The increasing global demand for biopharmaceuticals calls for scalable and cost-efficient purification strategies. Downstream processing remains a major challenge, accounting for up to 80 % of total production costs and high solvent-related energy consumption. In this context, the present work investigates aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) based on deep eutectic solvents (DES), to reduce both purification costs and the environmental impact of purification methodologies. A series of DESs composed of tetraalkylammonium-based salts and choline chloride were prepared, characterized, and evaluated for

This study proposed ultrasound-assisted deep eutectic solvent (DES) for the extraction of capsaicinoids (CAP) from the placenta of lantern peppers. The DES of choline chloride-citric acid (ChCl-CA), with the highest CAP yield (8.25 mg/g) was screened. 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the ChCl-CA formed hydrogen bonds through -COOH of CA and N+Cl- of ChCl. Furthermore, the CAP preferred the diffusion of ChCl during the extraction of CAP, which indicated that ChCl played a better solvent role in the DES via molecular dynamics. High-performance

Objectives: The study explores the potential of various deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to serve as drug delivery systems and pharmaceutical excipients. The research focuses on two primary objectives: evaluating the ability of the selected DES systems to enhance the solubility of two poorly water-soluble model drugs (IBU and MFA), and evaluating their physicochemical properties, including density, viscosity, flow behavior, surface tension, thermal stability, and water dilution effects, to determine their suitability for pharmaceutical applications. Methods: A range of DES systems containing phar

The effect of the increase in the alkyl chain length of cation on the properties of deep eutectic solvents based on ethylene glycol has been investigated employing classical molecular dynamics simulations. The change in the structural and dynamic properties in both the bulk and liquid-vapor interface is explored through various analyses. The interaction between the anion and the ethylene glycol increases with an increase in the alkyl chain length of the cation, as observed in the increase of the lifetime of the hydrogen bond formed between the two. The terminal carbon atoms are found to be clo

4'-dihydrochalcones are secondary metabolites isolated from many medicinal plants and from the resin known as 'dragon's blood'. Due to their biological potential, our research objective was to determine the possibilities of using biocatalysis processes carried out in deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to obtain 4'-dihydrochalcones as a model compound. The processes were carried out in a culture of the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica KCh 71 and also in cultures of strains of the genera Rhodotorula and Debaryomyces. Based on the experiments carried out, an optimum process temperature of 35 °C was chosen, a

Herein, we investigated the anti-amoebic activity of phosphonium-chloride-based deep eutectic solvents against pathogenic Acanthamoeba castellanii of the T4 genotype. Deep eutectic solvents are ionic fluids composed of two or three substances, capable of self-association to form a eutectic mixture with a melting point lower than each substance. In this study, three distinct hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents were formulated, employing trihexyltetradecylphosphonium chloride as the hydrogen bond acceptor and aspirin, dodecanoic acid, and 4-tert-butylbenzoic acid as the hydrogen bond donors. Rising atmospheric concentrations of anthropogenic hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and carbon monoxide (CO) as a result of industrialization have encouraged researchers to explore innovative technologies for capturing these gases. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are an alternative media for mitigating H2S and CO emissions. Herein, we have employed ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the structures of the nearest-neighbor solvation shells surrounding H2S and CO when they are dissolved in reline and ethaline DESs. We aim to delineate the structural arrangement responsible for favorable

Triterpenic acids (TTAs), known for their promising biological properties, can be found in different biomass sources and related by-products, such as Eucalyptus globulus bark, and have been extracted using organic volatile solvents such as dichloromethane. Recently, deep eutectic solvents (DES) have been identified as promising alternatives for the extraction of value-added compounds from biomass. In the present work, several hydrophobic DES were tested for the extraction of TTAs from E. globulus bark. Initial solubility studies revealed that DES based on menthol and thymol as the most promisi

Fatty starch esters have attracted increasing interest as sustainable polymers due to their processing versatility and wide range of applications in biobased and biodegradable materials. However, conventional esterification methods often require highly polar organic solvents, operate under low starch concentrations, and require extended reaction times. We have developed a green approach to esterify wheat starch by reactive extrusion using a novel deep eutectic solvent (DES) based on a mixture of benzyltriethylammonium chloride (BTEAC) and imidazole (IM). This DES acted both as a starch solvent

Addressing the persistent challenge of hexavalent chromium (Cr(vi)) pollution, this study introduces a sustainable extraction strategy using a novel hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (HDES) composed of acetic acid and tetraoctylammonium bromide. Under optimized conditions (1 : 4 molar ratio), the HDES exhibited robust extraction capabilities, removing over 95% of Cr(vi) across a broad pH window (2-10). The extraction mechanism was best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while thermodynamic parameters confirmed a spontaneous and endothermic process (ΔH° = 38.21 kJ mol; ΔG° = -1

Eutectic biogels, combining deep eutectic solvents (DES) with biopolymer networks, are highly promising for advanced applications. However, the design of co-polymerizable DES (cPDES) remains largely unexplored for novel biogels. Herein, we constructed an innovative cPDES by strategically selecting 2-(acryloyloxy)ethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride as the polymerizable hydrogen bond acceptor and itaconic acid as the polymerizable hydrogen bond donor. By employing this cPDES as a functional solvent, gelatin as the matrix, and glycerol as a regulator, a multifunctional biogel (denoted as BioGel-PGG

Ternary deep eutectic solvents (T-DESs) show considerable potential for biomass refining. In this study, a novel T-DES pretreatment solvent, BE: Gly: UR (2:1:1), composed of betaine (BE), glycerol (Gly), and urea (UR), was developed for high solid loading. It was applied to pretreat burdock straw (BS) under mild conditions (70 °C for 20 min) at a solid-to-liquid ratio of 20%. The BE: Gly: UR system successfully removed 89.4% of lignin while retaining 95.8% of glucan. It also improved the yield of reducing sugars to 97.1% and increased enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency to 89.2%. After pretreatmen
