Chirality enhances diffusion in disordered environments.

Chirality, a systematic rotational bias in the motion of a particle, arises in a wide range of physical and biological systems, from charged colloids in magnetic fields to swimming bacteria near surfaces. While its effects in homogeneous environments are well understood, the interplay between chirality and structural disorder has remained largely unexplored. Here, we investigate the chiral random walk on two-dimensional percolation clusters above the percolation threshold, combining numerical simulations with an analytically tractable annealed-disorder approximation. We find that the long-time

Drift-diffusion dynamics of hippocampal replay.

Replay in the hippocampus during sharp-wave ripples is thought to play major roles in learning and memory. However, existing analysis methods often lead to inconsistent and inaccurate metrics for characterizing replay dynamics. We develop a novel computational framework that models the replay dynamics using a drift-diffusion process. Further, to capture the potentially rich population-level dynamics during sharp-wave ripples, our model allows switching between multiple well-motivated types of dynamics. Applications of our method to rat hippocampal recordings lead to a number of insights. First

Diffusion-Mediated Superelongation in Metal Nanorods.

We report in situ electron microscopy observation of the superelongation deformation of low-melting-point metal nanorods. Specifically, metal nanorods with diameters as small as 143 nm can undergo uniform stretching by an extraordinary 786% at ∼0.87T_{m} without necking. Moreover, the corresponding fracture stress exhibits a pronounced size effect. By combining experimental observations with molecular dynamic simulations, a crystal-core-liquid-shell structure is revealed, based on which a constitutive model that incorporates diffusion creep mechanism and surface tension effect is developed to

Diffusion-weighted imaging of the orbit.

Orbital lesions compose a heterogeneous group of pathologies that often present with non-specific imaging findings on conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences (T1-and T2-weighted). Accordingly, the application of diffusion MRI offers an opportunity to further distinguish between lesions along this spectrum. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) represents the simplest and most frequent clinically utilised diffusion imaging technique. Recent advances in DWI techniques have extended its application to the evaluation of a wider spectrum of neurological pathology, including orbital lesio

Mapping pontocerebellar connectivity with diffusion MRI.

The cerebellum's involvement in cognitive, affective and motor functions is mediated by connections to different regions of the cerebral cortex. A distinctive feature of cortico-cerebellar loops that has been demonstrated in the animal work is a topographic organization that is preserved across its corticopontine, pontocerebellar, and cerebello-thalmo-cortical segments. Here we used tractography derived from diffusion imaging data to characterize the connections between the pons and the individual lobules of the cerebellum and generate a parcellation of the pons and middle cerebellar peduncle

Cerebellar restricted diffusion in Wernicke's encephalopathy.

A 50-year-old woman presented to an outside hospital for acute onset bilateral lower limb pain. She was diagnosed with aortoiliac stenosis and underwent stent placement. Post-procedure, she was noted to have altered mental status, truncal ataxia, neck titubation, and incomplete external ophthalmoplegia. She rapidly declined to a stuporous state. She had a history of uterine cancer treated with chemoradiation which was complicated by chronic radiation enteritis. She was also reported to have poor oral intake, recurrent emesis, and weight loss for a month before her presentation. After an extens

Diffusion in multicomponent aqueous alcoholic mixtures.

The Fick diffusion coefficient matrix of the highly associating quaternary mixture water + methanol + ethanol + 2-propanol as well as its ternary and binary subsystems is analyzed with molecular dynamics simulation techniques. Three of the ternary subsystems are studied in this sense for the first time. The predictive capability of the employed force fields, which were sampled with the Green-Kubo formalism and Kirkwood-Buff integration, is confirmed by comparison with experimental literature data on vapor-liquid equilibrium, shear viscosity and Fick diffusion coefficient, wherever possible. Isavuconazole Diffusion in Infected Human Brain.

We report the cases of a 39-year-old woman with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and a 21-year-old man with chronic granulomatous disease treated for cerebral aspergillosis. The patients required radical surgery for infection progression despite adequate isavuconazole plasma concentration or neurological complication. We thus decided to measure the brain isavuconazole concentration. These results suggest that the concentrations of isavuconazole obtained in the infected brain tissue clearly differ from those obtained in the normal brain tissue and the cerebrospinal fluid.

Diffusion characteristics of pediatric pineal tumors.

BACKGROUND: Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) has been shown to be helpful in characterizing tumor cellularity, and predicting histology. Several works have evaluated this technique for pineal tumors; however studies to date have not focused on pediatric pineal tumors. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the diffusion characteristics of pediatric pineal tumors to confirm if patterns seen in studies using mixed pediatric and adult populations remain valid. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was performed after Institutional Review Board approval. We retrospectively evaluated all patients 18 y

[Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging of thorax].

Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of Thorax is only useful for morphological evaluation, currently we can use it for functional evaluation such as diffusion weighted imaging. Currently, we can obtain higher quality images because of new technologies such as software that decrease motion artefact, use of multi-channel, parallel imaging and fast sequences. Many promising results of thorax MRI have been published. It may also be an alternative to thorax computed tomography in some indications without radiation exposure risk. In this review, we evaluated current literature on use of DWI MR

Diffusion tensor imaging in musculoskeletal disorders.

Diffusion tensor (DT) imaging is an emerging magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technique for evaluating the microstructure of well-organized biologic tissues such as muscles and nerves. DT imaging provides information about tissue microstructure by producing three-dimensional maps of water molecule movements. The two main parameters of measurement at DT imaging, fractional anisotropy and the apparent diffusion coefficient, allow quantitation of architectural changes occurring in tissue. These parameters are modified in the presence of cervical spondylotic myelopathy, cervical spine trauma, carpa

Diffusion-weighted imaging of ocular melanoma.

OBJECTIVES: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) allows characterization of masses on the basis of their cellular density. We hypothesized that ocular melanoma has a marked diffusion restriction as seen in other malignant tumors. Furthermore, we aimed to assess whether DWI is useful to differentiate ocular melanoma from retinal detachment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The institutional review board approved the prospective study on 44 patients investigated with ocular magnetic resonance imaging including DWI during a 9-month period. Resolving complex mixtures: trilinear diffusion data.

Complex mixtures are at the heart of biology, and biomacromolecules almost always exhibit their function in a mixture, e.g., the mode of action for a spider venom is typically dependent on a cocktail of compounds, not just the protein. Information about diseases is encoded in body fluids such as urine and plasma in the form of metabolite concentrations determined by the actions of enzymes. To understand better what is happening in real living systems we urgently need better methods to characterize such mixtures. In this paper we describe a potent way to disentangle the NMR spectra of mixture c

Diffusion tensor imaging in anxiety disorders.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can be used to examine the structural integrity of regional white matter and to map white matter tracts. DTI studies have been performed in several psychiatric disorders, especially in those for which a developmental or a neuropsychiatric component was postulated. Thus far, the use of DTI has been very limited in panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder, and somewhat more extensive in post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. In most anxiety disorders, the results of DTI studies are in line with other struc

Reaction-diffusion model of atherosclerosis development.

Atherosclerosis begins as an inflammation in blood vessel walls (intima). The inflammatory response of the organism leads to the recruitment of monocytes. Trapped in the intima, they differentiate into macrophages and foam cells leading to the production of inflammatory cytokines and further recruitment of white blood cells. This self-accelerating process, strongly influenced by low-density lipoproteins (cholesterol), results in a dramatic increase of the width of blood vessel walls, formation of an atherosclerotic plaque and, possibly, of its rupture. We suggest a 2D mathematical model of the

Diffusion imaging, white matter, and psychopathology.

The functional significance of the brain's white matter was not fully appreciated until new imaging methods were developed to visualize fiber pathways and connections in the living brain. Rapid advances in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) have led to substantial insights into human brain development and disease processes and have thrust white matter into the focus of researchers and clinicians alike. The full clinical potential of this relatively new technique remains to be determined, but early indicators suggest that DTI will be a significant new technology in mapping mechanisms of human healt

[Diffusion-weighted MRI of the prostate].

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) can complement MRI of the prostate in the detection and localization of prostate cancer, particularly after previous negative biopsy. A total of 13 original reports and 2 reviews published in 2010 demonstrate that prostate cancer can be detected by DWI due to its increased cell density and decreased diffusiveness, either qualitatively in DWI images or quantitatively by means of the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC). In the prostate, the ADC is influenced by the strength of diffusion weighting, localization (peripheral or transitional zone)

Diffusion tensor imaging of Aicardi syndrome.

Aicardi syndrome is a congenital neurodevelopmental disorder associated with significant cognitive and motor impairment. Diffusion tensor imaging was performed on two subjects with Aicardi syndrome, as well as on two matched subjects with callosal agenesis and cortical malformations but not a clinical diagnosis of Aicardi syndrome. Whole-brain three-dimensional fiber tractography was performed, and major white matter tracts were isolated using standard tracking protocols. One Aicardi subject demonstrated an almost complete lack of normal corticocortical connectivity, with only the left inferio
