This paper reports the first case of a dentigerous cyst containing melanin-pigment and melanocytes in the lining epithelium, and the first case of a odontogenic cyst with macroscopically visible pigmentation in the cyst wall. The patient was a 29-year-old Japanese male with a cystic lesion in the left retromolar area of the mandible. Pathologic examination revealed the lesion to be a dentigerous cyst with or without mild surface keratinization, and numerous granules of melanin-pigment were distributed in the basal cells of the epithelial lining. Furthermore, dendritic melanocytes were scattere

OBJECTIVES: Apical periodontitis can appear clinically as apical granulomas or radicular cysts. There is evidence that immunologic factors are involved in the pathogenesis of both pathologies. In contrast to radicular cysts, the dentigerous cysts have a developmental origin. Macrophage polarization (M1 vs M2) is a main regulator of tissue homeostasis and differentiation. There are no studies comparing macrophage polarization in apical granulomas, radicular cysts, and dentigerous cysts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one apical granulomas, 23 radicular cysts, and 23 dentigerous cysts were analyz

Slowly progressing nasal obstructions are usually caused by otorhinolaryngological abnormalities but are sometimes caused by maxillofacial disorders. Two patients, a boy aged 13 years and a man aged 56 years, had unilateral nasal obstruction. The boy was diagnosed with a dentigerous cyst in the maxillary sinus and the man had a nasolabial cyst (Klestadt's cyst). Both patients were treated with trans-oral enucleation and fully recovered.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to compare the proliferative capacity and antiapoptotic capacity of unicystic ameloblastoma (UA), odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), dentigerous cyst (DC) and radicular cyst (RC) by assessing the Ki-67 labeling index (LI) and Bcl-2 LI, respectively.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of twenty-three histopathologically diagnosed UAs, 6 OKCs, 8 DCs and 10 RCs were selected from the archival specimens. Five micrometer thick sections of tissue blocks of the lesions were processed for immunohistochemical staining with Ki-67 and Bc

Dentigerous cysts are the most common developmental cysts of the jaws, most frequently associated with impacted mandibular third molar teeth. Dentigerous cysts around supernumerary teeth, however, account for 5% of all dentigerous cysts, with most developing around a mesiodens in the anterior maxilla. This report describes two cases of a dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted mesiodens. Both of the patients complained of swelling in the maxillary anterior region. Radiographic examination revealed an impacted mesiodens surrounded by a large corticated radiolucency in both cases. A provisi

Dentigerous cyst is the most commonly occurring odontogenic cyst after radicular cyst and accounts for 15% of all true cysts in the jaws. The cyst is more common in mandible than in maxilla. The dentigerous cyst is commonly associated with impacted mandibular third molars. In maxilla, the incidence is rare. Dentigerous cyst in maxillary sinus in association with an impacted third molar is an uncommon entity. We present a case of dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted third molar, completely obliterating the maxillary sinus in a 28-year-old female.

Dentigerous cysts are common odontogenic cysts associated with the crowns of unerupted teeth and are often detected incidentally due to their asymptomatic nature. This case series presents three patients with radiolucent lesions associated with impacted teeth, all of which were clinically silent yet demonstrated significant cystic expansion on radiographic examination. Surgical enucleation of the cysts along with the extraction of the associated impacted teeth was performed in all cases, and histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of dentigerous cyst. Postoperative follow-up reveale

The dentigerous cyst is the second most frequent odontogenic cyst after the radicular one. Typically, dentigerous cysts are asymptomatic and are commonly diagnosed incidentally. Due to the slow, expansive growth dentigerous cysts have the potential for dislocation of adjacent structures (neighbouring teeth, canalis retromolaris), root resorptions and in an extreme case could cause jaw fractures. A histological examination represents a sine qua non, because other more alarming pathologies (odontogenic keratocyst, unicystic ameloblastoma, myxoma, primordial odontogenic tumour etc.) can exhibit c

This report describes a rare case of pericardial effusion owing to Actinomyces odontolyticus in a 52-year-old woman that originated from a dentigerous cyst, which developed on the distal aspect of a lower left third molar. The cyst had remained asymptomatic for a long period, with no specific functional complications. This is the first case report of a patient with acute pericarditis in which the same strain of A odontolyticus was detected in an asymptomatic dentigerous cyst and in the pericardial fluid.

The treatment of ectopic maxillary tooth is surgical removal via a Caldwell-Luc procedure. Trans-nasal extraction of tooth may be attempted if the tooth is small and sited near the maxillary antrum. It is also mandatory to completely remove all pathological antral tissue and thoroughly assess all resected soft tissue histologically. This is important as certain antral pathologies such as dentigerous cyst, as in this case, may co-exist with an ectopic molar. It is thus important to follow-up such patients. In the absence of any unusual histology, surgery provides the patient with a definitive c

There have been only a small number of studies on the association of dentigerous cysts with supernumerary teeth. The purpose of this article was to report the case of a dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted inverted mesiodens that developed secondary to trauma to its predecessor, a non-vital permanent maxillary central incisor. As a consequence of trauma, the central incisor's root development was prematurely arrested and the open apex lay close to the follicle of the underlying inverted mesiodens. The negligent attitude of both the child and parent in seeking dental treatment was a con

Pulp necrosis is a commonly observed sequela in traumatized primary teeth and is one of the possible etiologic factors for the development of dentigerous teeth. This article reports the case of a dentigerous cyst associated with the germ of a permanent maxillary central incisor that developed secondary to trauma to the predecessor primary incisor. The therapeutic approach included endodontic treatment of the primary tooth and marsupialization of the lesion. After 36 months of follow up, the permanent incisor presented with normal physiologic conditions, absence of dental anomalies and erupted

Swelling of upper lip can results from various diseases such as salivary tumors, infections and inflammatory diseases and cyst, typically involving unerrupted teeth, are sometimes associated with supernumerary teeth in the maxillary anterior incisor region called the mesiodens. Mesiodens with dentigerous cyst is actually a rare case in the world and of course in Bangladesh. The overall prevalence of this type of cyst is only 0.15-1.9% of the total population. Recently we have experienced this kind of case like dentigerous cyst with mesiodens in the department of dentistry, Bangladesh Institute

This paper reports a patient with a history of breast cancer, who presented with altered sensation to the right lower lip and chin. An orthopantomogram showed a probable dentigerous cyst associated with an unerupted lower wisdom tooth, which was closely related to the inferior dental canal. The tooth and cyst were enucleated under general anaesthesia. The subsequent histopathology report concluded that the cyst contained metastatic adenocarcinoma from a primary breast tumour.

In an orthodontic practice, it is common to deal with impacted teeth, which are one of the most difficult situations dealt with by dentists. This case report describes the surgical and orthodontic management of the impacted teeth in a large dentigerous cyst. In the initial stage of treatment, the cyst was marsupialized over 7 months. After decompression of the cyst, spontaneous eruptions of the impacted tooth were noticed. Then, they were orthodontically brought into the proper occlusion.

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are rare, benign, expansile lesions of the jaws, often associated with odontogenic cysts like dentigerous cysts, presenting diagnostic challenges due to their variable radiographic and histopathological features. This case report describes an ABC associated with a dentigerous cyst in the mandible, initially misdiagnosed as central giant cell granuloma (CGCG). A 19-year-old male presented with an asymptomatic semi-erupted right mandibular third molar (#48), and panoramic radiography revealed a multilocular radiolucent lesion (22.9 × 46.5 × 20.4 mm) in the posterior

Glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs) and dentigerous cysts may show mucous metaplasia. Central mucoepidermoid carcinoma is very rare and mostly associated with dental cysts. It is hypothesized that odontogenic cysts showing mucus differentiation in their lining, have a propensity to transform into MEC. The present study is the first attempt to explore the relationship between odontogenic cysts [GOCs and dentigerous cysts with mucus metaplasia (DCMM)] and MEC by evaluating immunoexpression of MUC5AC and MUC2. Immunoexpression of MUC5AC and MUC2 was evaluated semiquantitatively in GOCs (20 cases),

INTRODUCTION: Dental cysts can be of inflammatory (radicular cysts) or noninflammatory (dentigerous cysts) origin. Apical periodontitis is a necrosis of the pulp and infection of the root canal causing the development of apical granulomas or radicular cysts. The immunology of granuloma and cyst formation is important because modern root filling materials are immunologically active and can contribute to the resolution of apical granulomas. In contrast, radicular cysts often require apicectomy. A better understanding of the pathophysiology of inflammation and bone resorption in apical periodonti
