Evaluating the impact of dyslexia laws on the identification of specific learning disability and dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that impacts word reading accuracy and/or reading fluency. Over half of the states in the USA have passed legislation intended to promote better identification of individuals with dyslexia. To date, no study has been conducted to investigate the potential impact of state laws on the identification of specific learning disability (SLD), and limited data has been presented on the rate at which students in public school settings are identified with dyslexia. The first aim of the current study was to determine if any detectable changes in the identificati

Auditory evoked potential: a proposal for further evaluation in children with learning disabilities.

The information presented in this paper demonstrates the author's experience in previews cross-sectional studies conducted in Brazil, in comparison with the current literature. Over the last 10 years, auditory evoked potential (AEP) has been used in children with learning disabilities. This method is critical to analyze the quality of the processing in time and indicates the specific neural demands and circuits of the sensorial and cognitive process in this clinical population. Some studies with children with dyslexia and learning disabilities were shown here to illustrate the use of AEP in th

Efficacy of lamotrigine in institutionalized, developmentally disabled patients with epilepsy: a retrospective evaluation.

The paper evaluates the efficacy of the newer anticonvulsant lamotrigine in a developmentally disabled patient population. A retrospective evaluation was done at two institutional centres to assess adjunctive lamotrigine (Lamictal) efficacy in a developmentally disabled population. Mean seizure frequency was compared between a 2-month pre-lamotrigine baseline period and a 2-month treatment period. A 3-month lamotrigine titration phase occurred between baseline and treatment periods. Seizure frequency data was obtained from standardized, daily seizure records. Adverse effect data was obtained f

Internal consistency & validity of Indian disability evaluation and assessment scale (IDEAS) in patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: The Indian Disability Evaluation and Assessment Scale (IDEAS) has been recommended for assessment and certification of disability by the Government of India (GOI). However, the psychometric properties of IDEAS as adopted by GOI remain understudied. Our aim, thus, was to study the internal consistency and validity of IDEAS in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: A total of 103 consenting patients with residual schizophrenia were assessed for disability, quality of life (QOL) and psychopathology using the IDEAS, WHO QOL-100 and Positive and Negative symptom scale (PANS

Evaluation of the peripheral nervous system in disability management: practical aspects in lower back pain.

Lower back pain (LBP) is a common condition with profound economic and social consequences. A conservative, symptomatic, goal-oriented management program is advocated by most, emphasizing pain relief and restoration of functional capacity. Still, LBP is recurrent in approximately 50% of patients and up to 5-10% experience chronic intractable pain. This article describes how to evaluate and rehabilitate the patient with spinal impairment (SI). All is summarized in a diagnostic/treatment algorithm as used in the spine rehabilitation center. Causes of LBP, components of the patient history and ph

Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Psychometric Evaluation of the Chinese Version of the Functional Disability Inventory.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain is a major public health issue affecting approximately one-fifth of children and adolescents worldwide, and it is also a common complaint among Chinese adolescents. Despite its impact on daily functioning in this population, culturally adapted tools for assessing pain-related disability are lacking. The Functional Disability Inventory (FDI) is a widely used measure for evaluating functional impairment, but its simplified Chinese version has yet to be validated. This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the FDI into simplified Chinese to assess its reliabilit

Detection of young children in need of reading help. Evaluation of specific reading disability formulas.

To determine whether formula-based definitions of specific reading disability (SRD) were related to the actual classroom performance of children aged 7 1/2, the authors applied five definitions of SRD to a cohort of 243 children. The children were followed from birth and not selected on the basis of cognitive, reading, or academic performance criteria. The authors determined the concurrent validity of each of the formulas by comparing the prediction of each definition to whether the child received additional reading help in the classroom. Although the years behind method was significantly bett

Biases in the evaluation of self-harm in patients with disability due to spinal cord injury.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is a global problem and accurate assessment of risk for self-harm is critical. Even morally principled clinicians can manifest bias when assessing self-harm in patients with physical disabilities such as spinal cord injury (SCI). Assessment of self-harm is an obligation for health care clinicians and overestimating or underestimating risk may undermine a patient's trust in their care, possibly leading to less engagement, increased apathy about having an interest in living, and less adherence to healthy treatment options. CASE PRESENTATION: Introduces readers to three bia

Development of a Smart Ball to Evaluate Locomotor Performance: Application in Adolescents with Intellectual Disabilities.

Adolescents with intellectual disabilities display maladaptive behaviors in activities of daily living because of physical abnormalities or neurological disorders. These adolescents typically exhibit poor locomotor performance and low cognitive abilities in moving the body to perform tasks (e.g., throwing an object or catching an object) smoothly, quickly, and gracefully when compared with typically developing adolescents. Measuring movement time and distance alone does not provide a complete picture of the atypical performance. In this study, a smart ball with an inertial sensor embedded insi

Evaluation and long-term treatment of aberrant behavior displayed by young children with disabilities.

We trained parents to conduct functional analyses and functional communication treatment for 28 young children with developmental disabilities who displayed aberrant behavior. Of this sample, 22 parents conducted treatment for at least 3 months and 11 for 1 year. We conducted single-case analyses of the results of assessment and treatment. The functional analysis identified social functions (positive and negative reinforcement) for 86% (24 of 28) of the children. Treatment resulted in a pre/post decrease in aberrant behavior averaging 87% across the range of children, with the greatest decreas
