Shellfish and fish poisoning related to the toxic dinoflagellates.

At least four different species of the toxic dinoflagellates cause shellfish and fish poisoning in the United States: Ptychodiscus brevis, neurotoxic shellfish poisoning; Protogonyaulax catenella and P tamarensis, paralytic shellfish poisoning; and Gambierdiscus toxicus, ciguatera fish poisoning. These three disorders have similar clinical manifestations, primarily neurologic and alimentary. A complete history is essential; confirmation, while dependent on specific laboratory analysis, is usually based on a history of ingestion of fish or shellfish previously associated with these types of poi

Molecular Insights into Nutrient-Driven Regulation of Trophic Strategies and Life-Cycle Shifts in Bloom-Forming Mixotrophic Dinoflagellates.

Research into the molecular machinery of eukaryotic unicellular organisms (protists) offers a unique opportunity to unveil the mechanisms of intricate cellular processes and complete life cycles at the level of a single cell operating as a whole organism. Knowledge of protistan molecular biology and life-cycle shifts as adaptations to varying physical-chemical features of the environment helps resolve important issues like evaluation of the balance between external abiotic triggers and internal molecular drivers of cell development. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of these processes is

Persistent Legacy Effects of Marine Heatwaves on Coral Symbioses.

Obligate endosymbioses between eukaryotes and their single-celled inhabitants form the basis of many ecosystems, yet little is known about the long-term impacts of climate change on them. On coral reefs, extensive studies have shown that climate change-driven heatwaves and other environmental stressors can disrupt the obligate symbiosis between reef-building corals and Symbiodiniaceae, with consequences for coral fitness and survival. However, despite coral symbioses playing a fundamental role in reef resilience to climate change, whether, and at what rate, they recover following heatwave disr

Gymnodinium catenatum blooms in the northern Gulf of California: From massive mortalities of seabirds and marine mammals to socioeconomic impacts.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) of the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum, a producer of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), are a recurrent environmental and socioeconomic problem in the northern Gulf of California (NGC). We describe an extensive HAB that occurred in early 2015 that caused the dead of 1017 seabirds and 249 marine mammals. Also, we analyze bloom recurrence between 2015 and 2024 to identify potential environmental drivers for the development of these phenomena. From January to March 2015, widespread mortality of seabirds and marine mammals was related to an extensive HAB of G. cat

Filter feeding by oysters reduces disease transmission in a marine host-parasite system.

As a mechanism of the dilution effect, predation and filter feeding on parasitic propagules are hypothesized to reduce transmission to susceptible hosts and alter host-parasite interactions. In marine systems, the effect of other community members on the disease dynamics of microparasites in their suitable hosts is poorly known. In a coastal estuarine host-parasite system, we examined how eastern oysters, Crassostrea virginica, affect the transmission of a parasitic dinoflagellate, Hematodinium perezi, to juvenile blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus. We deployed juvenile blue crabs in custom mesh

Dermisichthinium pseudosporum gen. et sp. nov. (Dinophyceae, Suessiaceae): a dinoflagellate parasite in freshwater fish in Wisconsin, USA.

A novel dinoflagellate is described from bluegill Lepomis macrochirus, rock bass Ambloplites rupestris, largemouth bass Micropterus nigricans, and yellow perch Perca flavescens collected from Lundgren Lake and Townsend Flowage, Wisconsin, USA. A new genus, Dermisichthinium gen. nov., is established for this species, D. pseudosporum sp. nov., which produces white spots grossly similar to those caused by Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. Microscopically, however, the vegetative cysts of D. pseudosporum closely resemble Haidadinium ichthyophilum, a parasite of threespine stickleback Gasterosteus acul

The relationship between salmon (Salmo salar) farming and cell abundance of harmful algal taxa.

The effects of nutrient effluents from fish cage aquaculture are an important eutrophication concern. It has been proposed that marine fish farm derived nutrients have the potential to increase phytoplankton abundance and lead to intensification of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), and that these blooms may negatively impact both the finfish and the shellfish industry. This study addressed this hypothesis using farmed salmon biomass in Scottish marine waters (as a proxy for nutrient load added to the water column as a consequence of fish farming) cell abundance of HAB taxa that most frequently impa

Climate change and harmful benthic microalgae.

Sea surface temperatures in the world's oceans are projected to warm by 0.4-1.4 °C by mid twenty-first century causing many tropical and sub-tropical harmful dinoflagellate genera like Gambierdiscus, Fukuyoa and Ostreopsis (benthic harmful algal bloom species, BHABs) to exhibit higher growth rates over much of their current geographic range, resulting in higher population densities. The primary exception to this trend will be in the tropics where temperatures exceed species-specific upper thermal tolerances (30-31 °C) beyond which growth slows significantly. As surface waters warm, migration t

Toxic marine microalgae and noxious blooms in the Mediterranean Sea: A contribution to the Global HAB Status Report.

We review the spatial distribution of toxic marine microalgal species and the impacts of all types of harmful algal events (Harmful Algal Blooms, HABs) in the Mediterranean Sea (MS), including the Black Sea, the Sea of Marmara, coastal lagoons and transitional waters, based on two databases compiled in the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS). Eighty-four potentially toxic species have been detected in the MS (2,350 records), of which 16 described from these waters between 1860 and 2014 and a few suspected to have been introduced. More than half of these species (46) produce toxins th

Transcriptome profiling reveals versatile dissolved organic nitrogen utilization, mixotrophy, and N conservation in the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum shikokuense under N deficiency.

Harmful algal blooms formed by certain dinoflagellate species often occur when environmental nitrogen nutrients (N) are limited. However, the molecular mechanism by which dinoflagellates adapt to low N environments is poorly understood. In this study, we characterized the transcriptomic responses of Prorocentrum shikokuense to N deficiency, along with its physiological impact. Under N deficiency, P. shikokuense cultures exhibited growth inhibition, a reduction in cell size, and decreases in cellular chlorophyll a and nitrogen contents but an increase in carbon content. Accordingly, gene expres

Ciguatera-Causing Dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus spp. (Dinophyceae) in a Subtropical Region of North Atlantic Ocean (Canary Islands): Morphological Characterization and Biogeography.

Dinoflagellates belonging to the genus Gambierdiscus produce ciguatoxins (CTXs), which are metabolized in fish to more toxic forms and subsequently cause ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) in humans. Five species of Gambierdiscus have been described from the Canary Islands, where CTXs in fish have been reported since 2004. Here we present new data on the distribution of Gambierdiscus species in the Canary archipelago and specifically from two islands, La Palma and La Gomera, where the genus had not been previously reported. Gambierdiscus spp. concentrations were low, with maxima of 88 and 29 cells

Physiological and transcriptional responses to inorganic nutrition in a tropical Pacific strain of Alexandrium minutum: Implications for the saxitoxin genes and toxin production.

Saxitoxins (STXs) constitute a family of potent sodium channel blocking toxins, causative agents of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), and are produced by several species of marine dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria. Two STX-core genes, sxtA and sxtG, have been well elucidated in Alexandrium but the expression of these genes under various nutritional modes in tropical species remains unclear. This study investigates the physiological responses of a tropical Pacific strain of Alexandrium minutum growing with nitrate or ammonium, and with various nitrogen to phosphorus (N:P) supply ratios. Utilization of various nitrogen, phosphorus, and selenium compounds by Cochlodinium polykrikoides.

The abilityof Cochlodinium polykrikoides to use various nitrogen, phosphorus, and selenium compounds as a nutrient source was examined in batch culture experiments to obtain biological information on the mechanism of C. polykrikoides bloom formation. C. polykrikoides grew using a variety of organic or inorganic nitrogen sources except for L-proline. Maximum yields of C. polykrikoides were obtained by gradually increasing ammonium from 5 to 20 microM, but the yield was inhibited by addition of more than 50 microM. Growth was observed in media containing various phosphorus sources, such as phosp

Toxic and harmful marine phytoplankton and microalgae (HABs) in Mexican Coasts.

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are becoming an increasing problem to human health and environment (including effects on natural and cultured resources, tourism and ecosystems) all over the world. In Mexico a number of human fatalities and important economic losses have occurred in the last 30 years because of these events. There are about 70 species of planktonic and non-planktonic microalgae considered harmful in Mexican coasts. The most important toxin-producing species are the dinoflagellates Gymnodinium catenatum and Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressum, in the Mexican Pacific, and Karenia br

The effect of elevated temperature on the toxicity of the laboratory cultured dinoflagellate Ostreopsis lenticularis (Dinophyceae).

Ostreopsis lenticularis Fukuyo 1981, is the major benthic dinoflagellate vector implicated in ciguatera fish poisoning in finfish on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico. Clonal laboratory cultures of O. lenticularis (clone 301) exposed to elevated temperatures (30-31 degrees C) for 33 and 54 days showed significant increases in the quantity of extractable toxin they produced as compared to their toxicities versus cells grown at temperatures of 25-26 degrees C. O lenticularis samples collected directly from the field following exposure to elevated temperatures for comparable periods of time also

Shift Towards Syndiniales Prevalence in Protist Communities During a Marine Heatwave.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are becoming more frequent and severe, yet their impact on natural marine protist communities remains poorly understood. Using 18S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, we examined the effects of the extreme 2017/2018 Austral summer MHW on protist communities in three water masses off the southeast coast of New Zealand. During the MHW, alpha diversity declined significantly in Subtropical Waters (Shannon: 1.78 ± 0.42, p = 0.03) and the Front (Shannon: 3.26 ± 0.19, p = 0.05), driven by reduced evenness in Subtropical Waters (Pielou: 0.36 ± 0.06, p = 0.03) and by both richness a

Network Component Analysis Can Identify Potential Axenisation Strategies Circumventing Antibiotic-Use for Phototrophic Eukaryotic Microalgae.

Axenisation of phototrophic eukaryotic microalgae has been studied for over a century, with antibiotics commonly employed to achieve axenic cultures. However, this approach often yields inconsistent outcomes and contributes to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant microbes. A comprehensive analysis of previous reports on axenisation was necessary to identify alternate workflows tailored to each major microalgal group. Literature from scholarly databases was systematically recovered and network component analysis was performed to identify method-clusters commonly reported for the axenisation of

Chemical stimulation sustains bioluminescence of living light materials.

Bioluminescence offers a powerful tool for real-time, label-free sensing for living materials. However, conventional approaches often rely on mechanical stimulation, which is difficult to standardize, localize, and sustain. Here, we introduce a chemical strategy to stimulate and sustain bioluminescence in the marine dinoflagellate Pyrocystis lunula, enabling durable, adaptive, light-emitting living materials. By embedding P. lunula into 3D-printed, alginate scaffolds, we engineered architecturally stable constructs with long-term cellular retention, viability, and light-emitting capacity. Expo
