There was an outbreak of Japanese encephalitis (JE) during July/August of 1993 in Rourkela City of Orissa, India. Among the serum samples, 40% of the sera showed antibodies against JE, while 17% of the sera showed recent infection to dengue virus. As many as 15 species of mosquitos were encountered in and around the affected areas. Species like Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Cx, vishnui, Cx. pseudovishnui and Cx. bitaeniorhynchus constituted 19% of the total collections. The above species were resistant to DDT and dieldrin, but susceptible to malathion.

1500 male mice, previously acclimatized to 8,22 or 38 degrees C, were used to determine the median lethal doses of organic solvents, heavy metals and agricultural chemicals by the Up-and-Down method via several routes of administration. Acute toxicity of benzene, trichloroethylene, mercuric chloride, cadmium chloride, fratol, methylparathion and dieldrin increased markedly at a low temperature of 8 degrees C, as well as at a high temperature of 38 degrees C. Acute toxicity of toluene, copper sulfate and chromium trioxide was only enhanced at a high temperature of 38 degrees C.

Ninety-nine soil samples from the rice-growing states of Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas were collected, primarily to monitor the herbicide propanil. Pesticide contamination poses a significant threat to non-target wildlife, including amphibians, many of which are already highly threatened. Residue levels of organochlorine pesticides have been determined in raw fruits, vegetables and tubers from markets in Nigeria. In the fruits, total HCH, aldrin and total DDT were detected in 77, 38 and 30% of all samples, respectively.
