Trophoblastic debris extruded from hydatidiform molar placentae activates endothelial cells: Possible relevance to the pathogenesis of preeclampsia.

INTRODUCTION: Preeclampsia is currently thought to be induced by a placental factor that triggers maternal endothelial activation. It is now well known that trophoblastic debris shed from the placenta into the maternal blood is associated with this disease. Hydatidiform mole is a pathological pregnancy characterised by hyperplastic trophoblast with little or no fetal development. Women with molar pregnancies may exhibit symptoms resembling preeclampsia. Deportation of trophoblastic debris occurs in molar pregnancies but, whether trophoblastic debris from molar pregnancies expresses pathogenic

Immigration-Related Sociopolitical Stress, Mental Health, and Tobacco Use Among Mexican American College Students.

Sociopolitical stress associated with the policies and rhetoric coming from recent U.S. presidential administrations is of particular concern vis-à-vis Hispanic individuals, who have been disproportionately targeted for detention and deportation. Such stress may be associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety, and ultimately with tobacco use. However, there is a paucity of research examining how sociopolitical stress is associated with mental health problems and substance use among Hispanic emerging adults. Accordingly, the present study was designed to examine the extent to which, withi

HIV-Tuberculosis Co-Infection Among Immigrants and Refugees in the United States: An Integrative Review.

HIV-tuberculosis (HIV-TB) co-infection remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among people living with HIV and disproportionately affects immigrant and refugee communities in the United States. While antiretroviral therapy has improved HIV outcomes, cultural, social, and psychological barriers hinder timely diagnosis and sustained HIV-TB co-infection care in these populations. This integrative review aims to synthesize evidence on cultural, social, and psychological factors influencing access to diagnosis, treatment, and management of HIV, TB, and HIV-TB co-infection among immigran

Documenting best practices for maintaining access to HIV prevention, care and treatment in an era of shifting immigration policy and discourse.

Changes in the United States federal-level political landscape have been felt within immigrant communities, and the public health clinics that serve them. We sought to document how HIV prevention and care clinics are reaching and retaining their immigrant community patients during a period of retrenchment of accessible public resources and immigrant rights. From May 2018 through January 2019, we conducted 20 in-depth interviews with clinicians, case workers, advocates, legal experts, and peer navigators in Northern and Central California. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. Several theme

Perspectives on cervical cancer screening and prevention: challenges faced by providers and patients along the Texas-Mexico border.

BACKGROUND: The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) and Laredo regions located along the Texas-Mexico border consist of seven counties with a population of approximately 1.5 million people and a high uninsured rate (33.5%). Cervical cancer mortality in these border counties is approximately 30% higher than the rest of Texas. The RGV and Laredo areas were studied to better understand the state of access to cervical cancer prevention services along the Texas-Mexico border. METHODS: Data on the population served and the services provided were analyzed to determine the gap between cervical cancer screenings

The harm inside: injection during incarceration among male injection drug users in Tijuana, Mexico.

Limited access to sterile syringes and condoms in correctional facilities make these settings high risk environments for HIV transmission. Although incarceration among injection drug users (IDUs) is common, there is limited information regarding specific IDU risk behaviors inside. We examined correlates of incarceration, injection inside and syringe sharing inside among male IDUs recruited in Tijuana, Mexico, using respondent driven sampling (RDS) (n=898). An interviewer administered survey collected data on sociodemographic, behavioral and contextual characteristics. Associations with (a) his

Prolonged family separation under U.S. immigration law: Mechanisms of racialized harms to lawfully present immigrant parents.

Prolonged family separation in the context of immigration to the United States has largely focused on separation resulting from immigrant detention and the deportation of undocumented parents. Less visible are the ways that U.S. immigration laws and policies are constructed and implemented such that they prolong family separation for lawfully present immigrants in the United States from their families abroad. This article addresses this gap. The detrimental effects of prolonged family separation in the context of immigration are discussed. Three key immigration law mechanisms that prolong fami

Awareness of Toxic Stress and Adverse Childhood Experiences among Dutch Pediatric Health Care Providers: A National Survey.

Introduction: Early recognition of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and adequate interventions are required to prevent negative effects on the child's mental and physical health later in life caused by toxic stress. This study aimed to assess how familiar the concepts of ACEs and toxic stress are among Dutch pediatric health care providers (PHCPs) and whether screening for ACEs is standard practice in the Netherlands. Methods: From October 2018 until March 2019, a nation-wide questionnaire survey was held. Results: Of 548 participating PHCPs, 29% were familiar with toxic stress, 67% were fam

Displacement and disease: The Shan exodus and infectious disease implications for Thailand.

Decades of neglect and abuses by the Burmese government have decimated the health of the peoples of Burma, particularly along her eastern frontiers, overwhelmingly populated by ethnic minorities such as the Shan. Vast areas of traditional Shan homelands have been systematically depopulated by the Burmese military regime as part of its counter-insurgency policy, which also employs widespread abuses of civilians by Burmese soldiers, including rape, torture, and extrajudicial executions. These abuses, coupled with Burmese government economic mismanagement which has further entrenched already perv

Size of portally deprived liver lobe after portal vein ligation and additional partial hepatectomy: Result of balancing proliferation and apoptosis.

The liver has the ability to maintain its total size by adjusting the size of the individual liver lobes differently in response to regeneration- and atrophy-stimuli. Portal vein ligation (PVL) drives the ligated lobe to undergo atrophy whereas partial hepatectomy (PHx) drives the total remnant liver to regenerate. We hypothesize that the size of the PVL-lobe is dependent on the balance between the extent of PVL and the extent of PHx inducing a complex interplay between hepatocyte proliferation, apoptosis and autophagy. Lewis-rats were subjected to either 20%PVL + 70%PHx or 70%PVL + 20%PHx. Co

Assessing chronological age of unaccompanied minors in southern Italy.

The increasing volume of, and subsequent complexities resulting from, migratory flows in the broader context of globalization has led to a range of problems, not only the protection of human rights and disease control but also the identification of those with the right to apply for refugee status and the age assessment of unaccompanied minors. Italy is a magnet for immigration from other countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea because the Italian coasts are within easy reach. In Italy, as in other western countries, unaccompanied asylum seekers deemed to be younger than 18 years face a very

Impact of county and state immigration policies on immigrant household enrollment in the supplemental nutrition assistance program.

INTRODUCTION: Low-income immigrants who are eligible to participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participate at lower rates compared to non-immigrants. Immigrant households may be more likely to participate in SNAP if they live in areas with policies that integrate them into society and protect them from deportation. METHODS: Data on low-income immigrant households came from the 2019 American Community Survey (N = 87,678). The outcome was whether any household member received SNAP in the previous 12 months. Immigrant policy exposures came from two sources: the State

Musculoskeletal Pain and Cardiovascular Risk in Hispanic/Latino Meatpacking Workers.

BACKGROUND: Most meatpacking workers have pain affecting their back, arms, and/or wrists from work-related repetitive motions, forceful exertion, and awkward positioning. Chronic musculoskeletal pain is associated with obesity, hypertension, type II diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. Hispanic/Latino workers in the meatpacking industry are a vulnerable population; limited English, lack of health insurance, and fear of deportation often deter them from seeking care where preventable cardiovascular risks might be detected. The purpose of this study was to examine perceived health and actual card

Interventions facilitating access to perinatal care for migrant women without medical insurance: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Poor antenatal monitoring is associated with higher rates of maternal complications at delivery and serious threats to neonatal well-being. This scoping review intended to explore existing interventions and policies addressing access to perinatal care among pregnant migrant women without medical insurance (PMWMI). Additionally, it will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of these interventions, as well as their associated costs. Trophoblast expression of the minor histocompatibility antigen HA-1 is regulated by oxygen and is increased in placentas from preeclamptic women.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal T-cells reactive towards paternally inherited fetal minor histocompatibility antigens are expanded during pregnancy. Placental trophoblast cells express at least four fetal antigens, including human minor histocompatibility antigen 1 (HA-1). We investigated oxygen as a potential regulator of HA-1 and whether HA-1 expression is altered in preeclamptic placentas. METHODS: Expression and regulation of HA-1 mRNA and protein were examined by qRT-PCR and immunohistochemistry, using first, second, and third trimester placentas, first trimester placental explant cultures, and t

Growing up in transit. Personal development and resistance of migrant adolescents travelling through Mexico unaccompanied.

Mexico is a major global migration corridor. The last decade has seen an increase in adolescents travelling unaccompanied from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, mainly due to violence and natural disasters. This group of migrants is exposed to migration risks such as trafficking and exploitation, as well as multiple deportations and long waiting times without appropriate access to health and education services. These conditions have significant documented adverse impacts on health and mental health, but the impact on personal development has been less explored. Thus, this article aims to ex

An 'arsenal for the supply of ammunition for the defence of vaccination': the Jenner Society and anti-anti-vaccinationism in England, 1896-1906.

Although historians have given close attention to the anti-vaccination movement that gripped late-Victorian England, relatively little scholarship explores how doctors and health officials responded or asks what strategies and assumptions structured how they might oppose the vaccine opponents. This article traces the advent and actions of the Jenner Society, a smallpox vaccination advocacy group founded in 1896 by Dr. Francis Bond. His goal was to publicly confront the leading anti-vaccinationists and to effectively conduct an anti-anti-vaccination campaign. The Jenner Society appeared amidst

Emotional Testimonies: An Ethnographic Study of Emotional Suffering Related to Migration from Mexico to Arizona.

It is increasingly argued that social and economic inequities poorly affect overall health. One of the means through which these inequities are translated to the body is via negative emotions, which carry known psychological and physiological responses. This paper examines migration-related psychosocial stressors impacting first-generation Mexican immigrants in southern Arizona, and reports on the primary emotional experiences immigrants associate with these stressors. Data were drawn from a qualitative, ethnographic study conducted over the course of 14 months during 2013-2014 with first-gene
