Due to the increase in the population with special needs and the significant difficulty in their dental management, it is essential to analyze the caries prevalence in this group of patients. The systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA statement. A search was performed on 9 May 2022 and updated on 5 June 2022, in three databases: Pubmed, Scielo, and Cochrane library. Studies involving the analysis of caries in permanent teeth in patients with special needs were included. A total of 1277 studies were analyzed and 21 studies were selected. Quality assessments were performed using an

Available scientific literature is scarce in covering cases involving impaction of permanent mandibular first molars treated in mixed dentition patients. The purpose of this report was to present the case of a 7-year-old patient with bilateral impaction of permanent mandibular first molars treated early using a simple and effective removable appliance. The proposed intervention involved the construction of a removable acrylic appliance with bilateral titanium-molybdenum alloy distalizing springs to disimpact and allow complete eruption of the molars. A button was bonded to the occlusal surface

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of pre-eruptive intracoronal dentine radiolucencies (PEIR) and subject factors or dental conditions associated with PEIR from orthopantograms (OPGs) in unerupted permanent teeth of children.
METHODS: OPGs were evaluated for 1,571 subjects (807 males, 764 females) with mean age (8.72 ± 2.5) years. Unerupted permanent teeth prior to emergence into the oral cavity were assessed. The Chi square test was used to determine statistical differences between the group showing and the group not showing the defect with regards to sex, stage of dental development, pres

This study investigated the developmental changes of mandibular permanent canines and premolars in early mixed dentition using panoramic radiographs. Positions of cusps and root apices of the teeth relative to the inferior border of mandible were evaluated. The developmental stages of the teeth were divided into three stages. There were few changes in the inclination of the three teeth. The permanent canine began to erupt before stage 2 and the second premolar began to erupt after stage 2. The distance between the inferior border of the mandible and apices of the three teeth was almost fixed i

Pulpal healing patterns were studied in a clinical material of 637 luxated and 95 root-fractured permanent incisors followed routinely for up to 11 years. It was found that pulpal healing patterns could generally be divided into 3 groups according to the degree of injury sustained by the pulp: little, moderate or severe. Thus after luxation injuries, pulp survival could be without radiographic change (PS), with pulp canal obliteration (PCO) or nonhealing (pulp necrosis (PN]. After root fracture, similar healing patterns could be observed: healing by hard tissue union of fragments (HT), by conn

BACKGROUND: To determine the association between the facial biotype, the overbite and the overjet in digital lateral skull radiographs.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 230 digital skull lateral radiographs of patients with permanent dentition with 18 to 55 years old were used as sample. The VERT index and the Ricketts analysis were considered to identify the facial biotype, overbite and overjet.
RESULTS: The facial biotype with the highest prevalence was dolichofacial with 36.52% (n=84), being more frequent in the female sex. However, the mesofacial biotype predominated in the male sex. On the other h

BACKGROUND: Developmental anomalies in the number of teeth can result from disturbances in the developing dental lamina of the tooth. The dental lamina may become hyperactive leading to the formation of a supernumerary tooth or may fail to proliferate leading to the congenital absence of a primary or permanent tooth.
AIMS: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence and distribution of hypodontia and hyperdontia in permanent dentition, excluding the third molars in children in Vadodara, Gujarat.
SETTING AND DESIGN: A descriptive, analytical, and cross-sectional study was conducted to d

The patient was a 16-year-old Japanese girl whose chief complaints were crowding and transposition of the maxillary canine and first premolar. A setup model was used to preoperatively align the teeth in their transposed positions. The amount of postoperative reshaping was estimated for the occlusal surfaces of the teeth. However, the patient did not wish to have her teeth reduced by reshaping or to have composite materials for restorative camouflage. Because she strongly expected alignment of her teeth in the correct intra-arch position, her transposed teeth were corrected without extraction o

Odontodysplasia is an uncommon clinicopathological condition with a variety of expressions. Although it is generally recognized as a localized disorder of dental tissue, its aetiology has not yet been well explained. In the present case, odontodysplasia with oligodontia in the permanent dentition is reported. The patient was in good health with normal stature and no other physical abnormalities. His parents and siblings were dentally and medically normal. The primary teeth appeared to be normal except for the primary second molars, where the enamel was malformed. However, the permanent incisor

Hemifacial microsomia (HFM), a developmental abnormality involving the first and second branchial arches, is one of the most common craniofacial abnormalities. Although the general presentations of hemifacial microsomia--such as unilateral microtia, macrostomia, and hypoplasia of the mandibular ramus and condyle--are wellknown, the effects on the teeth are not well-documented. This study examined the primary and permanent tooth dimensions of dental casts of 50 hemifacial microsomia patients compared with those of 50 normal control patients matched for sex and dental status. The results showed

One thousand and twenty-four children with a mean age of 6.41 yr were examined to determine the mean ages of eruption for the first permanent molars and the permanent central and lateral incisors. The youngest observed age for the eruption of any permanent tooth amongst girls was 4.50 yr and amongst boys, 4.31 yr. The eruption ages were on the whole later than those reported in most African studies, but were very similar to those found for Kenyan African and American blacks.
