Identifying intangible assets in interprofessional healthcare organizations: feasibility of an asset inventory.

Healthcare systems increasingly use business models that focus on tangible assets such as finances and facilities. Yet intangible assets, such as values, relationships and human capital, remain critical for understanding the worth of interprofessional healthcare education and collaboration. We implemented a novel interprofessional collaborative pilot exercise to explore the feasibility and usefulness of an Asset Inventory-using KJ methodology and an appreciative inquiry perspective-to identify and better understand intangible assets and their value in interprofessional healthcare education/tra

When teams can't decide. Are stalemates on your leadership team making you a dictator by default? Stop blaming your people--start fixing the process.

Leadership teams that can't reach consensus wait for the CEO to make the final call--and often are disappointed by the outcome. Frisch calls this phenomenon the dictator-by-default syndrome. Many companies turn to team-building and communication exercises to try to fix the situation. But that won't work, the author argues, because the trouble is not with the people, it's with the decision-making process. Attempting to arrive at a collective preference on the basis of individual opinions is inherently problematic. Once leadership teams realize that voting-system mathematics are the culprit, the

How and where the education dollar is spent.

Locally elected school boards have the authority and responsibility to decide how school budgets will be spent. In doing so, however, they must balance multiple funding restrictions and competing priorities. Despite great variance in local circumstances, most school districts have remarkably similar spending patterns, generally allocating from 60% to 63% of their budget to instruction and dividing the remainder among student services such as health services, counseling, and speech therapy; administration; building operation and maintenance; and food services and transportation. Polls show that

Disentangling the Relationship between Physician and Organizational Performance: A Signal Detection Approach.

Background. In previous research, we employed a signal detection approach to measure the performance of general practitioners (GPs) when deciding about urgent referral for suspected lung cancer. We also explored associations between provider and organizational performance. We found that GPs from practices with higher referral positive predictive value (PPV; chance of referrals identifying cancer) were more reluctant to refer than those from practices with lower PPV. Here, we test the generalizability of our findings to a different cancer. Methods. A total of 252 GPs responded to 48 vignettes d

Managing organizational ethics: How ethics becomes pervasive within organizations.

This study analyzes real experiences of culture management to better understand how ethics permeates organizations. In addition to reviewing the literature, we used an action-research methodology and conducted semistructured interviews in Spain and in the U.S. to approach the complexity and challenges of fostering a culture in which ethical considerations are a regular part of business discussions and decision making. The consistency of findings suggests patterns of organizational conditions, cultural elements, and opportunities that influence the management of organizational cultures centered

School transparency as a predictor of organizational trust.

Today, the gradual weakening of trust in institutions leads to serious social and administrative problems in a wide range of areas, from public administration to the private sector, from non-governmental organizations to digital platforms, and in this context, the concept of transparency stands out as one of the important elements affecting trust. Transparency is the state where the actions and practices of a person, institution, or system are clear, understandable, and traceable, while trust is the state where an individual willingly allows themselves to be vulnerable based on their belief th

The Influence of Hospital Policies on Clinicians' Decisions to Withhold or Withdraw Life-Sustaining Treatment.

BACKGROUND: There is considerable variation in clinicians' approaches to decisions to withhold or withdraw life-sustaining treatment (LST) across US hospitals. These differences are not explained by patient preferences alone and are likely influenced by other factors (eg, hospital policies, hospital culture, state laws, medical society guidelines). RESEARCH QUESTION: How do hospital policies influence clinician approaches to decisions to withhold or withdraw LST among patients admitted to an ICU? STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted semistructured interviews with ICU nurses and physicians

Using STD electronic medical record data to drive public health program decisions in New York City.

Electronic medical records can house patient information gathered over time and at multiple sites, thus they have the potential to increase continuity of care and improve service delivery in a multiclinic system. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene implemented an electronic medical record system in its 10 sexually transmitted disease clinics during 2004 and 2005. We examine the use of real-time electronic medical record data analyses to evaluate clinical services or program activities and present 3 examples of such analyses that have led to program improvements. Analyses

Institutionalizing integrated treatment for concurrent disorders: creating new organizational discourse.

BACKGROUND: The high overlap of mental health and substance use problems in the Canadian health care system and the subsequent demand for more effective services for clients with these high-risk issues have stimulated the debate on their integrated treatment. Although the idea of integration has been endorsed by decision makers at both programs and system levels, little attention has been paid to factors that have facilitated this process. PURPOSE: In this article, the processes by which organizational texts, language, metaphors, and symbols have facilitated institutionalization of integrated

An end to coercion: rights and decision-making in mental health care.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities requires a paradigm shift from a medical model of disability to a social model that emphasizes overcoming the barriers to equality created by attitudes, laws, government policies and the social, economic and political environment. The approach adopted by the social model recognizes that people with psychosocial disabilities have the same right to take decisions and make choices as other people, particularly regarding treatment, and have the right to equal recognition before the law. Consequently, direct or supported decis

Perceived fairness of algorithmic decision-making and university teachers' job burnout: a moderated chain-mediation model.

As big data and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies become embedded in the governance of higher education, algorithmic decision-making has improved managerial efficiency but has also led teachers to question the fairness of evaluation and to face difficulties in psychological adaptation, making job burnout an increasingly salient concern. How perceived fairness of algorithmic decision-making (FAD) relates to university teachers' job burnout, and through what psychological mechanism, remains unclear. Drawing on the transactional theory of stress and organizational support theory, we built

Development and Validation of the Chinese Employee Intertemporal Decision-Making Ability Scale.

Objective: Intertemporal decision-making ability refers to an individual's capacity to evaluate and integrate temporally distributed outcomes, regulate goal-directed behavior, and construct future representations in intertemporal choice contexts. This construct reflects a core psychological processing capacity rather than a mere preference for specific choice outcomes. It plays a critical role in employees' long-term performance management, career development, and self-regulation. However, existing research lacks standardized measurement instruments that directly assess intertemporal decision-

Does stress produce racialized patterns in clinical decisions? - A vignette study among physicians in Germany.

Healthcare systems increasingly operate under conditions of staff shortages, time pressure, and growing economic pressures. While a growing body of research documents racialized inequalities in healthcare, less is known about how these organizational conditions shape clinical decision-making and potentially contribute to unequal treatment. Situating stress within the broader political economy of healthcare economization, this study examines whether experimentally induced stress affects physicians' clinical judgements and whether these effects differ by racialization. A quasi-experimental facto

Perceived Shared Decision Making during Maintenance Hemodialysis: Associations with Health Literacy, Social Deprivation, and Care Setting.

KEY POINTS: Perceived shared decision making during routine hemodialysis care was low and heterogeneous across patients. Higher communicative and critical health literacy and lower deprivation were associated with higher perceived shared decision-making. Dialysis autonomy and unit type were associated with perceived shared decision making, suggesting organizational targets for patient-centered care. BACKGROUND: Shared decision-making (SDM) is a core component of patient-centered care. In CKD, SDM research has largely focused on dialysis modality choice, with limited attention to routine clini

Electronic Health Record Workflows in Acute Care Surgery: Ethnographic Study.

BACKGROUND: Systematic strategies to harness electronic health record (EHR) workflows, reduce redundancy, and support decision-making remain limited in acute care surgery (ACS). Understanding how EHR systems and workflows intersect with time-sensitive settings is critical to improving decision-making and outcomes in ACS. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate how ACS clinicians leverage the EHR for decision-making and to identify opportunities and challenges for EHR-enabled decision support. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative ethnographic study over a 6-month period, combining in-depth int

Conservation, conflict and the governance of fisher wellbeing: analysis of the establishment of the Gulf of Mannar National Park and Biosphere Reserve.

This article examines one MPA--the Gulf of Mannar National Park and Biosphere Reserve--located in southern India, and four types of social conflict that have surrounded its establishment. Taking the strength of wellbeing aspirations as point of departure, we focus on two themes: the implications of MPA embeddedness in wider societal systems, and the consequences of natural and social variety for governance. We conclude first of all that conflict resolution depends on MPA authorities' willingness to engage with the interferences that emerge from outside the MPA area. Secondly, we point out the

Associations Among Emotional Intelligence, Job Stress, and Clinical Decision-Making in Prehospital Emergency Staff: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Prehospital emergency personnel work in highly stressful and unpredictable environments where job stress may affect performance and clinical decision-making. Emotional intelligence has been proposed as a personal resource that may help individuals manage stress and improve decision-making; however, evidence in prehospital emergency settings remains limited and inconsistent. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the relationships between emotional intelligence, job stress, and clinical decision-making among prehospital emergency staff in Kurdistan, Iran. METHODS: This des

Operationalizing a shared decision making model for work rehabilitation programs: a consensus process.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to design and operationalize shared decision making (SDM) rehabilitation model for worker rehabilitation programs. SDM has previously been shown to improve decision outcomes in patient-health care professional relationships. To date, SDM has not yet been adapted to work rehabilitation, although it could be a valuable approach to better understand and agree on return-to-work decisions. METHODS: We designed a preliminary model for return-to-work decisions for workers suffering from pain due to musculoskeletal injuries. We submitted the preliminary model
