Is the function of the core muscles affected during pregnancy?

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The aim of our study is to examine the changes in core muscle functions during pregnancy. METHODS: Our study was carried out in 67 primigravida pregnant women. Superficial electromyography (EMG) and non-invasive 2D/3D ultrasonography (USG) were used to evaluate core muscle (diaphragm, transversus abdominus [TA], internal oblique [IO]-external oblique [EO] muscles, pelvic floor muscles, multifidus) function during pregnancy. Pelvic floor muscle strength was also measured by a digital palpation method (PERFECT system). USG was used to measure expected fetal weight a

Abdominal wall sonography: a pictorial review.

The anterior abdominal wall, which is composed of three layers (skin and adipose tissues; the myofascial layer; and the deep layer, consisting of the transversalis fascia, preperitoneal fat, and the parietal peritoneum), has many functions: containment, support and protection for the intraperitoneal contents, and involvement in movement and breathing. While hernias are often encountered and well reviewed in the literature, the other abdominal wall pathologies are less commonly described. In this pictorial review, we briefly discuss the normal anatomy of the anterior abdominal wall, describe th

[Rectus diastasis surgery : indications and new approaches].

Rectus abdominis diastasis is defined as a widening of the linea alba exceeding 2 cm. The European Hernia Society (EHS) provides a classification to guide its management. This article details the abdominal wall surgeon's perspective, particularly for symptomatic patients without major skin excess. Following a well-conducted physiotherapy, the rise of minimally invasive extraperitoneal techniques, particularly robotic approaches, offers an alternative to abdominoplasty in selected cases. By avoiding large subcutaneous dissections, these posterior approaches drastically reduce morbidity. The goa

Principles of rectus diastasis classification and treatment.

INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE: In the last 15 years, rectus diastasis has become a relevant topic for general surgeons. There have been published different classification systems and more than 45 surgical procedures, open or laparoendoscopic, even robotic, for treatment. This article pretends to summarize the different classification system and give some insight about what surgical technique could be recommended in each case. METHODS: A literature search of publications on classification systems of rectus diastasis and its treatment was performed in three databases (PubMed, EMBASE and WOS) without

Functional Improvement Following Diastasis Rectus Abdominus Repair in an Active Duty Navy Female.

Return to physical activity following childbirth can be a difficult process complicated by structural changes during pregnancy. A common problem is the development of a diastasis of the rectus abdominus (DRA), defined as a horizontal separation of the abdominus muscles at the linea alba. Recent data indicate that the greater the distance of separation of the muscle, the worse the functional ability. We describe a 24-year-old active duty U.S. Navy female G1P2 with a diagnosis of DRA. At 2 months postpartum, she was referred to physical therapy because of back pain and inability to meet baseline

Exercises, Tubigrip and taping: can they reduce rectus abdominis diastasis measured three weeks post-partum?

BACKGROUND: Rectus abdominis diastasis is regarded as a risk factor for abdominal muscle dysfunction and reduced quality of life postpartum. It is thought that specific exercises and additional physical support might reduce the diastasis, with a need to establish efficacy in doing so. OBJECTIVES: Determine the effect of four abdominal exercises as well as Tubigrip or taping in reducing rectus abdominis diastases three weeks postpartum. DESIGN: Cross-sectional repeated measures comparison. METHODS: 32 women undertook a single session of ultrasound imaging. Ultrasound measurements of inter-re

Rectus Diastasis With Midline Hernias: Abdominal Wall Reconstruction With Autologous Tissue.

Surgical intervention is recommended for patients presenting with ventral hernias accompanied by rectus diastasis. The priority goals of reconstruction are to restore normal abdominal wall anatomy and to minimize the risk of recurrence. Despite the availability of various surgical techniques, recurrence remains a significant concern for surgeons. This report presents the authors' experience with abdominal wall reconstruction using autologous tissue. This surgical technique is indicated for patients presenting with a midline hernia with severe rectus diastasis (defined by an inter-rectus distan

Reply to the Letter Regarding "Impact of Abdominoplasty with Diastasis Recti Correction on Female Sexual Function".

In response to Verma et al. we acknowledge the limitations of our study, including the absence of a control group and the modest sample size, both influenced by ethical and logistical constraints. Despite these factors, improvements in FSFI scores were statistically significant. We concur that larger multicenter studies with standardized measures are needed, and we appreciate this constructive exchange fostering further research on female sexual health after abdominoplasty.Level of Evidence V This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. Diastasis Recti Abdominis Rehabilitation in the Postpartum Period: A Scoping Review of Current Clinical Practice.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Despite exercise being the standard approach to diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) rehabilitation, there is no consensus on the most effective exercise routine and adjunct modalities for reducing DRA and improving functional parameters. The present study is aimed at investigating evidence for DRA rehabilitation in postpartum women, as well as knowledge gaps and areas for future research. METHODS: For this scoping review a systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, AMED, CINAHL, Embase, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and PEDro up to November 2022. Selection criteria included

Prospective observational study of abdominal wall reconstruction with THT technique in primary midline defects with diastasis recti: clinical and functional outcomes in 110 consecutive patients.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical treatment of diastasis recti is still a matter of debate. Open approaches such as abdominoplasty, which offer the possibility to combine reparation of the diastasis with abdominal cosmetic surgery, are challenged by the emerging less-invasive laparoscopic or robotic techniques that offer shorter recovery for patients. However, evidence in favour of one of the two approaches concerning both short- and long-term complications and functional results is still lacking. In this paper, we analysed clinical and functional results of a new endo-laparoscopic technique for midline

Giant ventral hernia-relationship between abdominal wall muscle strength and hernia area.

BACKGROUND: Symptoms arising from giant ventral hernia have been considered to be related to weakening of the abdominal muscles. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the area of the abdominal wall defect and abdominal wall muscle strength measured by the validated BioDex system together with a back/abdominal unit. METHODS: Fifty-two patients with giant ventral hernia (>10 cm wide) underwent CT scan, clinical measurement of hernia size and BioDex measurement of muscle strength prior to surgery. The areas of the hernia derived from CT scan and from clinical measurem

Mini-invasive surgery for diastasis recti: an overview on different approaches.

Diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) is an acquired condition defined by a widening of the linea alba exceeding 2 cm and the subsequent separation between the two medial margins of the rectus muscles, accompanied by a laxity of the ventral abdominal muscles, and often by ventral midline hernias. It is a quite common problem in women after pregnancy. In addition to the aesthetic implications resulting from the swelling of the anterior abdominal wall in the case of increased pressure within the abdominal cavity, DRA leads to several physical functional disorders, including muscle weakness, prolapses

Diastasis recti abdominis in HIV-infected men with lipodystrophy.

Diastasis recti abdominis is a condition in which the rectus abdominus muscle separates in the midline at the linea alba producing a ventral herniation. We have observed the occurrence of this condition in HIV-infected men attending an osteopathic clinic. Two such cases are described in detail. An apparent association with HIV-associated lipodystrophy syndrome and implications for management are explored.

Midabdominoplasty.

Midabdominoplasty is a simple procedure requiring only local anesthetic. It is suitable for lesser abdominal deformities, such as striae, wrinkling, and relaxation, but it is not adequate for resection of lower abdominal lipodystrophy. However, it may be used for correcting diastasis of the rectus muscle or an umbilical hernia. The transverse scar line is minimal, similar to the mark at the waist left by a half-slip or panty.
