Dietary protein intake and nutritional status in patients with renal transplant.

BACKGROUND: Uremic patients on regular dialysis treatment (RDT) obtain and maintain with difficulty an adequate nutritional status. Successful kidney transplantation allows remarkable rehabilitation of patients with end-stage renal disease previously on RDT. However, information concerning the role of dietary protein restriction in the treatment of patients with chronic transplant rejection is scarce. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The role of dietary protein restriction in the treatment of patients with chronic transplant rejection was studied over 10 years in 42 patients with a kidney transplant to

Association between protein diet score and colorectal adenomas risk: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Given the significantly increased risk of colorectal adenoma in middle-aged and elderly populations, identifying modifiable risk factors remains a priority. While dietary protein is an essential nutrient in human metabolism, its relationship with colorectal adenoma remains controversial. With advances in nutritional science, contemporary dietary guidelines advocate increasing plant-based protein intake to achieve a more balanced protein consumption pattern. To provide new insights, we sought to investigate the association between colorectal adenoma risk and the Protein Diet Score, w

A Plant-Dominant Low-Protein Diet in Chronic Kidney Disease Management: A Narrative Review with Considerations for Cyprus.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major global health challenge, significantly contributing to morbidity and mortality due to its strong association with cardiovascular complications, metabolic imbalances, and reduced quality of life. Among the various interventions for CKD management, nutrition therapy plays a critical role in slowing disease progression and improving patient outcomes. The Plant-Dominant Low-Protein Diet (PLADO) has emerged as a promising dietary strategy that prioritizes plant-based protein sources while restricting overall protein intake, offering potential renal, cardiovas

Long-term effects of maternal magnesium restriction on adiposity and insulin resistance in rat pups.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the long-term effects of maternal/postnatal magnesium (Mg) restriction on adiposity, glucose tolerance, and insulin secretion in the offspring and the probable biochemical mechanisms associated with them. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Female weanling Wistar/NIN (WNIN) rats received a control diet or 70% Mg-restricted (MgR) diet for 9 weeks and mated with control males. A third of the restricted dams were shifted to control diet from parturition. Half of the pups born to the remaining restricted dams were weaned on to control diet, while the other half continued on MgR die

Long-term metabolic effects of malnutrition: Liver steatosis and insulin resistance following early-life protein restriction.

Early postnatal-life malnutrition remains prevalent globally, and about 45% of all child deaths are linked to malnutrition. It is not clear whether survivors of childhood malnutrition suffer from long-term metabolic effects, especially when they are later in life exposed to a fat and carbohydrate rich obesogenic diet. The lack of knowledge around this dietary "double burden" warrants studies to understand the long-term consequences of children previously exposed to malnutrition. We hypothesized that an early-life nutritional insult of low protein consumption in mice would lead to long-term met

Protein turnover in tissues of the fetal rat after prolonged maternal malnutrition.

Protein turnover in fetal diaphragm, heart, liver, and brain was determined at 21 days gestation in fetal rats whose mothers had received a protein-restricted diet (6% protein) throughout gestation. This diet resulted in severe combined protein-calorie malnutrition. Fetal body weight was significantly decreased at days 19-22 gestation versus controls (27% protein diet) when pregnant animals were protein-restricted (e.g. 40% decrease in body weight at day 22 gestation versus controls). Protein synthesis was determined by intravenous injection of "massive" amounts of [3H]phenylalanine to pregnan

Mice Lacking the Intestinal and Renal Neutral Amino Acid Transporter SLC6A19 Demonstrate the Relationship between Dietary Protein Intake and Amino Acid Malabsorption.

Dietary protein restriction has beneficial impacts on metabolic health. B0AT1 (SLC6A19) is the major transporter of neutral amino acids at the intestinal epithelia and absorbs the bulk of the diet-derived neutral amino acids from the intestinal lumen. It also reabsorbs neutral amino acids in the renal proximal tubules. Mice lacking B0AT1 show cellular outcomes of protein restriction, such as high FGF21 levels and low mTORC1 activity. Moreover, they have improved glucose homeostasis and resist diet-induced obesity. In this study, we investigated the relationship between protein restriction and

[Study on the pathogenetic factors of the progression of renal insufficiency, with special reference to the effects of dietary protein intake].

The effects of dietary protein intake on the progression of renal insufficiency were studied in daunomycin (DMC) induced nephrotic rats (DMC rats) and also patients with chronic renal diseases. In the first study, the author examined which treatment among enalapril (E) and indomethacin (I) and dietary protein restriction was the most effective to prevent proteinuria and glomerulosclerosis, and then the effect of dietary protein restriction on renal content of malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in DMC rats. These rats were divided into four groups as follows: group PL and grou

Role of low protein and low phosphorus diet in the progression of chronic kidney disease in uremic rats.

Restriction of dietary protein is useful for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients to protect residual renal function. However, the mechanism by which a low protein diet confers a beneficial effect in CKD patients remains unknown. One possibility is that the benefit from a low protein diet is associated with phosphorus restriction. The aim of this study is to compare the effect of protein and phosphorus on the progression of renal insufficiency using irreversible Thy1 rats, which histopathologically resemble IgA nephropathy. Irreversible Thy1 rats were fed six types of isocaloric diets consist

Transgenerational enhancement of low-protein feed utilization in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) via parental injection with fragmented shark DNA.

The protein fraction is the most expensive component in aquafeed. This study aimed to determine if injecting fragmented shark (Squalus acanthias) DNA into Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) broodstock could enhance the offspring's ability to utilize low-protein diets. Shark genomic DNA was used as a donor source to investigate if its high metabolic efficiency and growth traits could biologically complement and improve feed utilization in tilapia fed low-protein diets. A 2 × 3 factorial design was used, where offspring from genetically modified (GM) and wild-type (WT) broodstock were fed diet

The Influence of Dietary Patterns on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Management in Women: A Review of Randomized Controlled Trials with and Without an Isocaloric Dietary Design.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder that causes cardiometabolic and reproductive disorders in women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS are more likely to have obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease. There is an inconclusive consensus on which dietary modification could be most effective in PCOS prevention and treatment. This review aimed to examine the effects of diverse dietary patterns on PCOS in women according to randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with and without an isocaloric dietary design. A literature search was performed in the PubMed®®

A High-Fat, High-Protein, Carbohydrate-Restricted Dietary Interventions in Pompe Disease: A Case Series with Long-Term Follow-Up.

INTRODUCTION: Pompe disease (PD) is a lysosomal storage disorder characterized by progressive glycogen accumulation leading to cardiomyopathy and motor decline. Despite the survival benefits of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), the long-term clinical course is often complicated by persistent skeletal muscle pathology, necessitating effective adjunctive interventions. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of a high fat, high protein, carbohydrate-restricted dietary intervention in patients with PD. METHODS: Data collected included the initial and duration of dietary treatment, tota

Maternal Protein Restriction Alters the Expression of Proteins Related to the Structure and Functioning of the Rat Offspring Epididymis in an Age-Dependent Manner.

Nutrition is an environmental factor able to activate physiological interactions between fetus and mother. Maternal protein restriction is able to alter sperm parameters associated with epididymal functions. Since correct development and functioning of the epididymides are fundamental for mammalian reproductive success, this study investigated the effects of maternal protein restriction on epididymal morphology and morphometry in rat offspring as well as on the expression of Src, Cldn-1, AR, ER, aromatase p450, and 5α-reductase in different stages of postnatal epididymal development. Low-protein diet changes thyroid function in lactating rats.

Lactating rats were fed with free access to an 8% protein-restricted diet (PR); the control group was fed a 23% protein diet (C). An energy-restricted (pair-fed) group was given the same food as the animals in the control group, but the amounts of food consumed by both PF and PR were about the same. The body weight and serum albumin concentration of PR and PF dams were significantly (P < 0. 05) lower than that of the controls. The PR group had a significant increase in serum-free triiodothyronine (FT3) concentration, 24-hr mammary gland and milk radioiodine (I131) uptake (67%, 278%, and 200%,

Branched-chain amino acids, especially of leucine and valine, mediate the protein restricted response in a piglet model.

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are reduced in various protein restricted models, while the detailed role of BCAAs in protein restricted response is still obscure. Thus, the current study mainly investigated the amino acid metabolism in protein restricted piglets and the effects of BCAA balance in a low-protein diet on growth performance, amino acid metabolism, intestinal structure, and gut microbiota with focus on which BCAAs contributed to the protein restricted response. The results showed that protein restriction increased serum Ser, Thr, Ala, Lys, and Trp but reduced His, Cys, Val, and

Placental transfer of methionine during protein restriction in the rhesus monkey studied by position emission tomography.

Four pregnant Rhesus monkeys were given a 1 week protein restricted diet with the objective to monitor possible effects on transplacental transfer of [11CH3]-L-methionine with positron emission tomography (PET). The weight was reduced in all monkeys, two of which later had an intrauterine fetal death. The mean venous serum concentrations of free methionine in the mothers were not significantly changed during the study period, although a tendency towards lower values during protein restriction was noted like in the majority of the amino acids. The uptake of trace amount of [11CH3]-L-methionine
