Applications of botulinum toxin in dentistry: A comprehensive review.

The horizons of treatment options in dentistry are broadening rapidly. In this scenario, applications of unconventional treatment options like use of botulinum toxin (BT) are gaining momentum. The use of BT has been popularly accepted in esthetic procedures like management of facial wrinkles; however, it has been documented to be successful in a variety of conditions. Of particular interest to this paper are applications of BT in the maxillofacial region, concerned to dentistry. BT offers a transient, reversible, relatively safe treatment option to many conditions of interest to a dental pract

Eugenol Nanoparticles in Dental Composites: Literature Review of Antimicrobial, Anti-Inflammatory, and Clinical Applications.

The formation of microbial colonies and biofilms are common on dental restorations. This can lead to secondary caries. Another common complication is the post-operative inflammation noted in patients. The traditionally used dental composites are designed without the inherent components having antimicrobial and inflammatory properties. This has become a major challenge in current restorative dentistry applications. In order to address these challenges, a possible approach is to incorporate eugenol nanoparticles (NPs) into dental composites. This approach can offer dual therapeutic benefits sinc

[Effects of different methods of tooth resection in suckling piglets].

Epizootic examinations were made on 796 newborn piglets to test the consequences of the resection of a piglet's canine and lateral incisor teeth on its first day of life. As a comparative examination the resection was carried out with side-cutter pliers or with the teeth grinder PIGMATIC 110. A third group of piglets was not treated. Histological, radiographic and bacteriological examinations were made of 10 piglets--in each case with piglets with the resection with side-cutter pliers or with the teeth grinder. 48% of ground teeth reacted with an inflammation of the pulp. The clipping of the c

The aetiology and pathogenesis of bone resorption in chronic periodontal disease.

Loss of bone is a characteristic feature of periodontitis and in later life assumes increasing importance as a cause of tooth morbidity and tooth loss. The rate, pattern and form of bone loss varies between individuals, from tooth to tooth and from tooth surface to tooth surface. This variation may be attributed to specific organisms or groups of organisms in subgingival plaque, factors that enhance plaque retention or factors that modify the course or nature of the disease. Certain high risk individuals should be identified at an early stage of the disease process. Plaque is the sole cause of

Oral manifestations and treatment of a child with Sjögren's syndrome.

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic inflammatory systemic autoimmune disease affecting the exocrine, salivary and lacrimal glands. The condition occurs more often in adults and is rare in childhood. SS should be considered in the differential diagnosis of recurrent parotitis and keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Oral manifestations include early tooth decay and xerostomia. Treatment consists of operative dentistry and saliva management. This paper reports a case of a 10-year-old Brazilian boy with SS, stressing the oral manifestations, treatment conduct, clinical importance and need for an early di

Rotary Instrument-Induced Soft Palatal Laceration During Dental Restorative Treatment: A Case Report.

Iatrogenic soft tissue injuries are recognized complications of dental procedures, most commonly affecting the tongue, buccal mucosa, and gingiva. However, trauma involving posterior palatal structures remains rarely documented. This case report describes a deep soft palatal laceration sustained during posterior restorative dental treatment following accidental contact with a high-speed rotary instrument. The injury resulted in mucosal and muscular disruption requiring surgical repair, which was subsequently complicated by early suture dehiscence due to the high-mobility nature of the soft pal

Aspects of Clinical Malpractice in Endodontics.

The clinical dentistry and endodontic procedures involve very technique-sensitive procedures, therefore exposing the operator to risks of causes not only damage to patients but also leads to malpractice. Among various disciplines of dentistry, endodontics-related cases witness the most frequently filed malpractice claims. This is due to the fact that the endodontic treatment procedures involve operative and surgical procedures, using a variety of medicaments and techniques. The endodontic procedural errors can be preoperative errors (such as incorrect diagnosis and misinterpretation), intraope

Selective excavation and ozone therapy: new frontier of mini-invasive caries treatment in MIH paediatric patients. A case report.

The term hypomineralisation of molars and incisors (MIH), introduced in 2001 by Weerheijm et al., describes a clinical state of hypomineralisation of permanent molars with frequent involvement of the incisors. MIH is considered a global dental problem with a prevalence ranging from 2.4% to 40.2% in the entire world paediatric population. The continuous increase in the prevalence of enamel anomalies, including MIH, indicates the need to define new intervention protocols based on the technological advances that are revolutionising paediatric dentistry. The use of ozone associated with the select

Students' perspectives on 3D-printed-simulated-caries teeth in transition to operative practice.

The transition from pre-clinical to clinical operative dentistry requires effective training tools; however traditional typodont teeth often fall short in simulating clinical scenarios such as caries preparation. This study evaluated the perspectives of 71 third-year dental students from the classes of 2024 and 2025 at Harvard School of Dental Medicine on the use of 3D-printed caries teeth as a preparatory tool. Students participated in case-based collaborative learning and operative exercises using these models, with pre- and post-surveys capturing feedback on realism, usability, and educatio
