. The hydrocyanic acid content of wild cherry (Prunus spp) decreased after treatment with 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T, but increased in Sudangrass (S

Monthly changes of the content-ratio between S-(-)- and R-(+)-hyoscyamine as well as those between S-(-)- and R-(+)-scopolamine in the leaves of Datura metel L. cultivated in the field, were quantitatively analyzed by the use of HPLC with a chiral adsorbent. It was found that S-(-)-isomer was predominant for hyoscyamine and the ratio of R-(+)-isomer gradually increased during the growth, whereas in the case of scopolamine, S-(-)-isomer was the sole one found throughout the cultivation period. The 1H-NMR study in the CD3OD solution has suggested that S-(-)-hyoscyamine (1) and S-(-)-scopolamine

Virus isolate G35 was obtained from Euphorbia pulcherrima showing leaf curl and vein thickening symptoms in Tianyang, Guangxi Province, China. The virus was transmitted by whiteflies to Nicotiana tabacum, Lycopersicon esculentum, Datura stramonium and E. pulcherrima. DNA-A contains 2746 nucleotides, with two open reading frames (ORFs) in the virion-sense DNA and four ORFs in the complementary-sense DNA. When compared with the DNA-A sequence of other begomo-viruses, the total DNA-A of isolate G35 was most closely related to that of Ageratum enation virus (79.9% sequence identity). However, the

In this work, the thermal degradation of tropane and opium alkaloids was studied in samples of breadsticks prepared with corn flour, contaminated with seeds of Datura stramonium, and containing seeds of Papaver somniferum L. A total of seven different samples were prepared and eight alkaloids were studied, three tropane (atropine, scopolamine, and anisodamine) and five opium (morphine, codeine, thebaine, papaverine, and noscapine) alkaloids. For this purpose, a fast, easy and efficient method based on solid-liquid extraction (SLE) prior to the analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography

Brugmansia candida (syn. Datura candida) is a South American native plant that produces tropane alkaloids. Hyoscyamine, 6β-hydroxyhyoscyamine (anisodamine), and scopolamine are the most important ones due to their anticholinergic activity. These bioactive compounds have been historically and widely applied in medicine and their demand is continuous. Their chemical synthesis is costly and complex, and thereby, these alkaloids are industrially produced from natural producer plants. The production of these secondary metabolites by plant in vitro cultures such as hairy roots presents certain advan

A survey of the composition of 4,933 exhibits submitted for laboratory analysis by the Drug Squad of the Irish police during the years 1968-1978 indicated an increase in the level of non-medical drug consumption in the Republic of Ireland. Cannabis was the most widely encountered drug. Barbiturates constituted a considerable proportion. Amphetamines were rarely found; this was attributed to the unique legislation controlling the storage and sale of amphetamines. Various substances were sold as drugs of abuse. For example, Datura was sold as cannabis which caused a considerable concern because

• Although a major expectation of coevolutionary theory between plants and herbivores is the occurrence of reciprocal local adaptation, this has remained almost untested. Thus, we evaluated the presence and variation in the patterns of reciprocal local adaptation between an herbivorous insect and its host plant. • Two four-by-four cross-infestation experiments were performed under similar abiotic conditions. The first one was done under laboratory conditions to estimate herbivore individual performance while the second one was performed in a common garden to simultaneously estimate herbivore p

Tropane alkaloids such as atropine and scopolamine are naturally occurring compounds found in various plants of the Solanaceae family, notably Datura species. Although widely used in clinical settings, their potent anticholinergic properties can lead to severe toxic effects. Fatalities involving these substances remain rare, particularly in accidental contexts. Here, the authors report the case of a 58-year-old male who died following the accidental consumption of a meal suspected to have been contaminated with plant material containing tropane alkaloids. At autopsy, blackish vomitus containin

Phytoremediation is a cost-effective, eco-friendly technology for the removal of metals from polluted areas. In this study, six different plant species (Datura stramonium, Phragmites australis, Persicaria lapathifolia, Melilotus alba, Panicum coloratum, and Cyperus eragrostis) growing in a gold mine contaminated wetland were investigated as potential phytoremediators of mercury. The accumulation of total mercury and methylmercury in plant tissues was determined during the wet and dry seasons to establish the plants' variability in accumulation. The highest accumulation of total mercury was in
