Evidence for photochemical production of reactive oxygen species in desert soils.

The combination of intense solar radiation and soil desiccation creates a short circuit in the biogeochemical carbon cycle, where soils release significant amounts of CO2 and reactive nitrogen oxides by abiotic oxidation. Here we show that desert soils accumulate metal superoxides and peroxides at higher levels than non-desert soils. We also show the photogeneration of equimolar superoxide and hydroxyl radical in desiccated and aqueous soils, respectively, by a photo-induced electron transfer mechanism supported by their mineralogical composition. Reactivity of desert soils is further supporte

[Study on estimation of deserts soil total phosphorus content from thermal-infrared emissivity].

Soil phosphorus provides nutrient elements for plants, is one of important parameters for evaluating soil quality. The traditional method for soil total phosphorus content (STPC) measurement is not effective and time-consuming. However, remote sensing (RS) enables us to determine STPC in a fast and efficient way. Studies on the estimation of STPC in near-infrared spectroscopy have been developed by scholars, but model accuracy is still poor due to the low absorption coefficient and unclear absorption peak of soil phosphorus in near-infrared. In order to solve the deficiency which thermal-infra

Formation of Sodium Chloride on the Surface of Sulfate-Rich Gobi Desert Salt in Response to Water Adsorption.

Dust storms in arid regions transport desert salts and dust, affecting geochemical processes, atmospheric chemistry, climate, and human health. This study examines how the gas-salt interface composition of desert salt changes with varying relative humidity (RH), using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Ion chromatography analysis of desert salt indicates it is predominantly composed of sulfate, sodium, and magnesium ions, with traces of calcium, chloride, nitrate, a

Integrating camel production systems into circular bioeconomy frameworks in arid and semi-arid regions: a narrative review of feed resources, waste valorization, and sustainability.

Camels, the one-humped Camelus dromedarius and the two-humped Camelus bactrianus, are uniquely adapted livestock species to the arid and semi-arid regions. Their distinctive behavioral and physiological adaptations enable them to maintain productivity in these challenging ecosystems, characterized by prolonged heat stress, limited feed resources, and water scarcity. Despite these advantages and their vital role in rural livelihoods, food security and the resilience of dryland ecosystems, the potential contribution of camel production systems to the circular bioeconomy has not been comprehensiv

A Likely Plague Epizootic Involving Wild Lagomorphs in the Mojave Desert of California: Public Health and Ecological Implications.

Plague is a disease that poses serious threats to public and ecosystem health. Its causative bacterium, Yersinia pestis, was transported to North America around 1900, where it quickly became established in native rodent populations and spread throughout the western half of the United States by the mid-1900s. Many questions remain about plague circulation in the numerous rodent species involved, but its ecology in rabbits and other lagomorphs is even less understood. We describe a plague epizootic that appeared to involve both desert cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus audubonii) and black-tailed ja

Solar radiation alters heat balance and thermoregulation in a flying desert bee.

Solar radiation is an important environmental variable for terrestrial animals, but its impact on the heat balance of large flying insects has been poorly studied. Desert bees are critical to ecosystem function through their pollination services, and are exposed to high radiant loads. We assessed the role of solar radiation in the heat balance of flying desert Centris pallida bees by calculating heat budgets for individuals in a respirometer in shaded versus sunny conditions from 16 to 37°C air temperatures, comparing the large and small male morphs and females. Solar radiation was responsible

Monitoring dynamics of biocrust rehabilitation in acid-saturated desert soils.

The study explores the aftermath of a wastewater reservoir failure in a phosphate fertilizer industry, resulting in the release of acidic water containing phosphorus and sulfate compounds into the Ashalim stream's Nature Reserve in the Judean desert, which affected the soil surface biological crusts (biocrusts) layer. The study aims to examine contamination effects on biocrusts over 3 years at two research sites along the stream, compare effects between contaminated sites, assess rehabilitation treatments, and examine their impact on soil characteristics. Hypotheses suggest significant damage

Nearly 30a shrub introduction in desert steppes has led to an increase in saprotrophic fungi, accelerating the degradation of carbon compounds and nitrate reduction.

Clarifying how soil microbial communities respond to shrub introduction after overgrazing in desert steppe and their potential functions is crucial for understanding the biogeochemical processes involved in vegetation transformation and sustainability of desert grasslands. However, the dynamics of microbial communities remain poorly understood. We selected enclosed grasslands (20a), overgrazed grasslands, and shrublands (6a, 15a, and 25a) to explore how shrubs introduced influence soil microbial structure and functional groups over the long term after desert grassland degradation. The results

Genomic Analysis of Aedes aegypti in the Northern Chihuahuan Desert of Texas and Mexico.

Background: Aedes aegypti, is the primary vector of dengue, Chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever viruses. Both natural and human-impacted landscapes have selective pressures on Ae. aegypti, resulting in strong genomic structure even within close geographical distances. Materials and Methods: We assess the genetic structure of this medically important mosquito species at the northern leading edge of their distribution in Southwestern USA. Ae. aegypti were collected during 2017 in the urban communities of El Paso and Sparks, Texas (USA) and in the city of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Results: Thousands

Constraints on the Metabolic Activity of Microorganisms in Atacama Surface Soils Inferred from Refractory Biomarkers: Implications for Martian Habitability and Biomarker Detection.

Dryness is one of the main environmental challenges to microbial survival. Understanding the threshold of microbial tolerance to extreme dryness is relevant to better constrain the environmental limits of life on Earth and critically evaluate long-term habitability models of Mars. Biomolecular proxies for microbial adaptation and growth were measured in Mars-like hyperarid surface soils in the Atacama Desert that experience only a few millimeters of precipitation per decade, and in biologically active soils a few hundred kilometers away that experience two- to fivefold more precipitation. Regulation of Heat Exchange across the Hornbill Beak: Functional Similarities with Toucans?

Beaks are increasingly recognised as important contributors to avian thermoregulation. Several studies supporting Allen's rule demonstrate how beak size is under strong selection related to latitude and/or air temperature (Ta). Moreover, active regulation of heat transfer from the beak has recently been demonstrated in a toucan (Ramphastos toco, Ramphastidae), with the large beak acting as an important contributor to heat dissipation. We hypothesised that hornbills (Bucerotidae) likewise use their large beaks for non-evaporative heat dissipation, and used thermal imaging to quantify heat excha

The Nasca and Palpa geoglyphs: geophysical and geochemical data.

The Nasca geoglyphs in the stone desert in southern Peru are part of our world cultural heritage. These remarkable drawings have roused the interest of scientists from different disciplines. Here we report the results of integrated geophysical, petrophysical, mineralogical, and geochemical investigations of the geoglyphs at six test sites in the stone desert around Nasca and Palpa. The geomagnetic measurements revealed clear indications of subsurface structures that differ from the visible surface geoglyphs. The high-resolution geoelectrical images show unexpected resistivity anomalies underne

Ecophysiology and nutritional niche of the bilby (Macrotis lagotis), an omnivorous marsupial from inland Australia: a review.

The bilby (Macrotis lagotis) is a small omnivorous marsupial that was once widespread but is now restricted to the most arid margins of its former range. It feeds on a mixture of invertebrates (mainly ants and termites) and plant material (mainly seeds and bulbs), most of which is below ground. Measurements of the energy and water requirements of free-living bilbies and of the maintenance nitrogen requirements of captive animals provided the basis for an explanation for its continued survival in the Australian arid zone. Measurements of the mean retention times of inert markers for the solute

Susceptibility status of two species of Japanese encephalitis vectors to insecticides in the Thar desert, district Bikaner (Rajasthan).

Susceptibility tests were conducted on the adults of two species of Japanese encephalitis vectors viz., Culex pseudovishnui and C. tritaeniorhynchus against diagnostic doses of DDT, dieldrin, malathion, fenitrothion, propoxur and permethrin at different exposure duration. C. pseudovishnui was found susceptible to permethrin and resistant to dieldrin and propoxur while C. tritaeniorhynchus was found susceptible to permethrin and resistant to DDT, dieldrin, fenitrothion and propoxur. A verification, however, was required with other insecticides for both the species.

Epidemiology of heat illnesses during the Makkah Pilgrimages in Saudi Arabia.

A review of the literature shows that our knowledge of the epidemiology of heat illnesses on a global and regional level is still lacking. Until now most of the information has come from the experience of European armies in hot environments. Recently increased interest has been shown following the epidemics of heat illnesses affecting civil communities in the United States. Of great importance and unique for the study of heat illness is the start of the hot cycle of the Makkah Pilgrimage which will continue for the next 15-16 years. Approximately two million people, the majority of whom are at

Multiple Global Change Stressors Boost Soil Greenhouse Gas Emissions Worldwide.

Soil carbon greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are integral to climate security worldwide. Global change is known to impact soil GHG emissions; yet, the contribution of an increasing number of global change factors (GCFs) to the rates of carbon GHG emissions remains virtually unknown, challenging our capacity to forecast the trajectory of climate change. Here, we synthesize 1803 observations on soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes across 21 types of GCFs spanning a wide range of ecosystems (i.e., forests, grasslands, farmland, wetlands, tundras, and deserts) and found that an increasing number of GCFs will res
