Sozodont powder dentifrice and Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup: dental nostrums.

The Great Patent Medicine Era (1865-1907) was the golden age of secret remedies--quack, non-prescription medicinal products, sold over-the-counter. Making outrageous and unsubstantiated claims, the makers of dental nostrums purported to effectively treat stained teeth, bad breath, diseased gums, toothache and teething discomfort. No proof was required to substantiate the safety and effectiveness of these concoctions. Advertisements for patent medicines were widespread, appearing in newspapers, almanacs, magazines, trade cards and multiple other media forms. Many dental patent medicines contain

Dentin hypersensitivity. Occlusion of dentinal tubules by brushing with and without an abrasive dentifrice.

Daily toothbrushing with and without an abrasive dentifrice was performed on the ground surfaces of human cervical dentin attached to resin plates, which had been exposed to the oral cavities of 4 subjects for 8 weeks. Brushing with a dentifrice containing calcium hydrogen phosphate as an abrasive caused most of the dentinal tubules to open. The patency of dentinal tubules is thought to induce dentin hypersensitivity. Brushing without a dentifrice, on the other hand, resulted in occlusion of the dentinal tubules with organic pellicle-containing minerals. Furthermore, abrasion did not occur; ho

Remineralization by a monofluorophosphate dentifrice in vitro of root dentin softened by artificial caries.

Artificial caries-softened dentin lesions in root surfaces were treated with 50% slurries of a monofluorophosphate (MFP) dentifrice or a placebo dentifrice twice daily for ten days. Between dentifrice treatments, the lesions were kept in a remineralizing solution. Both treatments resulted in statistically significant remineralization, with the MFP dentifrice being significantly better than the placebo. Deposition of new mineral from the MFP dentifrice occurred about equally at or within the surface zone and at the deepest part of the lesion. Mineral deposition from the placebo appeared to be m

Efficacy of Lippia sidoides Containing-Dentifrice in Children With Dental Caries: A Clinical Study.

Dental caries is the most prevalent dental disease, especially in childhood, involved in a dynamic pathological process, rendering a microbial shift towards survival and overgrowth of acidogenic and aciduric bacterial species, in which the interaction of biofilm and exposure to carbohydrates is directly associated with lesion formation. The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of a dentifrice containing 0.8% Lippia sidoides Cham oil (LSO) against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) in children. This was a randomized and controlled study. Forty participants, aged between 6 and 12 ye

Comparing the Effectiveness of Herbal and Conventional Dentifrices in Reducing Dental Plaque and Gingivitis: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: The important cause of chronic gingivitis was proved to be dental plaque, which is a well-organized biofilm. However, self-care efforts or mechanical control of dental plaque by toothbrushing was important; these alone will not be enough to prevent gingivitis. AIM: The aim of the present systematic review was to compare the effectiveness of herbal and conventional toothpastes on reduction of dental plaque and gingivitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from original scientific papers published in PubMed, Cochrane, Lilacs, and Google Scholar were taken for review up to November 2020
