The quantification of muscle activities during arm elevation following reverse shoulder arthroplasty or superior capsular reconstruction for irreparable rotator cuff tears using positron emission tomography.

BACKGROUND: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) and superior capsular reconstruction (SCR) are recognized as surgical options for an irreparable rotator cuff tear. However, the postoperative changes of the muscle activity patterns remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the quantified muscle activities on shoulder elevation in patients treated with RSA or SCR using fluorine-18-labelled fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography. METHODS: Asymptomatic shoulders that underwent RSA or SCR and those without a rotator cuff tear were analyzed as the RSA, SCR, and control g

Deltoid contracture: a study of nineteen cases.

OBJECTIVE: Deltoid contracture is not uncommon in India. Contractures of deltoid often do not have definite etiology. We have critically analyzed the condition as regards the etiopathogenesis and its surgical results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients with deltoid contracture operated between June 1990 and September 2001 were enrolled for a unicentric retrospective study. The surgery was indicated in patients with abduction deformity of more than 30 degrees at the shoulder. The etiology of deltoid contracture was idiopathic (n = 13) intramuscular injection in deltoid muscle (n = 5) and

Pharmacokinetic profile after multiple deltoid or gluteal intramuscular injections of paliperidone palmitate in patients with schizophrenia.

Paliperidone palmitate (PP) is a once-monthly long-acting injectable antipsychotic approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in many countries. To evaluate the different injection-site options, we compared the pharmacokinetic profile of paliperidone after multiple injections of PP 100 mg eq. (156 mg of PP, equivalent to 100 mg of paliperidone) on days 1, 8, 36, and 64 into the deltoid (n = 24) or gluteal muscle (n = 25) in patients with schizophrenia. After four injections in the deltoid muscle, paliperidone exposure was higher for AUCτ and Cmax , compared with the gluteal muscle (geometric

The speed of completion of the decremental responses on repetitive nerve stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: It is generally believed that the decremental response in repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS) stabilizes at the fourth or fifth response. We have a preliminary impression that the decremental response approaches a plateau earlier in proximal muscles than in distal muscles. We investigated the speed of the completion of the decremental response in different muscles. METHODS: The "decrement completion ratio (DCR)" in the second or third response (DCR2 or DCR3) was defined as the ratio of the decremental percentage of the second or third response to that of the fourth response. Patient

Estrogen receptor alpha mRNA in human skeletal muscles.

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: To explain the effect of estrogen on skeletal muscle, the presence of estrogen receptor alpha mRNA (ERalpha mRNA) was investigated in human skeletal muscle. METHODS: The highly sensitive technique of nested reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (nested RT-PCR) was applied on a variety of tissue samples of both sexes: women (deltoid, pectoral, and uterus muscles) (N= 3) and men (deltoid muscle) (N= 3). The total ribonucleic acid was isolated from each tissue sample, reverse transcribed in a thermocycler, and nested PCR was then performed with specific primers. T

Massive irreparable rotator cuff tear and associated deltoid tear. Does the reverse shoulder arthroplasty and deltoid repair be a possible option of treatment?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Rupture of the anterior and middle deltoid muscle associated with rotator cuff tear arthropathy (RCA) could result in a definitive loss of shoulder function. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical outcomes after a concomitant reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) and deltoid repair under these circumstances. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2006 and 2012, 18 consecutive patients with a mean age of 69.7 years, affected by massive irreparable rotator cuff tear and associated dehiscence or rupture of anterior and middle deltoid muscle underwent this operation thro

Shoulder prostheses treating cuff tear arthropathy: a comparative biomechanical study.

UNLABELLED: Painful cuff tear arthropathy (CTA) affects the independence of the elderly. Surgical treatment often consists of joint replacement, the functional outcome of which remains variable. Knowledge of the biomechanical properties of the different prosthetic designs can guide the orthopaedic surgeon in the choice of implant to predict its clinical result. A 3-D computer model of the glenohumeral joint is used to analyse the moment of the deltoid muscle in the scapular plane. A geometrical 3-D ball-and-socket model of the shoulder joint was used to calculate (1) the angle-force relationsh

[Case of 12-year-old boy with idiopathic recurrent neuralgic amyotrophy].

Here we report a 12-year-old boy with idiopathic neuralgic amyotrophy who had two episodes of shoulder pain followed by shoulder muscle atrophy and weakness at the age of 7 and 11 years, respectively. These symptoms were self-limited and disappeared within 9 months. During the second episode, electromyograph (EMG) revealed neurogenic changes in the deltoid muscle. Muscle imaging showed the right deltoid muscle atrophy with slightly high intensity areas on T1 and T2 weighted images in MRI. Muscle biopsy from the right deltoid muscle revealed neurogenic changes with denervating and reinnervating

A wide and versatile combined surgical approach to the shoulder.

Complex injuries and conditions of the shoulder may necessitate wide exposure during the operative procedure. The commonly used approach today is a wide anterior deltopectoral approach with extensive detachment of the deltoid muscle, leading to muscle damage, which may result in difficult postoperative rehabilitation and deteriorated function. We describe a simple combined approach that consists of a deltopectoral approach in conjunction with a subcutaneously performed lateral deltoid split with a single skin incision. We believe this surgical technique provides another useful tool to achieve

Anatomy of axillary nerve and its clinical importance: a cadaveric study.

INTRODUCTION: Axillary nerve is one of the terminal branches of posterior cord of brachial plexus, which is most commonly injured during numerous orthopaedic surgeries, during shoulder dislocation & rotator cuff tear. All these possible iatrogenic injuries are because of lack of awareness of anatomical variations of the nerve. Therefore, it is very much necessary to explore its possible variations and guide the surgeons to enhance the better clinical outcome by reducing the risk and complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty five cadavers (20 Males & 05 Females) making 50 specimens includin

The role of chronic muscle (in)activity on carnosine homeostasis: a study with spinal cord-injured athletes.

To examine the role of chronic (in)activity on muscle carnosine (MCarn) and how chronic (in)activity affects MCarn responses to β-alanine supplementation in spinal cord-injured athletes, 16 male athletes with paraplegia were randomized (2:1 ratio) to receive β-alanine (n = 11) or placebo (PL, n = 5). They consumed 6.4 g/day of β-alanine or PL for 28 days. Muscle biopsies of the active deltoid and the inactive vastus lateralis (VL) were taken before and after supplementation. MCarn in the VL was also compared with the VL of a group of individuals without paraplegia (n = 15). MCarn was quantifie

Anterior deltoid deficiency in reverse total shoulder replacement: a biomechanical study with cadavers.

Reverse total shoulder replacement (RTSR) depends on adequate deltoid function for a successful outcome. However, the anterior deltoid and/or axillary nerve may be damaged due to prior procedures or injury. The purpose of this study was to determine the compensatory muscle forces required for scapular plane elevation following RTSR when the anterior deltoid is deficient. The soft tissues were removed from six cadaver shoulders, except for tendon attachments. After implantation of the RTSR, the shoulders were mounted on a custom-made shoulder simulator to determine the mean force in each muscle
