Dermacentor variabilis: resistance to ticks acquired by mast cell-deficient and other strains of mice.

The acquisition of resistance to ticks was monitored in mice of six different strains. Mice were subjected to repeated infestations with Dermacentor variabilis larvae, different skin sites being used for each successive infestation. In the third and fourth infestations, resistance was expressed in three strains of mice (WBB6F1-W/Wv, WBB6F1-+/+, and CFW), as demonstrated by significant reductions in percentages of larvae engorging and in mean weights of fed larvae. Both WBB6F1-W/Wv mice, which are mast cell-sufficient strain attained significantly higher levels of resistance. It is suggested th

Study on tick-borne rickettsiae in eastern Poland. I. Prevalence in Dermacentor reticulatus (Acari: Amblyommidae).

Rickettsia spp. transmitted by ticks are classified mostly in the Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae (SFGR). Numerous species of this group have been identified in Eurasia as emerging pathogens, but still little is known about their occurrence, effects on human health, and co-incidence with other tick-borne pathogens. The aim of the presented study was to determine the prevalence of Rickettsia spp. in adult Dermacentor reticulatus (Acari: Amblyommidae) ticks collected in Lublin province of eastern Poland using the PCR method. The infection rate of D. reticulatus with Rickettsia spp. was 53.0%. Al

Molecular Prevalence of Selected Tick-Borne Pathogens in Dermacentor reticulatus Collected in a Natural Park in Italy.

Dermacentor reticulatus is one of the most important vectors of tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) in Europe causing diseases in animals and humans. A longitudinal study was planned, aimed to detect the molecular prevalence of tick-borne pathogens, i.e., Babesia spp. and the spotted fever group Rickettsiae, and its seasonal variation in D. reticulatus questing ticks to define the temporal infection risk. Ticks were collected monthly over a period of 15 months in a peri-urban park in Lombardy, Italy. DNA extraction and molecular analyses were performed. Statistical analysis was carried out. Out of 488

Human parasitism by the exotic tick Dermacentor variabilis (Parasitiformes: Ixodida) in Brazil: report of an imported case.

In June 2012, a tick was found parasitizing a man in the city of São Paulo, who had recently returned from a visit to Pennsylvania, in the northeast of the United States. The tick was removed and sent to the São Paulo State Department of Health, where it was identified as a male of the species Dermacentor variabilis (Say, 1821), according to the literature and taxonomic keys. The tick was subjected to a PCR test to search for rickettsiae, but the result was negative. The fact that a human entered Brazilian territory unaware that he was parasitized by a hard tick not belonging to the national t

Morphometric analysis - effect of the radiofrequency interface of electromagnetic field on the size of hatched Dermacentor reticulatus larvae.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Electromagnetic radiation interactions with living systems have been one of determining factors in biological evolution. This study investigates the effect of 900 MHz radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetics field (EMF) exposure of eggs on the development of Dermacentor reticulatus larvae. The basic objective was to determine whether the 900 MHz RF-EMF has the potential to influence the size of the body of the hatched larvae of D. reticulatus ticks. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To this aim, eggs from 3 fully engorged females of D. reticulatus were included in the test procedu

Dermacentor reticulatus and Babesia canis in Bavaria (Germany)-A Georeferenced Field Study with Digital Habitat Characterization.

The hard tick Dermacentor reticulatus transmits Babesia canis, the causative agent of canine babesiosis. Both the occurrence and local distribution of D. reticulatus as well as infection rates of questing ticks with B. canis are thus far poorly known in Bavaria, Germany. The objectives of this study were to conduct (1) a georeferenced field study on the occurrence of D. reticulatus with digital habitat characterization and (2) a PCR analysis of D. reticulatus collected in Bavaria for infection with B. canis. Dermacentor reticulatus were collected by flagging at 60 sites specifically selected a

Tissue Localization and Variation of Major Symbionts in Haemaphysalis longicornis, Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides, and Dermacentor silvarum in China.

Ticks are important disease vectors, as they transmit a variety of human and animal pathogens worldwide. Symbionts that coevolved with ticks confer crucial benefits to their host in nutrition metabolism, fecundity, and vector competence. Although over 100 tick species have been identified in China, general information on tick symbiosis is limited. Here, we visualized the tissue distribution of Coxiella sp. and Rickettsia sp. in lab-reared Haemaphysalis longicornis and Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides by fluorescent in situ hybridization. We found that Coxiella sp. colonized exclusively the Malpi

Prevalence of infections and co-infections with 6 pathogens in Dermacentor reticulatus ticks collected in eastern Poland.

Occurrence of co-infections with various pathogens in ixodid ticks creates a risk of increased severity of tick-borne diseases in humans and animals exposed to bite of the ticks carrying multiple pathogens. Accordingly, co-infections in ticks were subject of numerous analyses, but almost exclusively with regard to Ixodes ricinus complex whereas potential tick vectors belonging to other genera were much less studied. Taking into consideration the role of Dermacentor reticulatus in the transmission of various pathogens, we carried out for the first time the comprehensive statistical analysis of

The ability of an oral formulation of afoxolaner to block the transmission of Babesia canis by Dermacentor reticulatus ticks to dogs.

BACKGROUND: Canine babesiosis due to Babesia canis is an endemic disease in many European countries. A vaccine is available in some countries, but it does not prevent the infection and just helps in reducing the gravity of clinical signs. Therefore, the major way to help preventing the disease is by controlling tick infestations on dogs.To assess the preventive efficacy of afoxolaner (NexGard®), a new oral anti- flea and tick product, against Babesia canis infected adult Dermacentor reticulatus in an experimentally controlled study. METHODS: Sixteen healthy mixed breed adult dogs, negative fo

Dermacentor-borne necrosis erythema and lymphadenopathy: clinical and epidemiological features of a new tick-borne disease.

This paper describes the epidemiological and clinical features of a tick-borne disease differing somewhat from other tick-borne diseases found previously in Spain. All patients were bitten by Dermacentor marginatus or a large tick. The clinical features include a crustaceous or necrotic lesion at the site of the tick's attachment, surrounded by an erythema (erythema migrans-like) and painful regional lymphadenopathies. The probable aetiological agent is Rickettsia slovaca. Similar cases have been reported in other European countries.

Prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in adult Dermacentor spp. ticks from nine collection sites in France.

The importance of Dermacentor spp. in the transmission of tick-borne pathogens is not well recognized in Europe. To investigate the role of Dermacentor spp. in the transmission of tick-borne pathogens, questing ticks were collected in 9 sites from southern to northwestern France (Camargue Delta to Eastern Brittany) where Dermacentor spp. exist and tick-borne diseases had occurred previously. Three tick species were collected during the spring and autumn of 2009. Collected ticks (both males and females) included D. marginatus (n=377), D. reticulatus (n=74), and I. ricinus (n=45). All ticks were

Genomic identification of Rickettsia slovaca among spotted fever group rickettsia isolates from Dermacentor marginatus in Armenia.

Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplified genes was used for genomic identification of Armenian isolates of the Spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae with unclear taxonomic position. Analysis was performed by using one genus-specific primer pair derived from R. prowazekii citrate synthase gene and two species-specific primer pairs derived from R. rickettsii genes for 190 K and 120 K antigens following AluI, PstI and RsaI digestion of amplicons. All tested rickettsial SFG Armenian isolates from Dermacentor marginatus were identified as

Mixed infection of Rickettsiella phytoseiuli and Coxiella burnetii in Dermacentor reticulatus female ticks: electron microscope study.

Mixed infection of Rickettsiella phytoseiuli and Coxiella burnetii was investigated in hemolymph and organs of experimentally infected females of Dermacentor reticulatus ticks. Following intracoelomic infection, both agents, with the exception of Gene's organ, multiplied well in the cells of the tick host's organs. Two out of six developmental stages of R. phytoseiuli, i.e., crystal-forming and small dark particles, in dual infection with C. burnetii revealed marked morphological alterations.
