Deer as a potential wildlife reservoir for Parachlamydia species.

Wildlife populations represent an important reservoir for emerging pathogens and trans-boundary livestock diseases. However, detailed information relating to the occurrence of endemic pathogens such as those of the order Chlamydiales in such populations is lacking. During the hunting season of 2008, 863 samples (including blood, conjunctival swabs, internal organs and faeces) were collected in the Eastern Swiss Alps from 99 free-living red deer (Cervus elaphus) and 64 free-living roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and tested using ELISA, PCR and immunohistochemistry for members of the family Chlam

Serosurvey for selected pathogens in Iberian roe deer.

BACKGROUND: The roe deer is the most abundant and widespread wild Eurasian cervid. Its populations are expanding and increasingly in contact with livestock. This may affect the distribution of infectious diseases shared with other wild and domestic ungulates. METHODS: We investigated the antibody seroprevalence against Pestivirus, Herpesvirus, Bluetongue (BT) virus, M. avium paratuberculosis (MAP), and Brucella sp. in 519 roe deer from different regions in Spain, south-western Europe. RESULTS: No antibodies were detected against BT and Brucella sp. However, antibodies were detected against P

Artificial insemination in deer and non-domestic bovids.

Artificial insemination technology has revolutionized the domestic cattle breeding industry and allowed for the dissemination of valuable genetics worldwide. This technology has been adapted for use in many other taxa for the conservation of threatened and endangered species, but its use for the genetic management of small populations of deer, antelope and other non-domestic bovids has met numerous challenges and limited success. In practice, adaptation of domestic bovine AI protocols to other artiodactylids for genetic management has been limited by: (1) a lack of understanding of species-spe

Leptospirosis in farmed deer in New Zealand : a review.

Current knowledge of leptospirosis in farmed deer in New Zealand is reviewed. Over the past 25 years, leptospirosis has been reported to occur in individual cases as well as in herd outbreaks in farmed deer and in human cases linked to farmed deer. Serological studies and evidence from bacterial culture suggest infection is widespread. Mixing of young stock from several sources appears to be a significant risk factor for outbreaks. The culture of Leptospira interrogans serovars Hardjobovis, Pomona and Copenhageni has been reported. Infection with serovar Hardjobovis had the highest prevalence,

Programmed cell death in the regenerating deer antler.

Antlers are the only mammalian appendages capable of epimorphic regeneration and thus provide a unique model for investigating the mechanisms that underlie mammalian regeneration. Antlers elongate by a modified endochondral ossification process while intramembranous ossification takes place concurrently around the antler shaft. In this study, sites of apoptosis in the growing antler tip were identified by TUNEL staining and related to cell proliferation, as determined by PCNA staining. Bcl-2 and bax were identified by RT-PCR and bax was also immunolocalized in tissue sections. The apoptotic in

Nodular onchocercosis of red deer in central Spain.

The presence of nodular onchocercosis was investigated post-mortem in 142 red deer (11 calves, 35 yearlings and 96 adults) shot from February 1998 to January 1999, and July-November 1999 in "Quintos de Mora" (Toledo, central Spain), a game property belonging to the National Wildlife Reserves. Between 6 and 13 animals were analysed monthly by inspection for subcutaneous nodules of Onchocerca spp. Subcutaneous nodules of Onchocerca sp. were detected in 24% of the animals. Anatomical locations for nodules were the back and flanks. Infection ranged from 1 to 29 nodules per animal. Adult worms coll

Anthelmintic activity of albendazole in white-tailed deer.

Albendazole at dose rates of 11 to 54 mg/kg (mean of 25 +/- 11 SD) of body weight was highly effective (greater than 99%) against Haemonchus contortus, Ostertagia odocoilei, O mossi, Trichostrongylus askivali and Nematodirus odocoilei in 22 white tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in southern Texas. It was 38% effective against mature and immature deer liver flukes (Fascioloides magna). Toxicoses associated with treatment were not observed. Large numbers of abomasal nematodes (mean of 2,949 +/- 3.147 SD) were recovered from 16 untreated control deer, indicating these may have had a potential

[Light microscopy studies on the olfactory epithelium of the deer].

To examine the olfactory epithelium of the roe by the light microscope, the respective nasal region was prepared on the spot right on shooting, stained with a solution of Trypan-Blue, fixed in "Susa" thereafter, and was finally embedded in paraffin by the usual process. Macroscopically already a luxuriant development both of the endo- and ectoturbinalia was to be observed, filling the entire olfactory region of the nasal cavity with numerous folds, convolutions and ramifications. For the purpose of microscopic examination sections from 6 to 10 mum in thickness were made. The border between reg

Keypoint-Based Forest Musk Deer Behavioral Recognition Method.

The traditional monitoring of forest musk deer behavior primarily relies on direct human observation or the post hoc playback analysis of ordinary surveillance videos. This approach is not only time-consuming and labor-intensive but also highly subjective, easily leading to missing or misjudged critical behavioral information. Moreover, it is difficult to achieve real-time monitoring and anomaly warning. These limitations severely constrain the efficiency of the large-scale artificial breeding of forest musk deer and the effective advancement of wild population conservation. Thus, this study p

Rapid Analysis of DEER Signals Including Short Distances.

Double electron electron resonance (DEER) spectroscopy is an important technique to measure distance distributions P(r) for studying protein structures and protein-protein interactions. DEER data analysis can at times become challenging due to the lack of a detailed analytical signal expression or numerical methods with rapid computation time. We have derived an analytical expression κFULL, which includes both the pseudo-secular dipolar coupling (PSDC) and the finite pulse effects, especially important for shorter distances. Analyses of experiments by κFULL yield accurate and consistent P(r) v

Experimental trichinellosis in fallow-deer (Dama dama L.).

Herbivora can play a very important role in spreading trichinellosis, as showed by the massive epidemics in man, caused by the consumption of horse meat in the last years. In this context, the present study has been undertaken to verify, through an experimental infection, the susceptibility, together with other biological parameters, of fallow-deer to Trichinella infection. The four animals, 8-9 months of age and 18-25 Kg body weight, were orally infected with low doses of Trichinella britovi and T. pseudospiralis (2,000 larvae/animal). After day 30 p.i., the animals were necropsied and, using

Diversity of Babesia infecting deer ticks (Ixodes dammini).

To determine whether the presence of nonpathogenic piroplasms may confound field estimates of risk of Babesia microti infection, we identified sporozoites infecting the salivary glands of deer ticks (Ixodes dammini) by parallel microscopy and polymerase chain reaction assays. Piroplasms were evident in 14.4% of adult ticks from sites in the northcentral and northeastern United States. Of these, 83.3% contained DNA characteristic of Ba. odocoilei. This cervid piroplasm was detected in all of the sites examined and generally was more prevalent than was Ba. microti. Because deer ticks transmit bo

Melatonin receptors in red deer fetuses (Cervus elaphus).

Red deer (Cervus elaphus) exhibit highly seasonal rhythms in physiology and behaviour. The influence of photoperiod on the timing of these changes begins in utero where the fetus receives photoperiodic information via the diurnal pattern of maternal melatonin secretion. The potential sensitivity of deer fetuses to melatonin was ascertained by mapping specific receptors and characterizing them using 2-[125I]iodomelatonin and quantitative autoradiography in vitro. Specific binding occurred from day 31 of gestation onwards (term = 233 days) over the spinal nerves and respiratory system. At later

Physiological effects of hunting red deer (Cervus elaphus).

When red deer (Cervus elaphus) were hunted by humans with hounds the average distance travelled was at least 19 km. This study of 64 hunted red deer provides the first empirical evidence on their state at the time of death. Blood and muscle samples obtained from hunted deer after death were compared with samples from 50 non-hunted red deer that had been cleanly shot with rifles. The effects on deer of long hunts were (i) depletion of carbohydrate resources for powering muscles, (ii) disruption of muscle tissue, and (iii) elevated secretion of beta-endorphin. High concentrations of cortisol, ty

Phylodynamics of deer tick virus in North America.

The burden of ticks and the pathogens they carry is increasing worldwide. Powassan virus (POWV; Flaviviridae: Flavivirus), the only known North American tick-borne flavivirus, is of particular concern due to rising cases and the severe morbidity of POWV encephalitis. Here, we use a multifaceted approach to evaluate the emergence of the II POWV lineage, known as deer tick virus (DTV), in parts of North America where human cases occur. We detected DTV-positive ticks from eight of twenty locations in the Northeast USA with an average infection rate of 1.4 per cent. High-depth, whole-genome sequen

Fascioloides magna--epizootiology in a deer farm in Germany.

After initial observations of suspicious cases in 2009, the occurrence of Fascioloides (F.) magna in deer of a deer farm located in northeastern Bavaria, Germany, at the border to the Czech Republic was confirmed in autumn 2011. In March 2012, the deer were treated for fascioloidosis with triclabendazole. To monitor the epizootiology of fascioloidosis in the farm, 80-100 faecal samples were examined for Fascioloides eggs at monthly intervals from June 2012 to June 2013 inclusive. In addition, livers of 27 red deer and one sika deer collected during winter 2012/2013 were examined for gross lesi
