Distribution of dendrites of descending neurons and its implications for the basic organization of the cockroach brain.

To determine precisely the brain areas from which descending neurons (DNs) originate, we examined the distribution of somata and dendrites of DNs in the cockroach brain by retrogradely filling their axons from the cervical connective. At least 235 pairs of somata of DNs were stained, and most of these were grouped into 22 clusters. Their dendrites were distributed in most brain areas, including lateral and medial protocerebra, which are major termination areas of output neurons of the mushroom body, but not in the optic and antennal lobes, the mushroom body, the central complex, or the postero

Cocaine self-administration alters the morphology of dendrites and dendritic spines in the nucleus accumbens and neocortex.

We studied the influence of cocaine use on the structure of neurons in brain regions that contribute to its rewarding effects by allowing rats to self-administer cocaine (0.33 mg/infusion) for 1 h a day for 1 month. Control animals were left undisturbed or allowed to work for food for the same period of time. After an additional 1 month drug-free period the brains were processed for Golgi-Cox staining. In rats that self-administered cocaine, but not rats that worked for food, there was a significant increase in dendritic branching and in the density of dendritic spines on medium spiny neurons

Differentiation of mitral cell dendrites in the developing main olfactory bulbs of normal and naris-occluded rats.

The morphological differentiation of mitral cell dendrites during embryonic and early postnatal development was examined in the main olfactory bulb of rats to determine a possible role of afferent activity in the development of the dendrites. Mitral cells and olfactory nerve fibers were labeled with 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3', 3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI) and fluorescein-conjugated lectin (Ulex europeus agglutinin-I), respectively. Morphogenesis of mitral cell dendrites proceeded as previously described (Malun and Brunjes [1996] J. Comp. Neurol. 368:1-16); that is, undifferent

[A case of neuro-Behçet's disease with numerous hypertrophied and proliferated dendrites in the inferior olivary nucleus].

A 32-year-old man suffering from iritis, erythema, and recurrent oral aphthae showed signs of involvement of the central nervous system for 8 years before his death. Behçet disease was diagnosed. He showed neurologic symptoms, such as facial nerve palsy, gait disturbance, and pathological reflexes, and psychiatric symptoms, such as euphoria, disinhibition, and irritability. Characteristic neuropathologic findings were hypertrophy of the bilateral olivary nuclei with marked hypertrophy and proliferation of dendrites, which have been extremely rare in the reported autopsy cases of neuro-Behçet d

On the neurons with dendrites intermingling with the fibers of the human corpus callosum: a Golgi picture.

Golgi preparations of the anterior part of the truncus of the corpus callosum from 11 adult human brains were investigated. The vertical plane of section was situated symmetrically between the frontal and sagittal plane. The use of this oblique plane of section enabled easy identification of the neurons with dendrites intermingling with transcallosal fibers, what was not possible in standard frontal sections. 2 types of such neurons (with features of other interstitial neurons) were described: fusiform and multipolar. Both types of neurons were more frequently impregnated in areas adjacent to

Spine distribution along the apical dendrites of the pyramidal neurons in Down's syndrome. A quantitative Golgi study.

The number of spines along the apical dendrites of the pyramidal neurons in the hippocampal and cingulate gyri were counted on Golgi preparations of the brains of seven cases of Down's syndrome; they did not show neuropathological senile changes. The number of spines in the middle and distal segments of the apical dendrites of Down's syndrome group were significantly fewer than in those of the control group. The number of spines in aged noncharacteristic mentally retarded cases were not decreaed compared with the controls. The diminution of spines in Down's syndrome is considered to be rather

Follicular dendritic cells.

Follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) are unique accessory immune cells that contribute to the regulation of humoral immunity. They are multitasker cells essential for the organization and maintenance of the lymphoid architecture, induction of germinal center reaction, production of B memory cells, and protection from autoimmune disorders. They perform their activities through both antigen-driven and chemical signaling to B cells. FDCs play a crucial role in the physiological regulation of the immune response. Dis-regulation of this immune response results when FDCs retain antigens for years. This

Tolerogenic dendritic cells.

Dendritic cells (DCs) have several functions in innate and adaptive immunity. In addition, there is increasing evidence that DCs in situ induce antigen-specific unresponsiveness or tolerance in central lymphoid organs and in the periphery. In the thymus DCs generate tolerance by deleting self-reactive T cells. In peripheral lymphoid organs DCs also induce tolerance to antigens captured by receptors that mediate efficient uptake of proteins and dying cells. Uptake by these receptors leads to the constitutive presentation of antigens on major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and II produ

Varicella dendritic keratitis.

A 7-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl suffered from unilateral disciform keratitis and iritis associated with varicella. While they were treated with topical corticosteroid, idoxuridine, and atropine drops, dendritic lesions typical of herpes zoster appeared four months after the onset of eruptive skin lesions. Using the direct immunofluorescent method, we showed varicella-zoster virus antigen in the epithelial cells scraped from the dendritic lesion.

Reduced Purkinje cell dendritic arborization and loss of dendritic spines in essential tremor.

Based on accumulating post-mortem evidence of abnormalities in Purkinje cell biology in essential tremor, we hypothesized that regressive changes in dendritic morphology would be apparent in the Purkinje cell population in essential tremor cases versus age-matched controls. Cerebellar cortical tissue from 27 cases with essential tremor and 27 age-matched control subjects was processed by the Golgi-Kopsch method. Purkinje cell dendritic anatomy was quantified using a Neurolucida microscopic system interfaced with a motorized stage. In all measures, essential tremor cases demonstrated significan

Amorphous Ni(OH)2 Coated Cu Dendrites with Superaerophobic Interface for Bipolar Hydrogen Production Assisted with Formaldehyde Oxidation.

Since formaldehyde oxidation reaction (FOR) can release H2, it is attractive to construct a bipolar hydrogen production system consisting of FOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Although copper-based catalysts have attracted much attention due to their low cost and high FOR activity, the performance enhancement mechanism lacks in-depth investigation. Here, an amorphous-crystalline catalyst of amorphous nickel hydroxide-coated copper dendrites on copper foam (Cu@Ni(OH)2/CF) is prepared. The modification of Ni(OH)2 resulted in hydrophilic and aerophobic states on the Cu@Ni(OH)2/CF surface,

Longitudinal in vivo evaluation of retinal ganglion cell complex layer and dendrites in mice with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), induced by the immunization of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG), is related to human MOG antibody-associated disease (MOGAD). Neuroinflammation and demyelination of the optic nerve can lead to retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death and axonal damage in MOGAD. Here, we aimed to evaluate the structural changes in RGCs longitudinally by in vivo imaging in mice with RGCs expressing yellow fluorescent protein along the course of EAE. Successful induction of EAE was confirmed by the neurological function scores and histology analyses. The changes

R-type voltage-gated Ca2+ channels mediate A-type K+ current regulation of synaptic input in hippocampal dendrites.

The subthreshold voltage-gated transient K+ current (IA) carried by pore-forming Kv4.2 subunits regulates the propagation of synaptic input, dendritic excitability, and synaptic plasticity in CA1 pyramidal neuron dendrites of the hippocampus. We report that the Ca2+ channel subunit Cav2.3 regulates IA in this cell type. We initially identified Cav2.3 as a Kv4.2-interacting protein in a proteomic screen and we confirmed Cav2.3-Kv4.2 complex association using multiple techniques. Functionally, Cav2.3 Ca2+-entry increases Kv4.2-mediated whole-cell current due to an increase in Kv4.2 surface expre

Synergistic action of dendritic mitochondria and creatine kinase maintains ATP homeostasis and actin dynamics in growing neuronal dendrites.

The distribution of mitochondria within mature, differentiated neurons is clearly adapted to their regional physiological needs and can be perturbed under various pathological conditions, but the function of mitochondria in developing neurons has been less well studied. We have studied mitochondrial distribution within developing mouse cerebellar Purkinje cells and have found that active delivery of mitochondria into their dendrites is a prerequisite for proper dendritic outgrowth. Even when mitochondria in the Purkinje cell bodies are functioning normally, interrupting the transport of mitoch
