AIM: To test the hypothesis that polyacrylic acid-based and calcium silicate materials are able to increase mineral density of artificially demineralized dentine produced by a microcosm model for caries formation.
METHODOLOGY: Forty-five dentine cavities were prepared in nine sound human third molars (five in each tooth). Specimens received a bacterial inoculum and were incubated in BHI plus 5% of sucrose for 96 h to allow biofilm formation. After that, the specimens were scanned in a high energy micro-CT (baseline stack) and then, each cavity was filled with different cements: zinc polycarbo

It is generally accepted that the pain of dental hypersensitivity resulting from gum recession is from the movement of fluid within the exposed tubules of dentin, causing changes in pressure on the nerve within the pulpal cavity. One method of treating hypersensitivity is to occlude the tubules, preventing fluid movement. This article discusses the use of a dye penetration technique, which establishes this mechanism of action for a desensitizing fluoride toothpaste containing calcium and phosphate. Two groups of intact teeth were perfectly sealed with enamel paint. Windows 100-micro to 200-mic

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) causes sharp pain due to external stimuli transmitted through dentinal tubules (DTs) in exposed dentin. Current desensitizers struggle to provide sufficient DT occlusion depth and density, limiting long-term effectiveness under daily erosion and friction. Inspired by fish schooling behavior, we introduce an adaptive hydrogel desensitizer (STU) composed of "sardines" (tannic acid and silk fibroin) and "predators" (urea). The "sardines" form a tightly packed hydrogel "shoal" through hydrogen bonds, while the "predators" disrupt these bonds, transforming STU into a lo

Bone autografts are often used for reconstruction of bone defects; however, due to the limitations of autografts, researchers have been in search of bone substitutes. Dentin is of particular interest for this purpose due to high similarity to bone. This in vitro study sought to assess the surface characteristics and biological properties of dentin samples prepared with different treatments. This study was conducted on regular (RD), demineralized (DemD), and deproteinized (DepD) dentin samples. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used for surface characterization.

BACKGROUND: External apical root resorption is a pathologic consequence of orthodontic tooth movement. Cementum and dentin are removed from the root surface while active force is present.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify and quantify extracellular matrix proteins, dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1), dentin phosphophoryn (PP), and dentin sialoprotein (DSP) in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of subjects undergoing orthodontic treatment.
METHODS: Subjects with mild (less than 2mm) and severe (more than 2mm) root resorption during orthodontic treatment were identified by radiogra

The growing interest in oral/systemic links demand new paradigms to understand disease processes. New opportunities for dental research, particularly in the fields of neuroscience and endocrinology will emerge. The role of the hypothalamus portion of the brain cannot be underestimated. Under the influence of nutrition, it plays a significant role in the systemic model of dental caries. Currently, the traditional theory of dental caries considers only the oral environment and does not recognize any significant role for the brain. The healthy tooth, however, has a centrifugal fluid flow to nouri

The buccal surfaces of premolar teeth are common sites of gingival recession, generally attributed to overzealous oral hygiene. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of replicas made from dental impressions was applied to document the micromorphology of the buccocervical region of all premolar teeth in 27 dentally healthy, young adults. The SEM observations were correlated with clinical examination. Of the 216 sites, one-third, predominantly the maxillary first premolars, had gingival recession, but fewer than 50% were clinically discernible. The exposed roots were devoid of cementum, and the den

Pulpal complications involving inflammation, degradation, and necrosis are the result of a series of traumatic injuries. The restorative dentist must minimize the trauma to dentin and pulp inflicted during clinical procedures, including that inflicted during tooth preparation. Part 11 of this series discusses the structural and physiologic changes in the pulp-dentin complex that result from crown and cavity preparation and the clinical implication of these changes.

Luting Cements are still a source of frustration to the dentist. None of the cements currently available satisfies everyone, including the patient. The problems encountered when trying to obtain adhesion to a wet substance such as dentin are well-known (Christensen, 1994). The cause of postcementation sensitivity continues to a perplexing problem.

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the mineralization process of mantle dentine by ultrastructural and element-analytical investigation of matrix vesicles and successive stages. Upper second molars of albino rats were cryofixed and embedded in resin after freeze drying. Semithin dry sections were prepared for analyzing the calcium and phosphorus concentrations in the mineralized matrix vesicles or noduli, larger mineralized islands, and the mantle dentine. For ultrastructural studies, it was necessary to reduce section contact with hydrous fluids to a minimum in order to avoid preparat

Previous experiments in rat incisors indicate that the odontoblasts form an impermeable barrier which prevents fluid movement between pulp and dentine. The permeability of the odontoblast layer has now been investigated in pig molars which are more analogous to human teeth. The heads and necks of anesthetised piglets were perfused intra-arterially with lanthanum nitrate in Ringer's solution or with Ringer's solution alone. Molar tooth germs were removed, sliced, fixed by immersion and embedded in resin. Ultrathin sections including pulp and dentine were examined by transmission electron micros

This study evaluated whether Dentin Matrix Protein 1 (DMP-1) enhances the effect of P11-4, a synthetic self-assembling peptide, on the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of caries-affected dentin (CAD). Coronal dentin slices (∼4 mm) from 48 extracted human third molars were allocated to six groups (n = 8): sound dentin (C+), untreated CAD (C-), and CAD treated with DMP-1 (1 µg/mL), P11-4 (1 µg/mL), P11-4 (1 mg/mL), or DMP-1 (1 µg/mL) plus P11-4 (0.5 µg/mL). CAD was generated with a Streptococcus mutans (UA159) biofilm model and selective caries removal to a leathery endpoint. Treatments were ap

Microscopy and microanalysis : the official journal of Microscopy Society of America, Microbeam Analysis Society, Microscopical Society of Canada2026eng
Understanding the diagenesis of fossil teeth requires linking microstructure to chemistry across spatial scales to distinguish primary biogenic signals from diagenetic signals introduced by fluid-mineral interactions. Here, we investigate a Cretaceous theropod tooth using a multiscale analytical workflow that combines scanning and transmission electron microscopy with atom probe tomography. The results reveal a hierarchical pattern of diagenetic alteration in both enamel and dentine spanning from the microscale to the near-atomic scale. Enamel largely preserves its densely packed apatite cryst

Dentin hypersensitivity is a common oral condition characterized by sharp pain triggered by exposed dentin in response to external stimuli, reflecting complex interactions between dentin structure, fluid dynamics, and neural responses, although its underlying biological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Among the proposed mechanisms of dentinal nociception, the odontoblast transducer theory suggests that odontoblasts act as sensory cells capable of detecting stimuli and activating adjacent pulpal nerve fibers. This study aimed to characterize the scientific landscape of the odontoblas

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the incorporation of elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) on the adhesion maturation of mineral trioxide aggregates (MTA). Two types of ELPs (V125 and V125E8) were genetically synthesized. V125 consisted of 125 repeating pentapeptides (Val-Pro-Gly-Xaa-Gly) and V125E8 was functionalized with octaglutamic acid in the C-terminus of V125; both were diluted to 10 wt% in solution. Three 1.5 mm diameter holes in dentin discs were filled with MTA mixed with either a solution of ELP or deionized water. Push-out bond strength tests were performed followi
