Fungal Mycobiome of Mature Strawberry Fruits (Fragaria x ananassa Variety 'Monterey') Suggests a Potential Market Site Contamination with Harmful Yeasts.

An amplicon metagenomic approach based on the ITS2 region of fungal rDNA was used to investigate the diversity of fungi associated with mature strawberries collected from a volcanic orchard and open-air market stands. Based on the Kruskal-Wallis test, no statistically significant differences were observed in both non-phylogenetic and phylogenetic alpha diversity indices. According to beta diversity analyses, significant differences in fungal communities were found between groups (orchard vs. market). Taxonomic assignment of amplicon sequence variables (ASVs) revealed 7 phyla and 31 classes. Th

Synthesis, characterization and antimicrobial activity of Fe(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) complexes with 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl) pyridine ligand.

2,6-Bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine (L) ligand and complexes [M(L)Cl(2)] and [Fe(L)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (M=Zn, Cd, Hg) have been synthesized. The geometries of the [M(L)Cl(2)] complexes were derived from theoretical calculation in DGauss/DFT level (DZVP basis set) on CACHE. The central M(II) ion is penta-coordinated and surrounded by N(3)Cl(2) environment, adopting a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry. The ligand is tridentate, via three nitrogen atoms to metal centre and two chloride ions lie on each side of the distorted benzimidazole ring. In the [Fe(L)(2)](ClO(4))(2) complex, the central Fe

Post-harvest microbiome dynamics and their impact on the safety and quality of Lupinus mutabilis sweet (Chocho).

Chocho (Lupinus mutabilis Sweet), a traditional Andean legume, undergoes diverse post-harvest handling and processing steps that can influence its microbial composition and physicochemical properties. To understand how these factors shape food safety and consumer health, we characterized the chocho microbiome across the farm-to-table chain, including field-dried grains (Group C), open-market ready-to-eat products (Group A), and supermarket grains (Group K). Bacterial and fungal communities were profiled using 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, and moisture, pH, titratable acidity, and total

Sarcoptic mange changes bacterial and fungal microbiota of bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus).

BACKGROUND: Sarcoptes scabiei is globally distributed and one of the most impactful mammalian ectoparasites. Sarcoptic mange, caused by infection with S. scabiei, causes disruption of the epidermis and its bacterial microbiota, but its effects on host fungal microbiota and on the microbiota of marsupials in general have not been studied. Here, we (i) examine bacterial and fungal microbiota changes associated with mange in wild bare-nosed wombats (BNWs) and (ii) evaluate whether opportunistic pathogens are potentiated by S. scabiei infection in this species. METHODS: Using Amplicon Sequencing

Evaluation of potentially probiotic attributes of certain dairy yeast isolated from buffalo sweetened Karish cheese.

Egyptian traditional cheese has a long history and still represent an important part of the Egyptian diet. A lot of scientific studies in probiotic topic is usually related to bacteria, in particular lactic acid bacteria, and there is lack of information about potentially probiotic yeasts, except Saccharomyces boulardii. In the current study, 50 samples of traditional Egyptian buffalo sweetened cheese randomly were collected from five local Egyptian markets for yeast isolation. Isolated yeast species were identified using API20 kits techniques and the most frequently isolates were genotypicall

Pathogenicity of Zygosaccharomyces bailii and Other Yeast Species to Mexican Fruit Fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) and Mass Rearing Implications.

Yeasts from all immature life stages of Mexican fruit fly Anastrepha ludens (Loew) (Diptera: Tephritidae) from diet, insectary air, and rearing materials were isolated, identified and evaluated for pathogenicity. Fifteen species of yeasts with one to genus level were identified from 72 yeast cultures obtained. Zygosaccharomyces bailii was the only yeast found to be highly pathogenic to Mexican fruit fly. Seventy-two hours post inoculation, the diet in bioassay cups with Z. bailii consistently showed signs of fermentation with gas bubbling causing the migration of larvae to the walls and lids o

A simple mathematical model that describes the growth of the area and the number of total and viable cells in yeast colonies.

UnlabelledWe propose a model, based on the Gompertz equation, to describe the growth of yeasts colonies on agar medium. This model presents several advantages: (i) one equation describes the colony growth, which previously needed two separate ones (linear increase of radius and of the squared radius); (ii) a similar equation can be applied to total and viable cells, colony area or colony radius, because the number of total cells in mature colonies is proportional to their area; and (iii) its parameters estimate the cell yield, the cell concentration that triggers growth limitation and the effe

Lyophilization and Field Survival of Epiphytic Yeasts from the Phyllosphere of Native Cacao in the Peruvian Amazon.

Epiphytic yeasts are promising biocontrol agents of plant diseases but preserving and transferring them to the field is challenging. Here, we studied six cost-effective lyophilization protective agents to preserve seven strains of Amazonian yeast species isolated from the phyllosphere of native cacao (Theobroma cacao) in Peru. We evaluated the viability of yeasts at 30 and 90 days post-lyophilization in vitro, and their survival after controlled inoculation on cacao fruits in the field. The best protective agents were maltodextrin, honey + skim milk, and honey. Wickerhamomyces anomalus KLG-014

Seasonal Dynamics of Culturable Yeasts in Ornithogenically Influenced Soils in a Temperate Forest and Evaluation of Extracellular Enzyme Secretion in Tausonia pullulans at Different Temperatures.

The culturable yeast communities in temperate forest soils under the ornithogenic influence were studied in a seasonal dynamic. To investigate the intense ornithogenic influence, conventional and "live" feeders were used, which were attached to trees in the forest and constantly replenished throughout the year. It was found that the yeast abundance in the soil under strong ornithogenic influence reached the highest values in winter compared to the other seasons and amounted to 4.8 lg (cfu/g). This was almost an order of magnitude higher than the minimum value of yeast abundance in ornithogenic

Optimisation of the antifungal potency of the amidated peptide H-Orn-Orn-Trp-Trp-NH2 against food contaminants.

The design of novel efficient antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) faces several issues, such as cost of synthesis, proteolytic stability or cytotoxicity. The identification of key determinants involved in the activity of AMPs, such as cationicity and amphipathicity, allowed the synthesis of short peptides with optimized properties. An ultrashort peptide made of the sequence H-Orn-Orn-Trp-Trp-NH2 (O3TR) showed antifungal activity against several contaminants from food products. This peptide inhibited the growth of the filamentous fungi Fusarium culmorum, Penicillium expansum and Aspergillus niger wit
