Stereotyped behaviors in deaf and hard of hearing children.

Stereotyped behaviors frequently cause anxiety to parents and educators, and behaviors that appear stereotyped may prompt negative reactions. There has been little research on whether deaf or hard of hearing children display such behaviors. This study surveyed 390 students aged 3-24 years attending 3 residential schools for the deaf and hard of hearing in the United Kingdom. At least 1 additional disability was reported in 79% of the students. The main findings were that: deaf and hard of hearing children without additional disabilities did not show apparently stereotyped behaviors; approximat

The intersection of disabilities and the risk of sexual assault victimization among female college students.

Objective: To expand understanding of how disability status, disability type, and contextual factors shape past-year sexual assault victimization among female college students. Participants: ACHA-NCHA III (Fall 2020-Spring 2022) data from 94,284 female students at U.S. 4-year institutions. Methods: Separate logistic regressions modeled five past-year outcomes-any sexual assault, sexually touched, attempted assault, completed assault, and relationship assault-with predictors for disability status and specific types (ADD/ADHD, learning disability, blindness/low vision, deaf/hearing loss, autism

Prevalence and characteristics of hearing and vision loss in preschool children from low income South African communities: results of a screening program of 10,390 children.

BACKGROUND: The majority of children with sensory impairments live in low- and middle-income countries. More studies of hearing and vision impairment prevalence are needed, in order to generate more accurate estimates of trends in sensory impairments. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and describe the characteristics of hearing and vision loss among preschool children (4-7 years) in an underserved South African community following community-based mobile health (mHealth) supported hearing and vision services. METHODS: A screening program of sensory impairments was undertaken of child

Assistive technology for people with deafblindness in Southern Africa: a Delphi study exploring dimensions of impact.

PURPOSE: Assistive technology (AT) is a highly effective intervention to address the capability gap for people living with deafblindness. The My AT Outcomes Framework (MyATOF) is a novel Australian framework founded upon AT process principles and outcomes research. It guides stakeholders to articulate AT use according to 6 dimensions. MyATOF was developed as a data collection and knowledge translation tool. The use case of AT by people with deafblindness in Southern Africa was investigated in this study to determine the applicability of MyATOF dimensions to (a) people with deafblindness and (b

Human brain plasticity: evidence from sensory deprivation and altered language experience.

The results from the language studies taken as a whole point to different developmental time courses and developmental vulnerabilities of aspects of grammatical and semantic/lexical processing. They thus provide support for conceptions of language that distinguish these subprocesses within language. Similarly, following auditory deprivation, processes associated with the dorsal visual pathway were more altered than were functions associated with the ventral pathway, providing support for conceptions of visual system organization that distinguish functions along these lines. Could the effects o

[Clinical symptoms of generalized peroxisomal disorders].

INTRODUCTION: In generalized peroxisomal disorders, the clinical picture is not always obvious enough to orientate the diagnosis at an early stage of the disease. Although classic Zellweger syndrome can seldom be misdiagnosed, unless we ignore this kind of pathology altogether, the other phenotypes (neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy and infantile Refsum disease) are not always clearly delineated. Above all, the diagnosis may be difficult if we expect the patient to closely correspond to the cerebro-hepato-renal syndrome prototype. DEVELOPMENT: Thus, we must establish a series of crucial signs and

Abnormal cochlear enhancement in Norrie disease.

Norrie disease (ND) is a rare x-linked disease with retinal and cochlear vascular abnormalities. Clinically, it is characterized by congenital blindness and progressive sensorineural hearing loss during adolescence. We present images of a 3 year old child with ND and normal hearing demonstrating bilateral cochlear enhancement on brain MRI, a finding which has not been previously reported. ND mouse models show progressive degeneration of the endolymph-producing stria vascularis (SV); we hypothesize that these changes allow gadolinium leakage into the endolymph. Our images indicate that cochlear

Cogan syndrome: autoimmune-mediated audiovestibular symptoms and ocular inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Cogan syndrome is an uncommon disorder that presents with symptoms involving the eyes and ears. At its onset, it can mimic many common entities. Family physicians should be aware of Cogan syndrome because it can be successfully treated if it is recognized early in its course. It is one of the few treatable causes of deafness. METHODS: MEDLINE files were searched from 1982 to the present for "Cogan's syndrome." Additional references were obtained by cross-referencing bibliographies from available articles. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: As first defined in 1945, Cogan syndrome includes

Delayed diagnosis of a patient with Usher syndrome 1C in a Louisiana Acadian family highlights the necessity of timely genetic testing for the diagnosis and management of congenital hearing loss.

Advances in sequencing technologies and increased understanding of the contribution of genetics to congenital sensorineural hearing loss have led to vastly improved outcomes for patients and their families. Next-generation sequencing and diagnostic panels have become increasingly reliable and less expensive for clinical use. Despite these developments, the diagnosis of genetic sensorineural hearing loss still presents challenges for healthcare providers. Inherited sensorineural hearing loss has high levels of genetic heterogeneity and variable expressivity. Additionally, syndromic hearing loss

Retinal ganglion cell neurodegeneration in mitochondrial inherited disorders.

Since the early days of mitochondrial medicine, it has been clear that optic atrophy is a very common and sometimes the singular pathological feature in mitochondrial disorders. The first point mutation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) associated with the maternally inherited blinding disorder, Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), was recognized in 1988. In 2000, the other blinding disorder, dominant optic atrophy (DOA) Kjer type, was found associated with mutations in the nuclear gene OPA1 that encodes a mitochondrial protein. Besides these two non-syndromic optic neuropathies, optic atrop

A Rare Case of Wolfram Syndrome in a 27-Year-Old Male From Nepal.

Wolfram syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by diabetes mellitus, optic atrophy, and progressive neurodegeneration, often summarized by the acronym DIDMOAD (diabetes insipidus, diabetes mellitus, optic atrophy, and deafness). We report a 27-year-old male with a history of diabetes mellitus, progressive visual loss leading to blindness, and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. His family history was notable for diabetes-related mortalities and visual impairment in multiple members of the family. Clinical evaluation showed uncontrolled blood glucose level, optic atroph

Expression of two major isoforms of MYO7A in the retina: Considerations for gene therapy of Usher syndrome type 1B.

Usher syndrome type 1B (USH1B) is a deaf-blindness disorder, caused by mutations in the MYO7A gene, which encodes the heavy chain of an unconventional actin-based motor protein. Here, we examined the two retinal isoforms of MYO7A, IF1 and IF2. We compared 3D models of the two isoforms and noted that the 38-amino acid region that is present in IF1 but absent from IF2 affects the C lobe of the FERM1 domain and the opening of a cleft in this potentially important protein binding domain. Expression of each of the two isoforms of human MYO7A and pig and mouse Myo7a was detected in the RPE and neura

Partial CHARGE syndrome with bilateral retinochoroidal colobomas associated with 7q11.23 duplication syndrome: case report.

BACKGROUND: CHARGE syndrome is a relatively common cause of deafness and blindness resulting from failure to form the primordia of specific organs due to deficient contribution of neural crest cell derivatives. The majority of CHARGE syndrome cases are caused by heterozygous mutations in CHD7 on chromosome 8q21. Those with CHARGE syndrome without CHD7 mutation typically do not have an identified genetic defect. 7q11.23 duplication syndrome is associated with mild facial dysmorphism, heart defects, language delay, and autism spectrum disorder. In the current literature, 7q11.23 duplication has

New clinical and molecular evidence linking mutations in ARSG to Usher syndrome type IV.

In murine and canine animal models, mutations in the Arylsulfatase G gene (ARSG) cause a particular lysosomal storage disorder characterized by neurological phenotypes. Recently, two variants in the same gene were found to be associated with an atypical form of Usher syndrome in humans, leading to visual and auditory impairment without the involvement of the central nervous system. In this study, we identified three novel pathogenic variants in ARSG, which segregated recessively with the disease in two families from Portugal. The probands were affected with retinitis pigmentosa and sensorineur

[Current Topics on Precision Medicine for Neurofibromatosis Type 2].

Neurofibromatosis type 2(NF2)is a hereditary condition that causes bilateral vestibular schwannomas(VS), multiple schwannomas, and meningiomas. The prognosis is poor because the multiplicity of the tumors leads to a progressive decline in the quality of life, deafness, and death in an early age. NF2 is caused by a disorder in the tumor suppressor gene NF2, which encodes the merlin protein. Although it is an autosomal dominant disease, more than half of cases are presumed to be de novo caused by somatic mosaicism, the diagnosis rate of which has been improved by the recently introduced technolo
