[Clinical investigation of oral submucous fibrosis].

In the Xiang Tan city of the Hunan Province 3015 adult of betel were examined intra-orally. Twenty-nine cases of oral submucous fibrosis were found. Other five cases were collected from out-patient department of the hospital. There were thirty-four cases altogether. In the control group, no case was found. The patients of submucous fibrosis were not chewers of tobacco. Four cases of leukoplakia has been found in them. There was not, however, a single case of oral cancer. The clinical investigation supports that chewing of betel is an important etiological factor of oral submucous fibrosis.

Salsalate and Adiponectin Improve Palmitate-Induced Insulin Resistance via Inhibition of Selenoprotein P through the AMPK-FOXO1α Pathway.

Selenoprotein P (SeP) was recently identified as a hepatokine that induces insulin resistance (IR) in rodents and humans. Recent clinical trials have shown that salsalate, a prodrug of salicylate, significantly lowers blood glucose levels and increases adiponectin concentrations. We examined the effects of salsalate and full length-adiponectin (fAd) on the expression of SeP under hyperlipidemic conditions and explored their regulatory mechanism on SeP. In palmitate-treated HepG2 cells as well as high fat diet (HFD)-fed male Spraque Dawley (SD) rats and male db/db mice, SeP expression and its r

Label free multimodal optical imaging of metabolic heterogeneity in aging by integrating SRS, MPF, FLIM, and SHG.

Cellular metabolism is governed by the coordinated organization of macromolecules, including lipids and proteins, together with redox-active cofactors such as NADH and FAD. However, resolving these biochemical features quantitatively and spatially at subcellular resolution remains challenging because no single imaging modality can capture molecular composition, redox state, and tissue architecture simultaneously without labeling. Here, we present MANIFEST ( M ulti-mod A l N onlinear I maging with F luorescence E xcitation and S tatistical T emporal-resolved spectroscopy), a label-free imaging

Combined exposure to silica nanoparticles and high-fat diet modulates metabolism-associated fatty liver disease via the gut-liver axis.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of metabolism-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is associated with environmental pollutants and dietary factors, yet the synergistic effect and underlying mechanism of silica nanoparticles (SiNP) and a high-fat diet (HFD) remain unclear. METHODS: This study aimed to investigate the role of the gut-liver axis in MAFLD pathogenesis induced by co-exposure to SiNP and HFD, utilizing a multi-omics approach. RESULTS: In this study, we found that combined SiNP and HFD exposure exacerbated liver injury, as evidenced by significant steatosis, inflammatory in

Overnutrition in spiny mice (Acomys cahirinus): beta-cell expansion leading to rupture and overt diabetes on fat-rich diet and protective energy-wasting elevation in thyroid hormone on sucrose-rich diet.

PREVIOUS STUDIES: The investigation of diabetes propensity in spiny mice, performed in Geneva and Jerusalem colonies, is reviewed. Spiny mice live in semi-desert regions of the eastern Mediterranean countries. Those transferred to Geneva in the 1950s were maintained on a rodent diet supplemented by fat-rich seeds. They became obese, exhibited pancreatic islet hyperplasia and hypertrophy. Low insulin secretion response was characteristic of this species, despite ample pancreatic content of insulin. After a few months, diabetes with ketosis occurred, often suddenly, in association with islet cel

The effects of quinoa bran dietary fiber on glucose and lipid metabolism and hepatic transcriptome in obese rats.

BACKGROUND: As a complex chronic metabolic disease, obesity not only affects the quality of human life but also increases the risk of various other diseases. Therefore, it is important to investigate the molecular mechanisms and therapeutic effects of dietary interventions that counteract obesity. RESULTS: In this study, we extracted soluble (SDF) and insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) from quinoa bran using an enzymatic method and further investigated their effects on lipid metabolism and blood lipid levels in obese rats. Quinoa bran dietary fiber showed significantly reduced body weight, blood g

Peripheral neuropathy of dietary riboflavin deficiency in chickens.

A strain of rapidly growing meat-type chickens was fed a diet deficient in riboflavin from 1-40 days of age. Diminished growth rate, progressive gait abnormality and reluctance to move were noted beginning on day 8. Neurologic abnormalities were related to peripheral neuropathy characterized by Schwann cell hypertrophy and degeneration with cytoplasmic lipid droplets' and segmental demyelination. Lesions were initially detected on day 10, and in concert with clinical signs became more profound between days 14 and 21. Sequestration of myelin debris within Schwann cells was common. Other feature

Oral manifestations of nutritional disorders.

Nutritional deficiencies occur when body metabolic requirements are not matched by intake and absorption. Reasons for this discrepancy are numerous, but often social, economic, medical, and even psychiatric factors may play a role. Vitamins and minerals are required for appropriate rapid cell turnover of the oral mucosa. The oral cavity is a unique anatomic environment that may manifest early signs of nutritional disorders as well as other indicators of systemic disease. Knowledge of these oral manifestations and associated findings will allow a practitioner to consider a nutritional disorder

The Interaction Between Fatty Acid Desaturase-2 (FADS2) rs174583 Genetic Variant and Dietary Quality Indices (DASH and MDS) Constructs Different Metabolic Phenotypes Among Obese Individuals.

Background and Aim: Genetic variation in fatty acid desaturases (FADS) has previously been linked to several diet-related diseases. We aimed to determine whether the FADS2 rs174583 variant interacts with the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) score and Mediterranean dietary score (MDS) to influence cardio-metabolic risk factors among obese adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed among 347 apparently healthy obese adults (aged 20-50 years). Dietary quality indicator scores (DASH and MDS) were generated using a validated 147-item Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Th

Impact of Maternal Riboflavin Deficiency on the Growth and Development of Offspring Rats.

BACKGROUND: Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is crucial for energy metabolism and several physiological processes. Pregnant women have a greater chance of being riboflavin-deficient, but its effects on offspring development remain understudied. METHODS: Two-month-old female Wistar (WNIN) rats were randomly divided into three groups: control (AIN-93G diet with 5 mg/kg riboflavin), pair-fed, and riboflavin-deficient (0.5 mg/kg). After 6 weeks, riboflavin deficiency was confirmed in the riboflavin-deficient group. All groups of rats were allowed to mate with male littermates. The pups stayed with their m

Dietary fat intake, supplements, and weight loss.

Although there remains controversy regarding the role of macronutrient balance in the etiology of obesity, the consumption of high-fat diets appears to be strongly implicated in its development. Evidence that fat oxidation does not adjust rapidly to acute increases in dietary fat, as well as a decreased capacity to oxidize fat in the postprandial state in the obese, suggest that diets high in fat may lead to the accumulation of fat stores. Novel data is also presented suggesting that in rodents, high-fat diets may lead to the development of leptin resistance in skeletal muscle and subsequent a

Nonceliac gluten sensitivity.

During the past decade there has been an impressive increase in popularity of the gluten-free diet (GFD)-now the most trendy alimentary habit in the United States and other countries. According to recent surveys, as many as 100 million Americans will consume gluten-free products within a year. Operating under the concept that the GFD benefits only individuals with celiac disease, health care professionals have struggled to separate the wheat from the chaff; there are claims that eliminating gluten from the diet increases health and helps with weight loss, or even that gluten can be harmful to

Health effects of intermittent fasting: hormesis or harm? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent fasting, alternate-day fasting, and other forms of periodic caloric desistance are gaining popularity in the lay press and among animal research scientists. Whether clinical evidence exists for or is strong enough to support the use of such dietary regimens as health interventions is unclear. OBJECTIVE: This review sought to identify rigorous, clinically relevant research studies that provide high-quality evidence that therapeutic fasting regimens are clinically beneficial to humans. DESIGN: A systematic review of the published literature through January 2015 was per

Slow-Release H2S Donor Anethole Dithiolethione Protects Liver From Lipotoxicity by Improving Fatty Acid Metabolism.

"Lipotoxicity" induced by free fatty acids (FAs) plays a central role in the pathogenesis of many metabolic diseases, with few treatment options available today. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a novel gaseous signaling molecule, has been reported to have a variety of pharmacological properties, but its effect on FAs metabolism remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect and mechanisms of anethole dithiolethione (ADT, a sustained-release H2S donor) on hepatic FAs metabolism. ADT was administered daily for 4 weeks in male Syrian golden hamsters fed a high fat diet (HFD), an

A single-cell transcriptomic atlas of all cell types in the brain of 5xFAD Alzheimer mice in response to dietary inulin supplementation.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that is a major threat to the aging population. Due to lack of effective therapy, preventive treatments are important strategies to limit AD onset and progression, of which dietary regimes have been implicated as a key factor. Diet with high fiber content is known to have beneficial effects on cognitive decline in AD. However, a global survey on microbiome and brain cell dynamics in response to high fiber intake at single-cell resolution in AD mouse models is still missing. RESULTS: Here, we show that dietary inul

The role of riboflavin refeeding in reversing deficiency effects on duck reproductive performance and embryonic development.

Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is essential for poultry reproduction and embryonic development. Riboflavin deficiency adversely affects egg hatchability and embryonic survival, but whether these effects are reversible remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the effect of riboflavin refeeding (RR) on reproductive performance, embryonic development, riboflavin status, antioxidant capacity, and hepatic metabolism in duck breeders and embryos. A total of 60 duck breeders (40 weeks, 3.45 ± 0.90 kg) were randomly assigned to two groups: a riboflavin-deficient (RD) group (n = 40) and a control (CON) gro
