The Behind-the-Knee test: an efficient model for evaluating mechanical and chemical irritation.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The 'Behind-the-Knee' method (BTK test), using the popliteal fossa as a test site, evaluates both the inherent chemical irritation, and the potential for mechanical irritation of substrates and products. This approach eliminates some of the difficulties of in-use clinical test systems while still providing reliable results. In this publication, examples of the results of BTK tests on several materials are presented with direct comparisons, where possible, with results of in-use clinical testing conducted on the same materials. METHODS: In in-use clinical tests, volunteer p

Knowledge of mothers on diaper dermatitis management and associated factors in Ethiopia.

Diaper dermatitis is an inflammatory reactions of the skin under a diaper due to prolonged skin contact with irritants (urine and faeces), seborrhoea, allergic reaction, fungal (candida), and bacterial infections. It is more common in children aged 1-24 months, with the majority of instances occurring in newborns younger than one year. Over half of newborns suffer from the case at least once throughout their diaper-wearing phase. In low- and middle-income countries like Ethiopia, there is a lack of published data regarding the degree of parental knowledge of diaper dermatitis, its management,

A Natural Cream-to-Powder Formulation Developed for the Prevention of Diaper Dermatitis in Diaper-Wearing Infants and Children: Barrier Property and In-Use Tolerance Studies.

INTRODUCTION: Diaper dermatitis is a common condition that develops in the diaper area due to factors such as elevated moisture, increased skin surface pH, and exposure to irritants from urine and feces. These factors suggest interventions to prevent or treat diaper dermatitis such as exposing the skin to air, frequent diaper changes, and thorough cleansing of the diaper area. Barrier creams and powders also have a role in preventing and treating diaper dermatitis. We developed a cream-to-powder product with a formula based on corn starch and other natural ingredients for use in the diaper are

Risk factors for community-acquired pressure injuries: Findings from a large-scale Asian case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Pressure injuries, also known as pressure ulcers, remain a major global health problem, causing significant clinical, economic, and psychosocial burdens despite advances in prevention and treatment. While most research has focused on hospital-acquired cases, community-acquired pressure injuries are increasingly recognised, with prevalence in some settings exceeding hospital-acquired rates. Evidence from Asian healthcare systems is limited, yet region-specific factors such as ageing populations, caregiver dependence, and variable access to wound care highlight the urgent need for co

Depression of being "down to my last diaper": A qualitative descriptive study of associations between diaper insecurity and maternal health.

BACKGROUND: Diaper insecurity, unmet need for infant/child diapers, is a form of material deprivation associated with worse maternal mental health, including higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. OBJECTIVES: To examine retrospective reports of mothers' experiences of diaper insecurity and coping strategies as they related to maternal physical and mental health, health behaviors, and social interaction. DESIGN: This study used semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 70 mothers who lacked enough diapers. A thematic analysis using abductive coding was conducted to identify related

Equipment and modifications that enabled infant child-care by a mother with C8 tetraplegia: a case report.

PURPOSE: In the past, rehabilitative effort after spinal cord injury has focused on maximizing physical functioning related to activities of daily living and self-care, with less emphasis on issues such as care-giving. The number of women becoming pregnant and rearing children after spinal cord injury has increased in recent years, but descriptions of equipment and modifications used in child-care are scarce. Equipment and techniques that enable physical independence in providing infant-care by persons with low-level tetraplegia has not previously been described. METHODS: This case report des

Prevalence, risk factors, psychological effects of children and adolescents with lower urinary tract symptoms: a large population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are clinically frequent and seriously affect the psychological and mental health of children and adolescents. However, most studies on LUTS and its influence on the psychological behavior and mental health have focused on adults. This study aimed to investigate LUTS prevalence and associated factors in children and adolescents and explore its impact on psychological behavior. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From October 2019 to November 2021, an epidemiological LUTS survey was carried out on 6,077 children aged 6-15 years old in 12 primary and secondary

Managing incontinence using technology, devices, and products: directions for research.

BACKGROUND: Millions of Americans with incontinence use some type of device or product to manage or collect urine or feces. However, research on their clinical uses, problems requiring nursing care, and patient satisfaction is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To review the various products and devices used for incontinence, identify directions for research and development on technology, and outline the ways nurses can influence and participate in those investigations. METHODS: Existing literature on incontinence technology, devices, and products was analyzed to generate a plan for future research. RESU

Understanding bladder management on a palliative care unit: a grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: Research regarding factors associated with nursing-initiated changes to bladder management at end-of-life is sparse. OBJECTIVES: To explore the process of Palliative Care Unit (PCU) nurses' approach to bladder management changes. METHODS: Nursing staff from one PCU in London, Canada were interviewed regarding bladder management care practices. A constructivist grounded theory was generated. RESULTS: Four interconnected themes emerged: humanity (compassionate support of patients); journey (making the most of a finite timeline); health condition (illness, functional decline); and

Baby-wipe dermatitis: preservative-induced hand eczema in parents and persons using moist towelettes.

BACKGROUND: Hand eczema can have complex causative or aggravating influences, and the pattern, history, and patch test data are helpful in identifying sources and antigen substitution. OBJECTIVE: We studied our patients with hand eczema associated with exposure to baby wipes for pattern and sensitivities. METHODS: Patient records over a 10-year period containing key words were reviewed for relevance of exposure, patch test data, and outcome. RESULTS: A total of 6 women and 3 men with hand eczema were found to be allergic to (preservatives found in) different brands of moist towelettes used

Guaiazulene: a new treatment option for recalcitrant diaper dermatitis in NICU patients.

AIM: Based on a maternal observation, we aimed to evaluate the treatment effectiveness of guaiazulene (GA) containing local pomade in the high-risk neonates with recalcitrant diaper dermatitis (RDD). METHODS: We included 30 NICU patients of RDD, with level II-III aged between 22 and 67 days. Study group patients (n = 20) were treated with GA containing local pomade (0.05 g/100 g). Control group consisted of patients who had extended antifungal treatment. A visual scale was used to assess the response to treatment at the end of a week. Scoring was done at the beginning of the treatment, on the
