Presence of itch qualities in mice.

In our clinical study, we found that itching had many different expressions (or qualities), including ' muzumuzu ' (creepy-crawly itching, somewhat like tickling) and 'itch like mosquito bites'. Therefore, we investigated whether there were behavioral differences in response to different pruritogens in mice. In addition, we compared the behavioral characteristics of spontaneous scratching in mice with atopic-like dermatitis. In this study, we used six pruritogens [histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), substance P, α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), protease-activated receptor 2 agonist

Molecular detection and distribution of Treponema species in a commercial dairy cattle herd in Slovakia.

We analyzed the occurrence and distribution of selected Treponema species in dairy cows using 335 interdigital swabs, 335 fecal samples, and 25 surface swabs from bovine digital dermatitis (BDD) lesions. In surface swabs from BDD lesions, Treponema medium (92%), Treponema pedis (88%), and Treponema brennaborense (56%) were the most frequently detected species. Interdigital swabs from BDD-positive cows revealed the presence of T. medium in 40%, T. pedis in 12%, and T. brennaborense in 4% of samples. In the healthy group, T. medium was detected in 21.3%, T. pedis in 4.8%, and T. brennaborense in

Defining the Digital Measurement of Scratching During Sleep or Nocturnal Scratching: Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Digital sensing solutions represent a convenient, objective, relatively inexpensive method that could be leveraged for assessing symptoms of various health conditions. Recent progress in the capabilities of digital sensing products has targeted the measurement of scratching during sleep, traditionally referred to as nocturnal scratching, in patients with atopic dermatitis or other skin conditions. Many solutions measuring nocturnal scratch have been developed; however, a lack of efforts toward standardization of the measure's definition and contextualization of scratching during sl

Intraosseous epidermoid cyst in the digit of an atopic dog with chronic pododermatitis: case report.

Epidermoid cysts are non-neoplastic lesions characterized by a cavity lined by stratified squamous keratinized epithelium and filled with lamellar keratin. While dermal epidermoid cysts are commonly observed in dogs, the intraosseous form is rarely reported. These cysts must be differentiated from other digital lesions involving bone, particularly malignant tumors, as the latter often require more extensive surgical intervention for definitive management. This report describes a case of an intraosseous epidermoid cyst in a dog diagnosed with atopic dermatitis and chronic pododermatitis.

Novel ulcerative leg lesions in yearling lambs: Clinical features, microbiology and histopathology.

Here we report an outbreak of an atypical, ulcerative dermatitis in North Country mule lambs, located in South Gloucestershire, UK. The lesions, which appeared to be contagious, occured between the coronary band and the carpal joint as a focal, well demarcated, circular, ulcerative dermatitis. Histopathological examination of the lesion biopsies revealed areas of ulceration, epidermal hyperplasia, suppurative dermatitis and granulation tissue. Clumped keratohyalin granules and intracellular keratinocyte oedema (ballooning degeneration) were evident within lesion biopsies, consistent with an un

Eyelash length for the diagnosis of atopic dermatitis and ichthyosis vulgaris in children-a case control study.

UNLABELLED: Eyelash trichomegaly (ET) is increased length (≥ 12 mm), curling, pigmentation, or thickness of eyelashes. Among acquired causes, allergic diseases and atopic dermatitis (AD) have been found to be associated with eyelash trichomegaly especially in children; however, to date, this claim has not been studied in detail. To compare the eyelash lengths of AD and ichthyosis vulgaris (IV) patients with those of age- and sex-matched patients with unrelated skin disorders, we measured (with a digital Vernier caliper) and compared the eyelash lengths of AD (n = 58) and IV (n = 31) patients t

Topical effects of molten salt on rat integument: a histological and photometric assessment.

The topical effects of the molten salt 1-methyl-3-ethylimidazolium tetrachloroaluminate (melt) and its organic component, the organic salt 1-methyl-3-ethylimidazolium chloride were tested on rat integument. Evaluation was accomplished using standard histological techniques supplemented with digital analysis using the microscope photometer. Two groups of animals were treated with 1.5 ml of either the melt or the organic salt for 10 consecutive days. A third group treated with the melt had the treated area flushed with running water 5 min after each application (wash). Significant treatment effe

Touraine-Solente-Gole syndrome: The complete form needs to be recognized.

The primary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA) (pachydermoperiostosis) is a rare hereditary disease characterized by skin manifestations (pachydermia), digital clubbing and proliferation of periosteum (periostitis) with sub-periosteal new bone formation. We describe here a case who presented with seborrheic dermatitis and joint pain of both hands on work up matched satisfactorily with the complete form of primary HOA. The identification of secondary form being relatively common among clinicians and hence the importance of recognizing the primary form, which is a difficult to treat condition i

Dermatoglyphics in dermatitis herpetiformis.

In a dermatoglyphic study of 101 patients with dermatitis herpetiformis, comparison was made with their normal relatives and several random normal series. The results of the several comparisons are quite consistent, considering the nature of the data, for the all point to an attenuation of qualitative and quantitative digital and palmar traits in the patients. It is argued that these differences are associated with the disease itself, and that some of the female relatives have an inherited tendency to the disorder, but do not express it. The findings suggest the involvement of genetic factors

Association between milk production, somatic cell count and bacterial dermatoses in three dairy cattle herds.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the correlations between three bacterial dermatoses in cattle, milk production and bulk-milk somatic cell count (BMSCC). DESIGN: Field observations in three dairy cattle herds. METHODS: Milk production, BMSCC, fertility and all herd diseases were recorded by computerised dairy management systems. Each herd was visited twice weekly and the clinical signs, course of diseases and morbidity and culling rates were noted. Bulk-tank milk was sampled twice monthly and analysed for somatic cell count. Bacteriological and histological examinations were carried out from samples

Simulating the mechanics behind sub-optimal mobility and the associated economic losses in dairy production.

Hoof disorders and sub-optimal mobility (SOM) are economically important health issues in dairy farming. Although the dynamics of hoof disorders have an important effect on cow mobility, they have not been considered in previous simulation models that estimate the economic loss of SOM. Furthermore, these models do not consider the varying severities of SOM. The objective of this study was to develop a novel bio-economic simulation model to simulate the dynamics of 8 hoof disorders: digital dermatitis (DD), interdigital hyperplasia (HYP), interdigital dermatitis/heel-horn erosion (IDHE), interd

Silver clear nylon dressing is effective in preventing radiation-induced dermatitis in patients with lower gastrointestinal cancer: results from a phase III study.

PURPOSE: For patients with anal canal and advanced rectal cancer, chemoradiation therapy is a curative modality or an important adjunct to surgery. Nearly all patients treated with chemoradiation experience some degree of radiation-induced dermatitis (RID). Prevention and effective treatment of RID, therefore, is of considerable clinical relevance. The present phase III randomized trial compared the efficacy of silver clear nylon dressing (SCND) with that of standard skin care for these patients. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A total of 42 rectal or anal canal cancer patients were randomized to eith

Harpist's finger: case report of a trauma-induced blister in a beginner harpist and review of string instrument-associated skin problems in musicians.

Musicians may develop skin problems resulting from playing their instruments. Dermatologic conditions in string players usually are secondary to allergic contact dermatitis (allergens include chromium, nickel, colophony, paraphenylenediamine, propolis, and exotic woods) and physical trauma (between either the fingers and the strings or the body and the instrument). A beginner harpist who developed harpist's finger--blister and subsequent callus of her left index finger from repeated trauma between the digit and the harp strings--is described, and string instrument-associated skin problems in m

Bullous eruption caused by an exotic hedgehog purchased as a household pet.

An unusual case of a 37-year-old woman with bullous tinea manuum caused by an infection with Trichophyton mentagrophytes is described. The patient presented with a pruritic erythematous vesicular rash on the right palm and interdigital web spaces between the first and second digits. The preliminary diagnosis was acute contact dermatitis, which was treated with oral and topical corticosteroids. The rash failed to respond to treatment, resulting in tinea incognito. At 2-week follow-up, a potassium hydroxide (KOH) preparation performed in clinic was positive for T mentagrophytes. The suspected so

Treponeme-Associated Hoof Disease of Free-Ranging Elk ( Cervus elaphus) in Southwestern Washington State, USA.

A novel foot disease in free-ranging elk ( Cervus elaphus) in southwestern Washington State emerged in 2008 and spread throughout the region. Initial studies showed adult elk had chronic hoof overgrowth, sole ulcers, and sloughed hoof capsules, but no cause was determined. To identify possible causes and characterize the earliest lesions, 9-, 7-, and 3-month-old elk were collected. Nine-month-old elk had sole ulcers (3/9 elk) and sloughed/overgrown hoof capsules (4/9 elk) similar to adults. Histologically, lesions consisted of coronary, heel bulb, and interdigital ulcers with suppurative infla

Editor's Highlights-September 2026.

Psychodermatology, adolescent mental health, quality-of-life measurement, financial toxicity, and teledermatology all show how dermatology increasingly extends beyond visible lesions. The September issue of the Journal addresses the psychological complexity of aesthetic and medical consultations, the psychiatric burden of atopic dermatitis in adolescence, limitations of a commonly used quality-of-life measurement, the financial toxicity experienced by patients with hidradenitis suppurativa, and the still uneven implementation of teledermatology and teledermoscopy in Europe. Together, these pap
