Mind the Gap: Preliminary Insights Into Rural Australians' Experiences of Oral Health Care.

OBJECTIVE: Australians living in rural areas have a higher prevalence of dental caries and higher potentially preventable hospital admissions for oral health conditions compared to metropolitan-dwelling Australians. Despite high burdens of dental disease and a lack of systems supporting oral health, including water fluoridation and access to dental services, rural Australians have been given limited opportunities to participate in oral health research, resulting in gaps in our understanding. The objective of this study was to explore rural health consumer experiences of using and accessing ora

Oral Health Literacy and Its Association With Oral Health Status Among Patients Attending a Tertiary Dental Hospital: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction  Limited oral health literacy (OHL) can adversely affect preventive behaviors, dental service utilization, treatment adherence, and oral health outcomes. Evidence linking literacy to clinically assessed oral health outcomes among patients attending tertiary dental hospitals remains limited. Objective  To assess OHL and determine its association with clinically assessed oral health conditions among adult dental patients and to identify sociodemographic, behavioral, and healthcare-related factors associated with low to moderate OHL. Materials and methods A hospital-based, cross-sect

Hemorrhagic complications in individuals with liver disease submitted to minor oral surgery.

Individuals with chronic liver disease (CLD) have an increased risk of bleeding from thrombocytopenia and changes in hemostasis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of and the factors associated with the occurrence of bleeding in CLD patients who underwent dental surgical procedures. This was a retrospective study whose data were collected in a hospital dentistry service between 2010 and 2016. The patients were referred from the gastroenterology and liver transplantation services of a university hospital for dental treatment. The study followed the STROBE guidelines. Among the

Preoperative Risk Management Programs at the Top 50 Orthopaedic Institutions Frequently Enforce Strict Cutoffs for BMI and Hemoglobin A1c Which May Limit Access to Total Joint Arthroplasty and Provide Limited Resources for Smoking Cessation and Dental Care.

BACKGROUND: Performing elective orthopaedic surgery on patients with high BMI, poorly controlled hyperglycemia, and who use tobacco can lead to serious complications. Some surgeons use cutoffs for BMI, hemoglobin A1c, and cigarette smoking to limit surgery to patients with lower risk profiles rather than engaging in shared decision-making with patients about those factors. Other studies have suggested this practice may discriminate against people of lower income levels and women. However, the extent to which this practice approach is used by orthopaedic surgeons at leading hospitals is unknown

Patients use these facilities at night and during weekends, mainly because private care is not available at these times. However, motivation for using hospital care during office hours remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics and care pathways of patients consulting a DE department during office hours and to identify the profiles of DE department users. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was performed in the DE department of La Timone Hospital (Marseil

Dental Management of a Patient with Pulmonary Atresia and Ventricular Septal Defect.

Pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect (PA/VSD) is one of the congenital heart diseases that results in cyanosis, susceptibility to bacterial endocarditis, and increased risk of complications during general anesthesia. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is the most common inherited genetic disorder affecting the red blood cells. We aimed to elaborate the potential dental management for patients with this serious condition. This report presents the single-visit dental treatment of a three-year-old female with PA/VSD, G6PD deficiency and rampant caries. The complexity

Increased prevalence of dental caries and poor oral hygiene in juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

OBJECTIVES: Recent decades have seen a trend to treat juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) with increasing immunosuppression to improve the long-term outcome. Poor oral hygiene and dental decay cause significant morbidity, and patients with chronic disease (who may be further immunocompromised by treatment) are at greater risk. This study investigated patients with JIA using standard measures of oral health. METHODS: One hundred and forty-nine patients with JIA were included. The children were attending a regional paediatric rheumatology service and the adults were attending an adult rheumatol

Patient views on the effectiveness of audio-dentistry for emergency triage during COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: When Qatar imposed a nationwide lockdown in accordance with WHO guidelines during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, dental healthcare services were disrupted, limiting services to emergencies and postponing elective procedures due to transmission risks. Teledentistry was introduced to remotely manage dental conditions and reduce hospital admissions. The present study examines patient perceptions of audio-dentistry, a form of teledentistry, in managing dental emergencies during the pandemic and explores factors influencing overall patient satisfaction. METHODS: A retrospecti

Adults with intellectual disability: a mixed-methods investigation of their experiences of dental treatment under general anaesthetic.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the experiences of dental care under general anaesthesia in adults with an intellectual disability. METHODS: The study used an explanatory mixed-methods design. In the initial quantitative phase of the study, a clinical audit of oral health services provided for adults with intellectual disabilities was carried out for individuals who underwent a general anaesthetic (GA) for dental treatment at Christchurch Hospital during a 5-year period. In a qualitative second phase, fifteen semi-structured interviews were carried out for 13 individuals with an intel

Erysipelas: facial lymphangitis.

Two cases of facial lymphangitis have been described, and the pathophysiology of erysipelas has been discussed. Now rarely observed by hospital residents, this potentially serious infection can create considerable diagnostic confusion in medical as well as dental services. Rapid response of erysipelas to penicillin therapy is the modern expectation.

[Cardiological (pharmaco)therapy and dental practice].

In recent years much progress has been made in the treatment of acute coronary syndromes, heart failure and cardiac rhythm disturbances. Polypharmacy including two antiplatelet drugs (aspirin and clopidogrel) is common in many patients after a percutaneous coronary intervention using a 'stent'. Discontinuation of these drugs for invasive dental treatment may result in coronary rethrombosis. However, in many patients with coronary artery disease, a temporal pause in the use of aspirin appears safe and may decrease the risk of bleeding after a dental procedure. An increasing number of patients w

Factors Associated with Emergency Department Use for Non-traumatic Dental Problems: Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: The use of hospital emergency departments (EDs) for non-traumatic dental problems places a significant strain on the health care system and resources. The objective of this scoping review was to identify factors associated with patients' use of EDs for such problems. METHODS: Embase, Medline-Ovid, Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched, and primary studies, systematic reviews and meta-analyses from Canada and the United States, published in English between 2007 and 2017 were selected for inclusion. RESULTS: Of 469 articles, 22 met our inclusion criteria: 6 were conducte

Sugar, dental caries and the incidence of acute rheumatic fever: a cohort study of Māori and Pacific children.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether dental caries, as an indicator of cumulative exposure to sugar, is associated with the incidence of acute rheumatic fever and chronic rheumatic heart disease, in Māori and Pacific children aged 5 and 6 years at their first dental visit. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cohort study was undertaken which linked school dental service records of caries with national hospital discharge and mortality records. Cox models were used to investigate the strength of the association between dental caries and rheumatic fever incidence. RESULTS: A total of 20 333 children who were f
