Confrontation with others' emotions changes bodily resonance differently in those with low and high levels of depersonalization.

We present novel research on the cortical dynamics of atypical perceptual and emotional processing in people with symptoms of depersonalization-derealization disorder (DP-DR). We used electroencephalography (EEG)/event-related potentials (ERPs) to delineate the early perceptual mechanisms underlying emotional face recognition and mirror touch in adults with low and high levels of DP-DR symptoms (low-DP and high-DP groups). Face-sensitive visual N170 showed markedly less differentiation for emotional versus neutral face-voice stimuli in the high- than in the low-DP group. This effect was relate

High Betrayal Adolescent Sexual Abuse and Nonsuicidal Self-Injury: The Role of Depersonalization in Emerging Adults.

Adolescent sexual abuse can interfere with healthy development. Sexual abuse that is perpetrated by close other(s)-high betrayal-can be additionally harmful, with sexual abuse being linked with dissociation and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). Depersonalization, a dissociative subtype characterized by disconnection between oneself and one's body and/or thoughts, may further explain the role of dissociation in NSSI. The purpose of the current study was to: 1) isolate the impact of adolescent sexual abuse on NSSI; and 2) examine depersonalization as a pathway between high betrayal adolescent sexu

Factorial Model of Obese Adolescents: The Role of Body Image Concerns and Selective Depersonalization-A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship binding body weight to psychological well-being is unclear. The present study aims at identifying the contribution, and specificity, of some dimensions (i.e., eating-related symptoms, body image disorders, eating habits, personality traits, and emotional difficulties) characterizing the psychological profile of obese adolescents (749 participants, 325 females; 58.3% normal-weight, 29.9% overweight, and 11.7% obese; mean age = 16.05, SD = 0.82). METHODS: By introducing the scores obtained by standardized self-report tools into a generalized linear model, a factoria

Depersonalization, self-esteem and body image in male-to-female transsexuals compared to male and female controls.

Whether postoperative male-to-female transsexuals differ in regard to measures of self- and body image from a nontranssexual control group was investigated. A group of 30 postoperative male-to-female transsexuals and control groups of 30 males and 30 females completed self-report measures (depersonalization, self-esteem, gender identity traits, body image). Results showed that transsexuals and males scored higher on self-esteem and dynamic body image than the females did. No differences between the groups were found in terms of depersonalization and satisfaction. Transsexuals and females descr

White matter abnormalities in first-episode patients with depersonalization/derealization disorder: A tract-based spatial statistics study.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging studies on depersonalization / derealization disorder (DPD) have revealed that there are structural and functional alterations across numerous brain regions. However, to date, the exact white matter abnormalities that are associated with different clinical symptoms and cognitive impairments in first-episode, drug-naïve patients with DPD remain unclear. METHODS: Overall, 25 first-episode, drug-naïve patients with DPD and 23 healthy controls were recruited and underwent DTI scans. The tract-based spatial statistics analysis was conducted in order to determine white matt

Childhood maltreatment type and severity predict depersonalization and derealization in treatment-seeking women with posttraumatic stress disorder.

The dissociative subtype of posttraumatic stress disorder (D-PTSD) is estimated to occur in approximately 14% of those with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and is characterized by clinically significant dissociative symptoms in addition to typical PTSD symptoms. Prior research has found childhood maltreatment contributes to dissociation and D-PTSD susceptibility, but more nuanced questions about the nature of childhood maltreatment remain unexplored. We investigated how childhood maltreatment type and severity are associated with the dissociative symptoms of D-PTSD among women with PTSD

Reduction of depersonalization during social stress through cognitive therapy for social anxiety disorder: A randomized controlled trial.

Symptoms of depersonalization during feared social situations are commonly experienced by individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD). Despite its clinical relevance, it is not addressed in standard treatment manuals and it remains unclear if depersonalization is reduced by well-established treatments. This study investigated whether cognitive therapy (CT) for SAD effectively reduces depersonalization and whether pre-treatment severity of depersonalization predicts or mediates treatment outcome. In a randomized controlled trial, patients underwent the standardized Trier Social Stress Test b

Depersonalization/derealization and its relationship to mood and anxiety disorders in the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication (NCS-R).

BACKGROUND: Depersonalization/derealization (dpdr) is known to occur across mood and anxiety disorders (MAD) and has been proposed as a marker of worse illness. However, despite the well-known clinical association, there are no epidemiological data on the relationship between dpdr and MAD. METHOD: In this NCS-R analysis clinically significant dpdr (DPDR-C) was defined as "sometimes" or "often" past-month endorsement of depersonalization and/or derealization in the absence of other pathological dissociation. Six past-month MAD diagnoses were examined: DSM-IV generalized anxiety disorder, panic

A Model of Body Perception Disturbances in Chronic Limb Pain: The Predictive Role of Kinesiophobia, Depersonalization and Symptom Severity.

BACKGROUND: Body Perception Disturbances (BPD) are common in chronic limb pain conditions characterised by negative feelings toward the limb and a reduced sense of agency. Prior research has focused on isolated associations between psychological factors, pain hypersensitivity and BPD. Therefore, an integrated examination of the interconnections between these variables within a theory-driven model is necessary. METHODS: The model hypothesises that pain hypersensitivity (hyperalgesia, allodynia), directly linked with BPD (assessed by the Bath-BPD and Neurobehavioral questionnaires) or indirectl

The Multidimensional Inventory of Dissociation (MID) in Depersonalization Disorder: General Findings with a Clinical Emphasis on Memory and Identity Disturbances.

The Multidimensional Inventory of Dissociation (MID) was administered to 23 participants diagnosed with DSM-IV-TR Depersonalization Disorder (DDD) by structured interview. The MID has not been previously examined in DDD and does not generate a diagnostic formula for the disorder. Mean MID score for the sample was modestly elevated at 18.54, and was significantly correlated with Dissociative Experiences Scale, Cambridge Depersonalization Scale, and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire scores. Criterion A (General Dissociation) Depersonalization and Depersonalization scale scores were markedly elevate

Depersonalization and derealization in embarrassing social interactions: an experience sampling study in social phobia, major depression and controls.

OBJECTIVE: The study explored the duration and frequency of depersonalization (DP) and derealization (DR) in embarrassing social interactions in the everyday life of individuals with social phobia (SP), major depressive disorder (MDD) and controls. METHODS: Experience sampling was used (seven days, five surveys per day). A total of N = 165 patients (n = 47 SP, n = 118 MDD) and n = 119 controls were included. DP/DR were assessed whenever an interaction has been indicated as embarrassing. RESULTS: Individuals with SP and MDD experienced more embarrassing social interactions than controls and,

Anomalous Self-Experiences: Markers of Schizophrenia Vulnerability or Symptoms of Depersonalization Disorder? A Phenomenological Investigation of Two Cases.

BACKGROUND: Basic self-disturbance (BSD) is proposed to constitute the clinical core of schizophrenia spectrum disorders, including prodromal states and schizotypy. Anomalous self-experiences (ASEs) are suggested as phenotypic variants of BSD, representing markers of schizophrenia vulnerability. However, ASEs are not restricted to the schizophrenia spectrum, but may also occur in non-psychotic states like depersonalization disorder (DPD). It is unclear to what extent the prevalence and nature of ASEs are differing between the two conditions. The main aim of this paper is to assess and compare

When you avoid your feelings, you may feel even worse: how depersonalization puts you at risk of depression.

BACKGROUND: The clinical form of depersonalization affects approximately 1%-2% of the adult population. This study aimed to describe the symptoms of depersonalization in a non-clinical sample and to operationalize depersonalization as a regulatory mechanism. This article introduces the Depersonalization Mechanism Scale, 41-item measure developed to assess one's tendency for depersonalization in response to overstimulation. The aim of the study is to explore how depersonalization mechanism is associated with cognitive and behavioral emotion regulation strategies, depression, and anxiety. METHO

Strange-face illusions during eye-to-eye gazing in dyads: specific effects on derealization, depersonalization and dissociative identity.

Experimentally induced strange-face illusions can be perceived when two individuals look at each other in the eyes under low illumination for about 10 minutes. This task of subject-other eye-to-eye gazing produces the following perceptions by the subject: (i) mild to huge deformations and color/shape changes of face and facial features; (ii) lifeless, unmoving faces and immaterial presences akin to out-of-body experiences; (iii) pseudo-hallucinations, enlightened 'idealized' faces and personalities - rather than the other's actual face. Dissociative phenomena seem to be involved, whereas the e

Pain and tactile dissociation, derealization and depersonalization symptoms in women and recalled traumatic events in childhood, adolescence and early adulthood.

INTRODUCTION: The symptoms of dissociation, depersonalization and derealization are often associated with exposure of patients to mental and physical injuries, usually occurring in childhood. Most of these observations were carried out in populations of patients with various disorders (posttraumatic, conversion-dissociation, personality disorders - especially borderline), who reported their exposure to adverse life circumstances through questionnaire interviews. AIM: Assessment of the risk associated with various traumatic events in childhood and adolescence concerning the symptoms of pain an

The Dissociative Subtype of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Among Adolescents: Co-Occurring PTSD, Depersonalization/Derealization, and Other Dissociation Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the co-occurrence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociation in a clinical sample of trauma-exposed adolescents by evaluating evidence for the depersonalization/derealization dissociative subtype of PTSD as defined by the DSM-5 and then examining a broader set of dissociation symptoms. METHOD: A sample of treatment-seeking, trauma-exposed adolescents 12 to 16 years old (N = 3,081) from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network Core Data Set was used to meet the study objectives. Two models of PTSD/dissociation co-occurrence w

Depersonalization experiences are strongly associated with dizziness and vertigo symptoms leading to increased health care consumption in the German general population.

This study investigated the association of depersonalization (DP) experiences with dizziness and its impact on subjective impairment and health care use. Trained interviewers surveyed a representative sample of 1287 persons using standardized self-rating questionnaires on dizziness, DP, and mental distress. Symptoms of dizziness were reported by 15.8% (n = 201). Thereof, 62.7% endorsed at least one symptom of DP, 40% reported impairment by symptoms of DP, and 8.5% reported clinically significant DP. Regression analyses identified DP as a significant, independent predictor for dizziness symptom
