Linking demography and host dispersal to Trichuris arvicolae distribution in a cyclic vole species.

Spatial structure in the distribution of pathogen infection can influence both epidemiology and host-parasite coevolutionary processes. It may result from the spatial heterogeneity of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, or from the local population dynamics of hosts and parasites. In this study, we investigated the effects of landscape, host dispersal and demography (population abundance and phase of the fluctuation) on the distribution of a gastro-intestinal nematode Trichuris arvicolae in the fossorial water vole Arvicola terrestris sherman. This rodent exhibits outbreaks occurring regularly in

Effects of mercury on the life table demography of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus Pallas (Rotifera).

Mercury is highly toxic to a variety of aquatic organisms including zooplankton. The functioning of freshwater ecosystems can be altered if rotifers, being a natural food link between phytoplankton and fish larvae, are contaminated by mercuric compounds. In order to detect age-specific responses of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus to mercury toxicity (5 nominal concentrations as chloride viz. 0, 0.000625, 0.00125, 0.0025 and 0.005 mg l(-1)), we used the standard life table method at two different food (Chlorella vulgaris) levels (0.5 x 10(6) and 1.5 x 10(6) cells ml(-1)). Distribution of hepatitis B virus genotypes and demography in the general population of Karachi, Sindh.

Hepatitis B is a major global burden, with 253 million infected people. There are at least ten Hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes and 35 subgenotypes, with distinct ethno-geographical distributions and manifest differences in their biological characteristics, display close association with clinical outcomes, severity of disease, and response to antiviral therapy. The aim of the study was to identify the predominant circulating genotypes of HBV in the population of Karachi, Sindh. A demographic assessment was conducted alongside a serological evaluation of markers specifically HBsAg, HBsAb, HBeA

Demography and threats to population growth of Cirsium pitcheri, a threatened dune plant, in Wisconsin.

Multi-year and multi-site demographic data for rare plants allow researchers to observe threats and project population growth rates and thus long-term persistence of the species, generating knowledge, which allows for effective conservation planning. Demographic studies across more than a decade are extremely rare but allow for the effects of threats to be observed and assessed within the context of interannual environmental variation. We collected demographic data on the Threatened plant Cirsium pitcheri in two sites from 2011-2022. These sites were chosen because one exhibited the presence o

Demography of brain stem death and factors leading to successful consent for organ donation.

BACKGROUND: There is a widening gap between the patients requiring transplants in proportion to the availability of organs donated. After brain stem death (BSD), counselling for consent is mandatory and if successful, and viable organs are recovered. A low consent rate for donation results in failed donation in a number of potential donors. Many potential donors fail to make a donation due to various social and familial reasons resulting in a poor consent rate. The aim of this study was to identify the variables that lead to donation denials. METHODS: This retrospective study, carried out fro

Demography and disorders of English Cocker Spaniels under primary veterinary care in the UK.

BACKGROUND: The English Cocker Spaniel (ECS) is a common family dog in the UK. This study aimed to describe demography, morbidity, and mortality in ECS under primary veterinary care in the UK during 2016 using data from the VetCompass™ Programme. This study hypothesised that the prevalence of aggression is higher in male than female ECS, and higher in solid-coloured than bi-coloured ECS. RESULTS: English Cocker Spaniels comprised 10,313/336,865 (3.06%) of dogs under primary veterinary care during 2016. The median age was 4.57 years (inter-quartile range (IQR) 2.25-8.01) and the median adult b

Considerations on the Demography of BIA-ALCL in European Countries Based on an E(A)SAPS Survey.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence indicates that breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is associated with the use of certain breast implants. Regional variations have been reported, and a genetic susceptibility has also been suggested. However, large variations in the ability to correctly diagnose BIA-ALCL and to further report and register cases exist between countries and may in part explain variations in the demography. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A survey was conducted by The European Association of Societies of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery E(A)SAPS and sent to 4

Synergistic effects of seasonal rainfall, parasites and demography on fluctuations in springbok body condition.

1. Seasonality of rainfall can exert a strong influence on animal condition and on host-parasite interactions. The body condition of ruminants fluctuates seasonally in response to changes in energy requirements, foraging patterns and resource availability, and seasonal variation in parasite infections may further alter ruminant body condition. 2. This study disentangles the effects of rainfall and gastrointestinal parasite infections on springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) body condition and determines how these factors vary among demographic groups. 3. Using data from four years and three study

The rate of diagnosis and demography of pelvic inflammatory disease in general practice: England and Wales.

Knowledge of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) epidemiology is essential to the understanding of reproductive morbidity in women. This paper estimates the rate of PID diagnosis in general practice (GP) and the level of association between PID diagnosis and demographic factors. Diagnoses of PID were made at 1.7% of attendances amongst women aged 16 to 46. Increased risk of PID was associated with smoking (P<0.0001), younger age groups (P<0.0001) and lower socioeconomic groups (P<0.0001). Compared to patients who were married, increased risk was also associated with those patients who were widow

Ethnic determinants of perinatal statistics of Chinese: demography of China, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Despite limited health resources, the Chinese have achieved reasonably good perinatal and neonatal mortality rates comparable to those of many developed countries. China, Hong Kong and Singapore, areas with different socioeconomic structures, have shared the same favourable ethnic determinants of perinatal mortality. The Chinese have much lower incidence of very low birthweight babies (less than 1000 g) and lethal congenital anomalies. The former is probably related to the rarity of teenage pregnancy, maternal smoking and alcohol consumption. Asphyxia remains a major contributor to perinatal d

Hemophilia in Sweden. Studies on demography of hemophilia and surgery in hemophilia and von Willebrand's disease.

Demography: All known hemophiliacs in Sweden, 564 cases, were subjected to a demographic survey in 1980. The ratio of hemophilia A/B was 81/19. The severe cases constituted 30% and the mild 54%. Mean and median ages for mild and moderate hemophiliacs did not differ from those of Swedish males but were approximately 10 years lower in the severe cases. The prevalence was 7 per 100,000 population. The incidence remained constant at 1.7 (+/- 0.1) per 10,000 live-born males in the period 1957-1978. Mortality: In the period 1957-1980, there was a substantial increase in the median age at death among

Demography of paranoid psychosis (delusional disorder): a review and comparison with schizophrenia and affective illness.

This article reviews the demographic characteristics of paranoid psychosis or delusional disorder (DD) and compares them with those found for schizophrenia and affective illness. Delusional disorder constitutes between 1% and 4% of all psychiatric admissions, with an incidence of first admissions between 1 and 3/100,000 population per year. Like affective illness, but unlike schizophrenia, DD is predominantly an illness of middle to late adult life, usually occurring in persons who have been married. Like schizophrenia, but unlike affective illness, DD occurs more frequently in low socioeconom

Demography, sanitation and previous disease prevalence associate with COVID-19 deaths across Indian States.

The severity of COVID-19 has varied across regions, with a disproportionately higher case-fatality ratio in developed nations. In India, states with higher income have reported more COVID-19 related deaths compared to lower-income states. Understanding the underlying factors such as demographics, disease burden, urbanization, and sanitation can help in designing better public health policies to mitigate future pandemics. The objective of this study is to identify key predictors of COVID-19 mortality across Indian states by examining the role of disease prevalence, demographics, urbanization, a

Demography and Surgical Interventions of Submucous Cleft Palate: A Single-center Retrospective Case Series.

OBJECTIVES: Submucous cleft palate (SMCP) is a subtle and occult subtype of cleft palate. Diagnosis is often delayed due to inconspicuous clinical features of the SMCP. This study aims to investigate the demography of SMCP patients, to determine when SMCP patients are operated on, and to analyze the surgical technique applied to correct SMCP in our center. METHODS: Medical records in Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia (HPUSM) from 1999 to 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients diagnosed with SMCP who were operated on were identified. The variables extracted from the records includ

Demography of owned dogs across an East African continuum of high-low human density.

Understanding the demographics of domestic dogs is essential for effective disease control strategies, particularly in areas where dogs serve as reservoirs of diseases, such as rabies. In this study, conducted in a region proximate to Nairobi, Kenya, we aimed to address the lack of current data on dog demographics. This area spans a high-to-low human density continuum, providing a unique setting for examining the relationship between human and dog populations. We used a household (HH) survey approach, stratifying the area by human population density and selecting sub-locations for every 10th p

Human genetic structure in Northwest France provides new insights into West European historical demography.

The demographical history of France remains largely understudied despite its central role toward understanding modern population structure across Western Europe. Here, by exploring publicly available Europe-wide genotype datasets together with the genomes of 3234 present-day and six newly sequenced medieval individuals from Northern France, we found extensive fine-scale population structure across Brittany and the downstream Loire basin and increased population differentiation between the northern and southern sides of the river Loire, associated with higher proportions of steppe vs. Neolithic

Spatiotemporal epidemiology, environmental correlates, and demography of malaria in Tak Province, Thailand (2012-2015).

BACKGROUND: Tak Province, at the Thai-Myanmar border, is one of three high malaria incidence areas in Thailand. This study aimed to describe and identify possible factors driving the spatiotemporal trends of disease incidence from 2012 to 2015. METHODS: Climate variables and forest cover were correlated with malaria incidence using Pearson's r. Statistically significant clusters of high (hot spots) and low (cold spots) annual parasite incidence per 1000 population (API) were identified using Getis-Ord Gi* statistic. RESULTS: The total number of confirmed cases declined by 76% from 2012 to 20

Sensory-Skeletal Integration Underlies Diverse Bone Fusion Patterns in a Complex Demography of Cavefish.

Over the course of development, sensory systems must integrate specialized cells and tissues to generate a functional unit. A robust example of this type of integration is the lateral line, a mechanosensory system in fishes and amphibians that senses changes in water movement. Over the past century, numerous reports noted that the principal organs of the lateral line-neuromasts-co-localize to the position of ossification centers for bones of the facial skeleton. More recent work in the freshwater model system, Astyanax mexicanus, revealed facial bones of the suborbital complex frequently fuse

Detached Glycine max (Fabales: Fabaceae) leaves influence the demography of Aulacorthum solani (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

The foxglove aphid, Aulacorthum solani (Kaltenbach), is a major economic pest in Asian soybean fields. Previous studies on its life parameters often used detached soybean leaves, which may not accurately reflect development and reproduction due to disrupted nutrient flow. This study compared survival, development, and reproduction of A. solani on living versus detached leaves at 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, and 34 °C. Between 19 and 28 °C, aphids developed and reproduced successfully on both leaf types. At 31 °C, nymphs failed to mature on detached leaves but reached adulthood on living leaves, though
