Maternal Malnutrition Affects Hepatic Metabolism through Decreased Hepatic Taurine Levels and Changes in HNF4A Methylation.

Fetal programming implies that the maternal diet during pregnancy affects the long-term health of offspring. Although maternal diet influences metabolic disorders and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in offspring, the hepatic mechanisms related to metabolites are still unknown. Here, we investigated the maternal diet-related alterations in metabolites and the biological pathway in male offspring at three months of age. Pregnant rats were exposed to 50% food restriction during the prenatal period or a 45% high-fat diet during the prenatal and postnatal periods. The male offspring exposed to fo

A Randomized Controlled Trial Investigating the Impact of a Low-Calorie Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) on Anthropometric and Glycemic Measures in Patients Experiencing Weight Regain 2 Years Post Sleeve Surgery.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of a low-calorie dietary approach to stop hypertension (DASH) compared to a low-calorie diet on weight control, body composition and glycemic measures in post sleeve patients with weight regain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were randomly allocated to either the low-calorie DASH diet group (intervention) or the low-calorie diet group (control) for a duration of 16 weeks. Both groups had a prescribed caloric intake of 1000-1200 calories. The DASH diet group made dietary adjustments in accordance with the DASH pattern. RESULTS: At the end of the study, bot

The Personalized Nutrition Study (POINTS): evaluation of a genetically informed weight loss approach, a Randomized Clinical Trial.

Weight loss (WL) differences between isocaloric high-carbohydrate and high-fat diets are generally small; however, individual WL varies within diet groups. Genotype patterns may modify diet effects, with carbohydrate-responsive genotypes losing more weight on high-carbohydrate diets (and vice versa for fat-responsive genotypes). We investigated whether 12-week WL (kg, primary outcome) differs between genotype-concordant and genotype-discordant diets. In this 12-week single-center WL trial, 145 participants with overweight/obesity were identified a priori as fat-responders or carbohydrate-respo

Retinal Microvasculature and Neural Changes and Dietary Patterns in an Older Population in Southern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Like other parts of the body, the retina and its neurovascular system are also affected by age-related changes. The rising age of populations worldwide makes it important to study the pathologies related to age and their potential risk factors, such as diet and eating habits. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive power of food groups versus retinal features among noninstitutionalized older adults from Southern Italy using a machine learning approach. METHODS: We recruited 530 subjects, with a mean age of 74 years, who were drawn from the large population of the S

Dietary treatment of congenital chylothorax with skimmed breast milk.

BACKGROUND: Congenital chylothorax (CC) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition in newborns. It is defined as an accumulation of chyle in the pleural cavity. The few publications regarding medical management and therapeutic dietary intervention motivated us to share our experience. METHODS: Neonates diagnosed with congenital chylothorax and treated at Innsbruck Medical University Hospital between 2013 and 2020 (n = 6, gestational age: 36 3/7, 32 5/7, 36 4/7, 35 0/7, 35 4/7, 37 3/7 weeks) were eligible for this report. The cornerstones of treatment for chylothorax conventionally c

The influence of a low-fat diet on incidence and severity of migraine headaches.

Migraine headaches are a common, debilitating syndrome causing untold suffering and loss of productivity. A review of the literature indicates that high levels of blood lipids and high levels of free fatty acids are among the important factors involved in triggering migraine headaches. Under these conditions, platelet aggregability, which is associated with decreased serotonin and heightened prostaglandin levels, is increased. This leads to vasodilation, the immediate precursor of migraine headache. A high-fat diet is one factor that may directly affect this process. This study, undertaken to

Advances and Clues of Nutritional Adjuvant Therapy for Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is an inherited peripheral neuropathy with significant genetic heterogeneity and clinical variability. Currently, there are no specific drugs to cure the disease, and adjuvant therapies are used to alleviate the symptoms. By supporting the functions of nerves, bones, and muscles, as well as systemic metabolism, personalized intakes of energy and nutrients help slow down disease progression, delay CMT onset, relieve the suffering and pain of patients, and improve their quality of life. This review discusses the research progress on energy- and fat-manipulated d

A Mediterranean and low-fat dietary intervention in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease patients: Exploring participant experience and perceptions about dietary change.

BACKGROUND: A Mediterranean diet (MD) appears to be beneficial in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients in Mediterranean countries; however, the acceptability of a MD in non-Mediterranean populations has not been thoroughly explored. The present study aimed to explore the acceptability through understanding the barriers and enablers of the MD and low-fat diet (LFD) interventions as perceived by participating Australian adults from multicultural backgrounds with NAFLD. METHODS: Semi-structured telephone interviews were performed with 23 NAFLD trial participants at the end of a 12-

Regular-fat and low-fat dairy foods and cardiovascular diseases: perspectives for future dietary recommendations.

Most current dietary guidelines for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) recommend the consumption of low-fat dairy in place of regular-fat dairy foods, one of the main sources of dietary saturated fatty acids (SFAs). Here, we summarize the data presented and discussions held-relating to the validity of such recommendations-between a panel of international nutrition research experts at a high-level closed workshop on "Saturated Fat in Dairy and Cardiovascular Diseases," which took place in Amsterdam on 15-16 April, 2024. The most recent evidence indicates that overall, consumption o

Differential effects of high-fat diet on glucose tolerance, food intake, and glucocorticoid regulation in male C57BL/6J and BALB/cJ mice.

The C57BL/6J strain of laboratory mice is a popular subject for studies of diet-induced obesity and diabetes given its propensity for developing obesity and glucose intolerance when placed on high-fat diet. High-fat diet leads to much lower weight gain in young adult BALB/cJ mice, which appear to be protected from many of the metabolic effects of high-fat diet observed in C57BL/6J mice. In this report, the effects of diet and timing of feeding on body weight, food intake, glucose tolerance, and stress-induced corticosterone and blood glucose responses were assessed in male C57BL/6J and BALB/cJ

High-protein diet more effectively reduces hepatic fat than low-protein diet despite lower autophagy and FGF21 levels.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming increasingly prevalent and nutrition intervention remains the most important therapeutic approach for NAFLD. Our aim was to investigate whether low- (LP) or high-protein (HP) diets are more effective in reducing liver fat and reversing NAFLD and which mechanisms are involved. METHODS: 19 participants with morbid obesity undergoing bariatric surgery were randomized into two hypocaloric (1500-1600 kcal/day) diet groups, a low protein (10E% protein) and a high protein (30E% protein), for three weeks prior to surgery. Cadmium and High-Fat Diet Disrupt Renal, Cardiac and Hepatic Essential Metals.

Exposure to the environmental toxicant cadmium (Cd) contributes to the development of obesity-associated diseases. Obesity is a risk factor for a spectrum of unhealthy conditions including systemic metabolic dyshomeostasis. In the present study, the effects of whole-life exposure to environmentally-relevant concentrations of Cd on systemic essential metal distribution in adult mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) were examined. For these studies, male and female mice were exposed to Cd-containing drinking water for >2 weeks before breeding. Pregnant mice and dams with offspring were exposed to Cd-co

An investigation to determine the nutritional adequacy and individuals experience of a very low fat diet used to treat type V hypertriglyceridaemia.

BACKGROUND: The management of Type V hypertriglyceridaemia at some centres involves the use of a very low fat diet (15% energy as fat). There is no published research examining compliance with, or nutritional adequacy, of this treatment. This study assesses the nutritional adequacy of the diet and examines barriers and enablers to adherence. METHODS: Fifty-four eligible patients were invited to take part. Eight males and one female agreed to participate. One male later withdrew. The mean age of participants was 49.4 years (SD 12.9 years), their mean BMI was 30.4 kg m(-2) (SD 3.4 kg m(-2)) and

Influence of dietary factors on actinically-induced skin cancer.

The first indication that high dietary fat intake could influence the development of ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced skin cancer in experimental animals was reported in 1939. In the 1980s a series of animal studies showed that a high level of dietary fat intake markedly shortened the time between UV exposure and tumor appearance and increased the number of tumors that developed. Further, high levels of dietary fat affected skin cancer development at the promotional stage of UV-carcinogenesis, i.e., after the cancer causing dose of UV had been delivered. Perhaps more important, switching fro

Popular exclusionary diets for inflammatory bowel disease: the search for a dietary culprit.

The evolving understanding of the role of the microbiome and environmental factors in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease makes diet an interesting and potentially powerful tool in the treatment of disease. However, at this time, evidence is limited but anecdotal reports of success abound. There is a bewildering array of new diets being tried by patients in an attempt to control diseases. This review attempts to summarize the most common diets for the treating physician.

Pretreatment predictors of weight loss in a 12-month behavioral obesity treatment: a signal detection analysis of DIETFITS.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to identify pretreatment predictors of weight loss in a 12-month behavioral obesity treatment that restricted either fat or carbohydrates. METHODS: Participants were 436 adults with overweight or obesity from the Diet Intervention Examining The Factors Interacting with Treatment Success (DIETFITS) trial. Signal detection analysis was used to identify which combinations of 51 pretreatment demographic, clinical, behavioral, and psychosocial variables, along with diet type (healthy low-fat vs. healthy low-carbohydrate), formed subgroups that varied in p

Common questions and misconceptions about diets: what does the scientific evidence really show?

The study of diet and nutrition is often filled with numerous myths and misconceptions. A Google Scholar search of "diets health" yields over 4 million results. This review examines frequently asked questions about diets and dietary habits. These questions include the following: 1) Is a caloric surplus necessary for building skeletal muscle? 2) Is it possible to lose body mass or fat mass without caloric restriction? 3) Is intermittent fasting better than chronic caloric restriction for weight loss? 4) Are there sex differences in the response to fasting? 5) Can diet alone fulfill the macro an

Weight Loss and Serum Lipids in Overweight and Obese Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Excess adipose tissue is associated with an abnormal lipid profile that may improve with weight reduction. In this meta-analysis, we aimed to estimate the magnitude of change in lipid parameters associated with weight loss in adults who are overweight or obese. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Scopus from 2013 to September, 2018. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated interventions to treat adult obesity (lifestyle, pharmacologic and surgical) with follow-up of 6 months or more. RESULTS: We included 73 RCTs

Impact of diet and exercise in growth restricted female rats on nephron endowment in male fetuses.

Uteroplacental insufficiency impairs kidney development and programs male-onset cardiorenal disease, which can be transmitted to subsequent generations. Maternal lifestyle factors can independently influence fetal kidney development, highlighting that the lifestyle of growth-restricted females can have further influence on F2 kidney development. In this study, we examined the impact of maternal growth restriction with or without additional lifestyle factors on F2 male kidney development. Uteroplacental insufficiency (Restricted) or sham (Control) surgery was performed on embryonic day 18 in Wi
