[Gender determination based on osteometric characteristics of the upper and lower extremities by discriminant analysis].

The authors studied the osteological collection of the Chair of Antropology of the Moscow State University. The results of measurement of length of long tubular bones and articular parts of scapula and pelvis were statistically treated. The complex of discriminant models calculated by the Fisher's method is recommended for the sex identification. The diagnostic accuracy is 74 - 83.5% (separated bones) and 85.7 - 95.2% (complex of bones of upper and lower extremities).

Discriminant analysis of anthropometric and biomotor variables among elite adolescent female athletes in four sports.

The aim of this study was to identify anthropometric and biomotor variables that discriminated among groups of elite adolescent female athletes aged 14.3 +/- 1.3 years (mean +/- s) from four different sports (tennis, n = 15; swimming, n = 23; figure skating, n = 46; volleyball, n = 16). The anthropometric variables included body mass, height, bi-epicondylar breadth of the distal extremity of the humerus and femur, maximal girth of the calf and biceps and the sum of five adipose skinfolds. The biomotor variables were maximal aerobic power, muscular endurance and flexibility of the trunk. Discri

The use of multivariate discriminant analysis in the antenatal detection of fetal neural tube defects.

Early second trimester amniotic fluid is classified by stepwise discriminant analysis involving the computer program BMDP77, based upon biochemical analyses for alpha-fetoprotein and eight other easily assayed variables. The outcome of about 800 pregnancies has been predicted on this basis, over 80 of which were associated with fetal neural tube defects. Classification is shown to be more reliable than using alpha-fetoprotein and gestational age alone. Although in practice this approach has now been superceded by the introduction of the analysis of acetylcholine-esterase isoenzyme activity in

Early prediction of symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus from perinatal risk factors: a discriminant analysis model.

A scoring system based on discriminant analysis was devised to predict, within 24 hours after birth, whether or not a premature infant will subsequently develop a symptomatic PDA. Five risk factors including birth weight, the diagnosis of hyaline membrane disease, intrauterine growth retardation, acute perinatal stress, and treatment with distending airway pressure were reduced to a discriminant score which separated infants with symptomatic PDA from infants without symptomatic PDA. Based on this score, the likelihood that an individual infant would later develop symptomatic PDA could be expre

Discriminant diagnostic validity of paediatric bipolar disorder screening tests: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorders (BD) are among the most significantly impairing of childhood and adolescent psychiatric disorders. Although BD symptoms may begin in adolescence, they are frequently not diagnosed until adulthood, and accordingly BD scales could aid diagnostic assessment in paediatric populations. This review aims to synthesis the evidence for the accuracy of BD symptom index tests for discriminating BD from non-BD (other diagnoses or healthy controls) in paediatric population. Additionally, several theoretically relevant moderators of diagnostic accuracy were evaluated. METHOD

Linear discriminant analysis of phenotypic data for classifying autism spectrum disorder by diagnosis and sex.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition characterized by social and communication differences. Recent research suggests ASD affects 1-in-44 children in the United States. ASD is diagnosed more commonly in males, though it is unclear whether this diagnostic disparity is a result of a biological predisposition or limitations in diagnostic tools, or both. One hypothesis centers on the 'female protective effect,' which is the theory that females are biologically more resistant to the autism phenotype than males. In this examination, phenotypic data were acquired and combined fr

Fisher discriminant analysis for classification of autism spectrum disorders based on folate-related metabolism markers.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are neurodevelopmental disorders with an increasing prevalence but lack reliable biomarkers for early diagnosis. The present study investigated 13 serological metabolites and 2 genetic variants related to folate metabolism in a total of 89 ASD cases and 89 matched controls. Fisher discriminant analysis was used to establish the classification model to recognize ASD cases and controls. Ten metabolites were significantly different between the groups, of which six metabolites were used as predictors to determine the discriminant prediction model: vitamin B12, 5-me

Partial Least Square Discriminant Analysis Discovered a Dietary Pattern Inversely Associated with Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Risk.

Evidence on the association between dietary component, dietary pattern and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is scarce. A major challenge is the high degree of correlation among dietary constituents. We aimed to identify dietary pattern associated with NPC and to illustrate the dose-response relationship between the identified dietary pattern scores and the risk of NPC. Taking advantage of a matched NPC case-control study, data from a total of 319 incident cases and 319 matched controls were analyzed. Dietary pattern was derived employing partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) perfor

Automated detection of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome from oxygen saturation recordings using linear discriminant analysis.

Nocturnal polysomnography (PSG) is the gold-standard to diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). However, it is complex, expensive, and time-consuming. We present an automatic OSAS detection algorithm based on classification of nocturnal oxygen saturation (SaO(2)) recordings. The algorithm makes use of spectral and nonlinear analysis for feature extraction, principal component analysis (PCA) for preprocessing and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) for classification. We conducted a study to characterize and prospectively validate our OSAS detection algorithm. The population under stu

Discriminant analysis between malignant mesothelioma and reactive mesothelium using nuclear three-dimensional analysis is useful for morphologically suspicious cases.

OBJECTIVE: Morphological discrimination between malignant mesothelioma (MM) and reactive mesothelium (RM) is often difficult. Stereological analysis of nuclear luminance using centrifuged smear samples from coelomic fluid and discriminant analysis based on Mahalanobis distance may help to more accurately discriminate between MM and RM. In the present study, discriminant analysis was conducted on cytological specimens using the auto-smear method in a blinded manner with regard to histological results. STUDY DESIGN: Coelomic fluid samples of 28 cases, cytologically diagnosed using the auto-smea

Discriminant analysis followed by unsupervised cluster analysis including exosomal cystatins predict presence of chronic rhinosinusitis, phenotype, and disease severity.

BACKGROUND: Cystatins are epithelial protease inhibitors that participate in sinonasal immunity and inflammation. Nasal mucus-derived exosomes (NMDEs) are small vesicles secreted by epithelial cells that carry protein cargo reflective of their host cell. NMDEs have been used as a noninvasive biomarker source to study chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) proteomics with superior sensitivity to whole mucus. The purpose of this study was to noninvasively quantify exosomal cystatins in a heterogenous population to determine their utility in predicting phenotype and disease severity.

Linear discriminant analysis on electrocardiogram achieved classification of cardiac involvement status in amyloid light-chain amyloidosis.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is the most crucial determinant of amyloid light-chain (AL) amyloidosis patients' prognosis. We attempted cardiac involvement prediction by 12‑lead electrocardiograph (ECG) and echocardiography (UCG) in AL amyloidosis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty patients with histologically confirmed AL amyloidosis underwent gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (Gd-MRI), and CA was assessed using late gadolinium enhancement. ECG and UCG parameters were measured on admission. Fisher's linear discriminant analysis was used to create a model for predictin

Return-to-Work Screening by Linear Discriminant Analysis of Heart Rate Variability Indices in Depressed Subjects.

Using a linear discriminant analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) indices, the present study sought to verify the usefulness of autonomic measurement in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients by assessing the feasibility of their return to work after sick leave. When reinstatement was scheduled, patients' HRV was measured using a wearable electrocardiogram device. The outcome of the reinstatement was evaluated at one month after returning to work. HRV indices including high- and low-frequency components were calculated in three conditions within a session: initial rest, mental task, and r

Optimizing the electrodiagnostic accuracy in Guillain-Barré syndrome subtypes: Criteria sets and sparse linear discriminant analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To optimize the electrodiagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) subtypes at first study. METHODS: The reference electrodiagnosis was obtained in 53 demyelinating and 45 axonal GBS patients on the basis of two serial studies and results of anti-ganglioside antibodies assay. We retrospectively employed sparse linear discriminant analysis (LDA), two existing electrodiagnostic criteria sets (Hadden et al., 1998; Rajabally et al., 2015) and one we propose that additionally evaluates duration of motor responses, sural sparing pattern and defines reversible conduction failure (RCF) in m

Geographically weighted discriminant analysis of environmental conditions associated with Rift Valley fever outbreaks in South Africa.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic arboviral infection that has occurred across Africa and parts of the Middle East. Geographically weighted discriminant analysis (GWDA) is a spatially-adaptive extension of traditional discriminant analysis (DA) which has rarely been applied to infectious disease epidemiology research. This study compares the classification performance of GWDA and traditional DA when used to distinguish between locations where livestock are at risk or are not at risk for acquiring RVF virus (RVFV) using 699 case reports of RVF (affecting 18,894 animals) from two outbreaks i
