Two male patients with photoallergic contact dermatitis to musk ambrette, 2-methoxy-3,5-dinitro-4-methyl-t-butylbenzene, are reported. Musk ambrette is a synthetic fragrance material commonly used in foods and cosmetics. The clinical distribution of lesions presented by these patients strongly suggested an adverse reaction to light. Over a period of several years no etiology had been determined in these cases despite extensive testing and hospitalization. Photopatch tests to musk ambrette were positive. No other etiology for photosensitivity was found. This report emphasizes that exposure to h

Induction in mice of marked photoallergic contact dermatitis (PCD) to 3,3',4',5-tetrachlorosalicylanilide (TCSA) with UVA (320 to 400 nm) radiation requires pretreatment with cyclophosphamide (CY). Attempts to induce photoallergic contact dermatitis without CY result in only a small degree of sensitivity, accompanied by significant net splenic suppressor cell activity. These suppressor cells are antigen specific, inhibit the induction but not the elicitation of photoallergic contact dermatitis to TCSA, and are T lymphocytes. Exposure of mice to UVB (280 to 320 nm) radiation at a site distant f

The use of veterinary medicines and medicated feed has a potential for the exposure of agricultural workers to pharmaceuticals with phototoxic and photoallergic side-effects. We present a 67-year-old self-employed farmer and pig breeder with a 22-year history of severe persistent photosensitivity following photoallergic contact dermatitis due to direct occupational dermal and airborne contact to chlorpromazine (sedative) and olaquindox (antibiotic and animal growth promoter, AGP). His first dermatitis symptoms appeared at the age of 45 when the pig breeding was intensified. He showed erythemat

There have been no previous reports of photosensitivity following photoallergy to airborne olaquindox in a large group. 15 pig breeders, with photo-distributed dermatitis related to olaquindox dust, were investigated to study the nature, promoting factors, and course of this disease. Minimal erythema doses for UVA and UVB were established before photopatch testing and at intervals thereafter. All patients presented with olaquindox-induced photoallergy. In 14 cases, this was followed by prolonged increased sensitivity to UVA. 7 patients also displayed an increased sensitivity to UVB. 13 farmers

Studies concerning a patient with contact photosensitivity to musk ambrette, a commonly used fragrance, are reported. The patient had a persistent light reaction. The patient's history, clinical appearance, and phototest and photopatch test results are described. The observed patterns of these were identical to those previously noted in patients who had persistent light reactions after exposure to other photosensitizers such as the halogenated salicylanilides. The histopathologic findings in the phototest and photopatch test sites were those of an acute spongiotic dermatitis. No abnormal chang

BACKGROUND: Photoallergic contact dermatitis from topical ketoprofen (KP), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent, is a well-known side effect.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate photo-contact allergic reactions to KP and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), sunscreens, and fragrance components as well as the presence of prolonged photosensitivity related to it.
PATIENTS/METHODS: From June 1993 to June 2007, 42 patients were patch tested and photopatch tested with the ingredients of a KP preparation and other relevant substances. A questionnaire was performed in order to determine th

The topical application of a medicament vehicle consisting of a compress, poultice, plaster, and tape containing a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug or methyl salicylate is prevalent in Japan. The method is effective for conveying ingredients to the muscles via the skin for the relief of muscular pain. However, an ingredient in the occlusive vehicle can cause allergic and photoallergic contact dermatitis. We summarize cases reported over the past decade and discuss the current strategy for diminishing the risk of allergic and photoallergic contact dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Photoallergic contact dermatitis (PACD) is an uncommon condition, and there is a lack of validated criteria for its diagnosis.
OBJECTIVE: To identify a set of relevant criteria to be considered when suspecting a diagnosis of PACD and to assess the reproducibility of these criteria.
METHODS: This was a diagnostic item selection and reliability study performed between July 2012 and October 2012. A panel of seven recognized experts was invited to consecutive rounds of a Delphi survey and to a conclusive face-to-face meeting with the aim of obtaining an agreement on criteria for the

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and photo-ACD are cell-mediated delayed hypersensitivity reactions of the skin caused by a wide range of substances. Topical ketoprofen (KP), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), can induce ACD and photo-ACD. Patients with ACD and/or photo-ACD to KP frequently show concomitant sensitization to other substances. The aim of this study was to identify the substances most frequently associated with sensitization to KP, and to evaluate, by means of computerized conformational analysis, whether this association could be due to cross-allergy. 15 subjects wi

In a 71-year-old male Caucasian patient with persistent eczema on light-exposed skin, photocontact allergy was demonstrated to the UV filter substances 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (UVB), octyl methoxycinnamate (UVB), benzophenone-3 (UVA) and butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane (UVA) present in sunscreen products used by the patient over several years. A significantly reduced UVB sensitivity of 25 mJ/cm2 in this patient (normal minimal erythema dose in our laboratory = 70-130 mJ/cm2) was considered an early indication of a persistent light reaction. Topical anti-inflammatory treatment over 2 weeks to

BACKGROUND: Chronic actinic dermatitis (CAD) has a more complicated pathogenetic basis than others. The clinical grading system and its correlations with the clinical and immunological parameters still remained to be investigated to define the nature of CAD in a more detailed manner.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated correlations of the clinical severity score of CAD (CSS-CAD) with the clinical and immunological parameters.
METHODS: We evaluated 72 patients with CAD and classified them into three groups according to the CSS-CAD. We analysed total IgE level, peripheral blood (PB) eosinophil count,

BACKGROUND: Contact allergy to fragrance mix I (FM I) is over-represented in patients photoallergic to ketoprofen. The prevalence of contact allergy to two components of FM I, cinnamal and cinnamyl alcohol, in ketoprofen-photoallergic patients is higher than in dermatitis patients.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the prevalence of contact allergy to FM I and its individual components in patients with photocontact allergy to ketoprofen, and to compare with a dermatitis and the general population.
METHODS: Data on patch and photopatch tests performed between 2009-2018 were collected. Ketoprofen-photoall

INTRODUCTION: Since 1983, several cases of allergy and photoallergic contact dermatitis to ketoprofen gel have been reported in Italy and Spain. In France, this drug has been available for topic applications since 1989 and no cases of photoallergy have been reported.
CASE REPORT: We observed two cases of photoallergic contact dermatitis to ketoprofen (Profenid gel, Ketum gel). Imputability was suggested by clinical history and proven by patch-tests showing evidence of crossed photoallergy with fenofibrate in both cases. Photoallergic dermatitis to oxybenzone was associated in one case.

Photoallergic dermatitis is caused by a photosensitizing substance plus sunlight exposure in a sensitized person. If the photosensitizer is delivered internally, it is called a photoallergic drug reaction. Celecoxib is a new generation non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and sulfonamide derivative. We report a photoallergic drug eruption associated with the introduction of celecoxib. To our knowledge, this is the first report of photoallergic drug reaction associated with celecoxib.

The differentiation of photoallergic contact dermatitis by 3,3', 4', 5-tetra-chlorosalicylanilide from phototoxic contact dermatitis by 8-MOP in guinea pigs was studied by skin window technique. Based upon the results, it may be concluded that the photoallergic reaction can be differentiated from phototoxic reaction by the appearing pattern of basophilic leukocytes.

BACKGROUND: Photoallergic contact dermatitis is one of the important parts of photodermatoses. The investigation of choice is photopatch testing. However, reports with photopatch test results from Asian countries are scarce. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of positive photopatch test reactions and to ascertain the common photoallergens among Thai patients during 1998-2018.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 339 patients who were clinically suspected of having photoallergic contact dermatitis and had undergone photopatch testing.
RESULTS: A total o

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of possible photoallergic contact dermatitis in at-risk populations is often not undertaken, and an agreed methodology for investigation is uncommonly used.
OBJECTIVES: We conducted a retrospective multicentre study to determine the prevalence of photoallergic contact dermatitis in Italy.
METHODS: A total of 1082 patients with histories and clinical features suggestive of photoallergic contact dermatitis were evaluated. All the patients had undergone photopatch testing with allergens proposed for Italy as well as other substances suggested by each patient's personal hi

BACKGROUND: Photopatch tests are used to diagnose photoallergic contact dermatitis and identify the causal agents. The frequencies of positive results and associated allergens vary by country; therefore, it is necessary to know the information specific to each country.
OBJECTIVE: To establish the frequency of positive photopatch test results, and their relevance, in patients with suspected photoallergic contact dermatitis in a national dermatology centre located in Bogota, Colombia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred patients investigated for possible photoallergic contact dermatitis were en

The number of adverse responses considered to be drug photosensitivity reactions account for only an exceedingly small percentage of the total undesirable effects from environmental chemicals. However, the rising incidence of and severe disability resulting from drug photosensitivity, especially when the photosensitivity is of the persistent light reactor type, indicate that increased photobiologic research and development efforts are required. Predictive tests are an obvious approach to minimize or eliminate those chemicals showing a risk-benefit ratio that is undesirable to society in genera
