Epstein-Barr virus-positive inflammatory follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (EBV+ IFDCS) is a rare tumor that typically arises in the liver or spleen and is characterized by spindle-shaped cells within a dense lymphoplasmacytic background. We report a case of a 64-year-old woman with an incidental splenic mass found during routine imaging. MRI showed a 4.8 cm lesion with progressive enhancement. The patient underwent laparoscopic partial splenectomy. Histopathological examination revealed features consistent with EBV+ IFDCS, including positivity for CD21, CD23, CD35, SMA, EMA, and EBER. EBV+ IF

Castleman disease (CD) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder that may be complicated by paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) and follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS), although their concurrence is uncommon. The present study reported on a 67-year-old woman with progressive oral ulceration and generalized purple skin spots. Imaging demonstrated a 114mm ×96mm ×118 mm lesion in the left pelvis. Serology was positive for anti-desmoplakin-1 and -3 and anti-BP230 antibodies. Histopathology revealed hyaline-vascular unicentric CD with focal low-to-intermediate-grade FDCS; immunohistochemistry showed C

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the gastrointestinal tract is a rare malignancy. We describe contrast-enhanced CT and FDG PET/CT findings in a case of jejunal follicular dendritic cell sarcoma with hepatic metastasis. The primary jejunal tumor showed inhomogeneous enhancement on contrast-enhanced CT and intense FDG uptake on PET/CT mimicking adenocarcinoma or gastrointestinal stromal tumor. The hepatic metastatic tumor showed hypovascularity on contrast-enhanced CT and mild FDG uptake on PET/CT. This case indicates that follicular dendritic cell sarcoma should be included in the different

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a rare neoplasm of low to intermediate malignant potential. It can occur in any location where follicular dendritic cells reside, and nearly all the cases reported in clinical notes have occurred as primary lymph node tumors. Carcinosarcoma or true malignant mixed tumor of the salivary gland is a tumor composed of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements. It is an exceedingly rare tumor of the salivary glands, and only approximately 60 clinical notes have been reported. In this report, we describe a recurrent carcinosarcoma of the parotid gland that cont

BACKGROUND: Since the first description of extranodalfollicular dendritic cell sarcoma in 1994, there has been a gradual increase in understanding of the morphologic features and clinical presentation of this tumor. However, difficulties persist in making cytologic diagnosis.
CASES: Two cases of follicular dendritic cell sarcoma with fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) findings were reported. The first patient was a Chinese woman who presented with a right tonsillar mass, which was followed by right submandibular recurrence. The second patient was a Chinese man with known history of Castle

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the parotid gland is an extremely rare tumor, with only six cases reported in the literature. A 51-year-old female had a 3.0 cm tumor resected from the right parotid gland. The tumor exhibited solid sheets, whorls, fascicular pattern, and syncytium appearance with an indistinct cell border. The lymphocytic infiltrate was sprinkled throughout the neoplasm, with focal prominent perivascular cuffing. Immunohistochemically, it was positive for follicular dendritic cell markers CD21, CD23, and CD35. We aim to enhance the understanding of this neoplasm and alert

Extranodal follicular dendritic cell sarcomas are extremely rare neoplasms included under the hematolymphoid and dendritic group of neoplasms. Histologically, fascicular, whorled spindle cells with sprinkled lymphocytes are typical; however higher grade epithelioid morphology seen in a subset makes diagnosis of follicular dendritic cell sarcoma challenging. Rarity of occurrence, a wide histologic spectrum and a long list of differential diagnostic entities render follicular dendritic cell sarcoma an under-recognized entity susceptible to diagnostic pitfalls. Application of a judicious panel of

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare neoplasm with morphologic and phenotypic features resembling those of normal follicular dendritic cells (FDCs). FDCS has been classified into two distinct entities based on their association with Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV): classic FDCS (cFDCS) and EBV-positive inflammatory FDCS (EBV + IFDCS). Diagnosis relies on characteristic histopathology and immunohistochemistry using FDC markers and EBV in situ hybridization (EBER). This study aimed to compare the clinical presentations, histologic features, and immunoprofiles between these two entities in

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare, low- to intermediate-grade malignancy arising from mesenchymal-derived follicular dendritic cells, which can also present with high-grade pathological features and may rapidly become fatal. Conventional therapeutic strategies, primarily consisting of surgical resection with adjunctive systemic chemotherapy, such as gemcitabine-docetaxel, ifosfamide, doxorubicin, or other regimens, remain inconsistently effective, with median survival notably reduced in advanced or recurrent disease. Given the limited therapeutic options and frequent relapse,

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare malignant neoplasm of follicular dendritic cell origin. It is occasionally associated with unicentric Castleman disease (UCD), particularly the hyaline-vascular (HV) variant (HV-UCD). We report a 56-year-old woman with FDCS arising in the parapharyngeal space in the background of HV-UCD. The patient presented with a painless right neck mass and extensive cervical lymphadenopathy without systemic symptoms. Surgical resection of the parapharyngeal mass revealed FDCS in the lymph nodes with features of HV-UCD. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the f

This study investigated the infrequent occurrence of tonsillar follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) co-existing with schizophrenia, presenting a comprehensive examination of clinical, pathological, and literature aspects. A systematic literature review was conducted, focusing on articles related to "schizophrenia" and "sarcoma," with in-depth analysis of included case reports. Clinical data, pathological findings, and patient follow-up information were collected and synthesized. The study detailed a rare case of FDCS in the tonsil concurrent with schizophrenia, providing insights into diag

Extranodal follicular dendritic cell sarcomas are infrequent diagnostically challenging tumors. Because of their rarity, heterogeneous histomorphologic features and variable histologic grades a significant number of extranodal lesions are prone to be misdiagnosed. Even though they have a characteristic immunoprofile, expression of a range of nonspecific markers is well documented. Even though they are typically negative for keratins, few authors have reported lesions expressing keratin. Keratin expressing tumors are more likely to be misinterpreted by pathologists further deterring their inclu

Epstein-Barr virus-positive inflammatory follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a variant of follicular dendritic cell neoplasm most often arising in the liver or spleen. Two histological patterns can be identified in this variant, namely a granulomatous and an eosinophil-rich one. We present the case of a 69-year-old woman with a splenic mass. After being removed, the mass was gray-whitish with an area of necrosis. Histology showed a diffuse distribution of epithelioid granulomas in a background of a dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate. Rare atypical cells EBV+ and CD21+ were present in the inte

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory pseudotumor-like follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (IPT-like FDCS) is a rare tumor. This study aimed to reveal the radiological characteristics of IPT-like FDCS by radiologic-pathologic correlation.
RESULTS: We analyzed two cases of IPT-like FDCS in the liver, nine in the spleen, and two in both the liver and spleen concomitantly. IPT-like FDCS presented as well-defined iso- or hypodense masses on unenhanced computed tomography (CT) images in both the liver and spleen. Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare and unusual cancer that arises from sustentacular cells of the lymph node that present antigen to B cells, rather than lymphocytes themselves. While surgery for primary disease is still paramount in primary management, for unresectable, recurrent and metastatic tumours, FDCS is frequently treated with anthracycline-based lymphoma chemotherapy regimens. In recent years, it is clear that Programmed Cell Death 1 (PD1)-directed immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are active in Hodgkin lymphoma, but significantly less active in non-Hodgkin's lympho

BACKGROUND: Mediastinal follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is extremely rare. Due to potential under-recognization of this disease, it happens to be misdiagnosed, especially on core needle biopsy. We report 3 cases of mediastinal FDCS and provide a literature review to improve better understanding of the tumor and to reduce misdiagnosis.
METHODS: Three cases of mediastinal FDCS in our clinic practice were studied, including their core needle biopsy and resected specimens, and those cases reported previously in English literature were retrieved and analyzed.
RESULTS: The core needle bio

BACKGROUND: Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a rare malignancy. In addition to the classical histopathologic features, it has also some special morphological variants that can present a challenge in the diagnosis of this disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old male who presented with a left supraclavicular mass was given a final diagnosis of FDCS after lymph node biopsy. The specimen obtained during radical resection revealed five different morphologies, including the classical histological appearance and atypical areas resembling desmoplastic infiltrative carcinoma, anaplastic l
