Prompt recognition of suicidal intent can prevent suicide in the elderly. Some psychiatric disorders, such as depression, psychoses and organic brain syndromes, can predispose these persons to suicide, as can medical disorders that result in pain, disability or dysfunction. Other factors that increase the risk for suicide include chemical dependency and changing life events. Anti-depressant medications with a low anticholinergic and sedative profile are preferred because of age-related physiologic changes. Electroconvulsive therapy is reserved for serious cases.

Castilleja tenuiflora has been used for the treatment of several Central Nervous System (CNS) diseases. BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) has substantial morbidity and incompletely understood neurobiological underpinnings.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate brain chemistry in medication-free individuals with BD.
DESIGN: Two-dimensional proton echo-planar spectroscopic imaging (PEPSI) (32 x 32, 1-cm(3) voxel matrix) acquired axially through the cingulate gyrus was used to quantify regional brain chemistry.

In a previous report it was suggested that intravenous administration of furosemid followed by a comparative caloric test (the furosemid test) could be utilized for detection of endolymphatic hydrops (Kitahara et al., 1973).
