Effects of aspirin treatment on diabetic retinopathy. ETDRS report number 8. Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study Research Group.

Aspirin treatment did not alter the course of diabetic retinopathy in patients enrolled in the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS). In this randomized clinical trial supported by the National Eye Institute, 3711 patients with mild-to-severe nonproliferative or early proliferative diabetic retinopathy were assigned randomly to either aspirin (650 mg per day) or placebo. Aspirin did not prevent the development of high-risk proliferative retinopathy and did not reduce the risk of visual loss, nor did it increase the risk of vitreous hemorrhage. This was true both for eyes assigned

Identification of common genes associated with diabetic nephropathy and diabetic retinopathy.

BACKGROUND: There is a common basis of the diabetic nephropathy (DN) and diabetic retinopathy (DR), but the common genes of DN and DR were unclear. METHODS: In this study, DN-related and DR-related transcriptome data GSE185011 was extracted. Firstly, the differentially expressed genes 1 (DEGs1) between DN and normal control (HC) samples, and DEGs2 between DR and HC samples were screened by "limma". Then, the common genes of DN and DR were obtained by intersecting the DEGs1 and DEGs2. Next, the enrichment analyses of DEGs1 and DEGs2 were conducted by "ClusterProfiler", and the enrichment analy

Gene Therapy in Diabetic Retinopathy and Diabetic Macular Edema: An Update.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness worldwide. It is characterized by a spectrum of disease that spans mild non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) all the way to neovascular glaucoma and tractional retinal detachment secondary to proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Most eyes with DR remain asymptomatic unless vision-threatening complications, such as diabetic macular edema (DME) and/or PDR, develop. Current treatment options include laser photocoagulation and/or anti-VEGF intravitreal injections. Patients under treatment with anti-VEGF a

Early visual cortical structural changes in diabetic patients without diabetic retinopathy.

BACKGROUND: It is known that diabetic patients have changes in cortical morphometry as compared to controls, but it remains to be clarified whether the visual cortex is a disease target, even when diabetes complications such as retinopathy are absent. Therefore, we compared type 2 diabetes patients without diabetic retinopathy with control subjects using magnetic resonance imaging to assess visual cortical changes when retinal damage is not yet present. METHODS: We performed T1-weighted imaging in 24 type 2 diabetes patients without diabetic retinopathy and 27 age- and gender-matched controls

[A study of the relationship between diabetic neuropathy and diabetic retinopathy].

To evaluate the relationship between diabetic neuropathy and retinopathy, we examined autonomic nervous function, postural hypotension, nerve conduction velocity and coefficient of variation of R-R intervals. Forty-five non-insulin dependent diabetic cases were classified as no diabetic retinopathy (group A), simple diabetic retinopathy (group B) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (group C). These groups did not differ in age or gender. The rate of postural hypotension (depression of systolic blood pressure over 30 mmHg) was 0% in group A, 7% in group Bs and 53% in group C. Nerve conductio

Regulation of Mitochondrial Biogenesis in Diabetic Retinopathy.

Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a major role in diabetic retinopathy development and in its resistance to halt after the reversal of hyperglycemia (metabolic memory). Diabetes also upregulates many long noncoding RNAs, RNAs with >200 nucleotides with no reading frame, and several of them resist reversal after hyperglycemia cessation. Our aim was to investigate the role of LncRNA HOTAIR, a master regulator of chromatin dynamics, in mitochondrial biogenesis in diabetic retinopathy and in metabolic memory. Using retinal endothelial cells and Müller cells, incubated in high glucose (20 mM D-glucos

MicroRNAs: A Social Network in Diabetic Retinopathy.

In recent years, the role of non-coding RNAs in human physiology and pathology has emerged as an essential avenue of investigation. Among others, studies identifying the biological role of microRNAs (miRNAs) have paved the way for future inquiries on the importance and biological significance of non-coding RNAs. In this review, we provide an overview of miRNAs' biology and their contribution to the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy (DR). This complication of diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults, affecting more than 4 million people in the US alone and over 103 million people

Diabetic Retinopathy Detection: AI Models and Approaches.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a major cause of vision loss worldwide, results from chronic diabetes damage to retinal blood vessels. Vision loss can be prevented if DR is detected early, but traditional retinal screening by eye care takes time and expertise. Recent advances in AI technology, including classical machine learning and deep learning, can be more accurate in DR detection. This article provides a comprehensive review of current AI models and approaches of DR screening. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and EBSCOhost using the keywords: dia

Visual impairment and blindness in diabetic retinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) and a leading cause of preventable visual impairment (VI) and blindness worldwide. The rising global prevalence of DM, particularly in low- and middle-income regions such as the Middle East, necessitates the collection of localized data on DR-related VI. Despite growing public health concerns, limited research has been conducted in the Gulf region, including Oman. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and severity of VI associated with DR and identify its key risk factors among patients wi

RAAS in diabetic retinopathy: mechanisms and therapies.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a complication of diabetes with a complex pathophysiology and multiple factors involved. Recently, it has been found that the upregulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) leads to overexpression of angiotensin II (Ang II), which induces oxidative stress, inflammation, and angiogenesis in the retina. Therefore, RAAS may be a promising therapeutic target in DR. Notably, RAAS inhibitors are often used in the treatment of hypertension. Still, the potential role and mechanism of DR must be further studied. In this review, we discuss and summarize the

The retina-brain axis and diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major contributor to permanent vision loss and blindness. Changes in retinal neurons, glia, and microvasculature have been the focus of intensive study in the quest to better understand DR. However, the impact of diabetes on the rest of the visual system has received less attention. There are reports of associations of changes in the visual system with preclinical and clinical manifestations of diabetes. Simultaneous investigation of the retina and the brain may shed light on the mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration in diabetics. Additionally, investigating th
