A review of infectious interstitial and bronchointerstitial pneumonia in cattle with an algorithm for the detection of infectious and non-infectious causes.

Bovine interstitial and bronchointerstitial pneumonias are common and important diseases of cattle, caused by several infectious and non-infectious causes. Here, we review the roles of bovine respiratory syncytial virus, bovine parainfluenza virus 3, bovine alphaherpesvirus 1, bovine viral diarrhea virus, bovine coronavirus, influenza D virus, malignant catarrhal fever virus, and bovine adenovirus in interstitial or bronchointerstitial pneumonia. We describe the possible causes, pathogenesis, and diagnosis of bacterial septicemias that result in interstitial pneumonia, including E. coli, Salmo

Divergent age-related changes in parasite infection occur independently of behaviour and demography in a wild ungulate.

As animals age, they exhibit a suite of phenotypic changes, often including reductions in movement and social behaviour ('behavioural ageing'). By altering an individual's exposure to parasites, behavioural ageing may influence infection status trajectories over the lifespan. However, these processes could be confounded by age-related changes in other phenotypic traits, or by selective disappearance of certain individuals owing to parasite-induced mortality. Here, we uncover contrasting age-related patterns of infection across three helminth parasites in wild adult female red deer (Cervus elap

Efficacy of ivermectin in a topical formulation against induced gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematode infections, and naturally acquired grubs and lice in cattle.

Efficacy of ivermectin in a topical formulation was evaluated in cattle against adult gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematode infections (experiment 1, n = 24), the 2nd- and 3rd-stage larvae of Hypoderma spp (experiment 2, n = 12), and the biting louse Damalinia bovis (experiment 3, n = 12). Nematode infections were induced and grubs and lice were naturally acquired. Treatments consisted of a single dose of ivermectin in a topical formulation of 200, 500, or 1,000 micrograms/kg of body weight in experiment 1 or 500 micrograms/kg in experiments 2 and 3. At 1,000 micrograms/kg, ivermectin was 10

Declining body weight of moose calves related to parasite and disease burden.

Body weights of hunted moose calves have markedly declined in southwestern Finland during this millennium, but the cause of this phenomenon is yet unknown. We studied whether the decline is associated with prevalence of parasites and diseases. For this purpose, we collected tissue samples (lung, heart, liver and faeces) from moose calves hunted in autumn in study area with declining calf body weights (N = 45) and in control area with no decline in body weight (N = 19). We compared the findings between regions and studied the relationship between carcass weight and parasitological and pathologi

Parasitic pneumonia in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in Cornwall, Great Britain, caused by Varestrongylus capreoli (Protostrongylidae).

BACKGROUND: Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) became extinct over large areas of Britain during the post mediaeval period but following re-introductions from Europe during the 1800s and early 1900s the population started to recover and in recent decades there has been a spectacular increase. Many roe deer are shot in Britain each year but despite this there is little published information on the diseases and causes of mortality of roe deer in Great Britain. CASE PRESENTATION: The lungs of two hunter-shot roe deer in Cornwall showed multiple, raised, nodular lesions associated with numerous proto

Gastrointestinal parasites of working donkeys of Ethiopia.

The general prevalence and population composition of gastrointestinal and pulmonary helminths of working donkeys were studied. For the purpose 2935 working donkeys were coprologically examined for nematode and cestode, and 215 donkeys for trematode infections. Seven donkeys that died due to various health problems or were euthanased on a welfare ground were necropsied and the parasites were recovered and identified to the species level. The study was conducted during the periods 1996-1999.Coprological examination revealed 99% strongyle, 80% Fasciola, 51% Parascaris, 30% Gastrodiscus, 11% Stron

Survey of hepatic and pulmonary helminths of wild cervids in Alberta, Canada.

During the 1988 hunting season, livers and lungs from 263 mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus), 198 moose (Alces alces), 147 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), and 94 wapiti (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) from Alberta (Canada) were collected for parasitological examination. Most of the samples (89%) were submitted by big game hunters throughout the province. Giant liver fluke (Fascioloides magna) was found in 9% of 22 yearling and 29% of 65 adult wapiti; 4% of 161 adult moose; and 2% of 97 adult white-tailed deer. The intensity of infection generally was low; however, one wapiti had ove

Nematocidal efficacy of eprinomectin, delivered topically, in naturally infected cattle.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the nematocidal efficacy of eprinomectin in naturally infected cattle. ANIMALS: 62 (31 eprinomectin-treated and 31 control) beef mixed-breed or Holstein cattle, either 6 to 11 or 48 to 96 months old. PROCEDURE: Cattle were housed 21 to 27 days before treatment to allow parasites to reach maturity. Animals were grouped by sex, ranked by weight, and randomly assigned to treatment group. Fecal flotation was done to identify cattle with intestinal nematode infections. Treatment groups were: 1--eprinomectin topical vehicle (1 ml/10 kg) and 2--eprinomectin topical solution (1

10-year parasitological examination results (2003 to 2012) of faecal samples from horses, ruminants, pigs, dogs, cats, rabbits and hedgehogs.

The results of coproscopical examinations in domestic animals and hedgehogs carried out as routine diagnostics in the years 2003 to 2012 at the Institute for Parasitology, University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Germany, are presented. Of 3475 horse faecal samples, 30.1% contained stages of strongyles and 1.3% eggs of Strongyloides westeri and Parascaris equorum, respectively. The most frequently observed parasite stages in 1416 cattle faecal samples were Eimeria oocysts (21.3%) and strongyle eggs or larvae (15.9%). Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae and Fasciola hepatica eggs were identified i

Pathophysiology of nematodiasis in cattle.

Recent detailed studies of the physiologic changes occurring in cattle infected with some of the common gastrointestinal nematodes have shown that the weight loss and reduced carcass values resulting from these infections are a consequence of major alterations in host metabolism. Dramatic changes in protein metabolism were consistently found to involve decreased muscle synthesis and increased urinary nitrogen excretion. Because of the well-recognized loss of plasma proteins into the gut lumen and cellular damage at the mucosa occurring during nematode infections of the abomasum and duodenum, i

Studies on fenbendazole for treating lung and intestinal parasites in horses and donkeys.

The efficacy of orally administered fenbendazole on lung and intestinal parasitism in equids was investigated in a mixed herd of pony mares, jenny donkeys and foals. A single dose of 7.5 mg fenbendazole/kg body weight effectively removed intestinal parasites from the ponies, donkeys and foals, but higher doses and repeated treatments failed to eliminate lungworm infections in donkeys. The finding of eosinophilia proved useful in detecting lungworm infections in donkeys.

Seasonal assessment of welfare and Endoparasitic infections in Balkan donkeys.

BACKGROUND: In Serbia, donkey breeding is meeting a growing trend, primarily for milk production. However, the welfare status of donkeys kept under such farming systems remains inadequately evaluated, with limited data available on their health, behavior, and overall management conditions. AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate welfare indicators in donkeys, determine the prevalence of endoparasitic infections, and assess their potential effects on the animals' welfare status. METHODS: The study was conducted during spring and autumn season, on a sample of 160 Balkan donkeys aged 1 to 15 years f

Emergence of bovine ehrlichiosis in Belgian cattle herds.

Bovine ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne rickettsial disease caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum. The disease can also be transmitted to humans. Outbreaks in cattle have been described in many European countries. In Belgium, infections caused by A. phagocytophilum have been reported in humans and dogs; however, this paper details the first report of ehrlichiosis in cattle herds in Belgium. The first case described was in a dairy herd located in eastern Belgium. Clinical signs included hyperthermia, polypnea, and swelling of the limbs. The other case was diagnosed in a second, mixed purpose herd in

A model for the development of the free-living stages of Ostertagia leptospicularis, used in conjunction with on-farm egg count data, to estimate sources of pasture contamination on New Zealand red deer (Cervus elaphus) farms.

Farmed red deer face challenges from nematode parasites, primarily the pulmonary species Dictyocaulus eckerti and the complex of Ostertagiinae nematodes in the abomasum. Previous investigations on New Zealand deer farms identified limited seasonality in faecal egg and larval output in all stock classes, however, this does not indicate the key times of year those eggs develop into infective-stage larvae, and subsequently contribute to infection risk. A simple temperature-driven model was developed for the free-living stages of a representative deer-specific Ostertagiinae species; Ostertagia lep
