Improving Public Health Policy by Comparing the Public Response during the Start of COVID-19 and Monkeypox on Twitter in Germany: A Mixed Methods Study.

Little is known about monkeypox public concerns since its widespread emergence in many countries. Tweets in Germany were examined in the first three months of COVID-19 and monkeypox to examine concerns and issues raised by the public. Understanding views and positions of the public could help to shape future public health campaigns. Few qualitative studies reviewed large datasets, and the results provide the first instance of the public thinking comparing COVID-19 and monkeypox. We retrieved 15,936 tweets from Germany using query words related to both epidemics in the first three months of eac

Artificial Intelligence and Health Misinformation in Healthcare: Opportunities, Limitations and Future Directions.

The rapid digitalisation of health information has transformed how individuals access medical knowledge but has also facilitated the widespread dissemination of health misinformation. The World Health Organization describes this phenomenon as an infodemic, characterised by an overabundance of information that includes both accurate and misleading content, making it difficult for individuals to identify reliable sources of health advice. Exposure to misinformation has been linked to vaccine hesitancy, reduced adherence to public health guidance and increased engagement with unverified treatment

Vaccination perspectives among nurses in a rural, frontier state.

BACKGROUND: During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the nursing profession, particularly in rural and frontier states, faced substantial challenges due to vaccine hesitancy. Higher hesitancy among nurses compared to other health professionals may have contributed to elevated infection and death rates in one rural, frontier state. PURPOSE: This study investigated vaccine-related attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions among practicing nurses, faculty, and students in a state heavily affected by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey assessed nurses' vaccine-related attitudes, b

Mapping cancer literacy levels, barriers and facilitators, educational initiatives and misinformation narratives: multiple scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer literacy (CL) is essential for enabling informed decision-making, prevention, early detection and adherence to treatment. However, disparities in CL across Europe, coupled with the spread of disinformation, limit equitable access to cancer care. This protocol describes a collection of scoping reviews to document the state of CL, misinformation narratives and education and training initiatives and identify barriers and facilitators. This work is embedded within the activities of the Beating Cancer Inequalities through Literacy in Europe project and encompasses nine consorti

European Code Against Cancer, 5th edition - cancer-causing infections and related interventions.

The main infections that cause cancer in the European Union (EU) are Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Altogether, in 2022, these infections accounted for ~ 5% of all cancers in the EU, mainly of the stomach, cervix uteri and liver. The largest burden of infection-caused cancers was found in the south of the EU and near the eastern border. Substantial progress in the efficacy of interventions against these infections has been made since the release of the 4th edition of the Europ

Who Gets Caught in the Web of Lies?: Understanding Susceptibility to Phishing Emails, Fake News Headlines, and Scam Text Messages.

OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated if the same users are vulnerable to phishing emails, scam text messages, and fake news headlines and if there are universal predictors of susceptibility for all three tasks. BACKGROUND: Theoretical research provides support for the notion that the same users likely fall for multiple forms of online deception. However, no research has directly compared susceptibility for various online deceptions (eg phishing, disinformation, scam text messages) within the same group of users. METHOD: Participants completed an online survey consisting of demographic q

SARS-CoV-2 the ASIA virus (Autoimmune/autoinflammatory Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants), the risk of infertility and vaccine hesitancy.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 has had a catastrophic impact on the world. The current death toll far exceeds 6 million and large numbers of patients are experiencing long-term medical and psychiatric morbidity from the infection. The immunopathology of severe COVID-19 is now better understood. In severely affected patients, there is a chaotic, destructive immune response triggered by SARS-CoV-2, where autoimmunity features prominently. AREAS COVERED: COVID-19 vaccines ensure a coordinated, balanced immune response to future SARS-CoV-2 infection. The rapid global deployment of effective COVID-19 vacc

Online Information as a Double-Edged Sword: A Multilevel Analysis of Vaccination Skepticism Based on ISSP 2021.

This study examines the relationship between internet use and vaccine scepticism, focusing on the ambivalent role of digital information environments and digital health literacy (DHL). While the internet provides easy access to vaccination-related information, frequent internet use may also increase exposure to misinformation and disinformation. Accordingly, both positive and negative effects of internet-based information seeking are hypothesized. In contrast, higher levels of DHL are expected to reduce vaccine scepticism. The study also investigates the influence of healthcare system quality,

Appeals of Deceit from the Tobacco Companies: Rejecting Tobacco Industry Influence in Thailand.

INTRODUCTION: The tobacco industry goes to great lengths to identify its target audience and provide incentives for tobacco use. It often does so through disinformation, purposely deceiving its customers. There is evidence that the behaviors of social movements can replace shallow appeals with genuine social motivations. While stories of communication, recognition, and mutual support can arise as anecdotal examples, the enduring strengths of a social commitment are also worth examining. METHOD: This review examines the people, events, and accomplishments of tobacco control efforts in Thailand

From PrEP-Related Mistrust to Trusted Prevention Ecosystems: Implementation Priorities Following Simon et al. and Jaiswal et al.

PrEP-related medical mistrust is not simply a lack of trust; it is a relational, historically rooted and continuously reinforced response to perceived institutional betrayal, everyday discrimination, and inequitable prevention systems. Building on recent AIDS and Behavior articles by Simon et al. and Jaiswal et al. describing PrEP-related mistrust, distrust, and misinformation among Black sexual minority men and socioeconomically diverse young sexual minority men from multiple racial and ethnic groups in the United States, we argue that the field must move from documenting mistrust to engineer

Change in influenza vaccine uptake among adults in the United States from May 2020 to October 2024.

Influenza vaccines are essential against the spread of influenza virus. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends vaccination to all eligible individuals over 6 months of age; however, uptake remains suboptimal nationally. We do not fully understand the current nuances of influenza vaccine uptake, nor how it has been affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. From 2020-2024, we conducted two distinct, cross-sectional surveys assessing influenza vaccine uptake among US adults. A census-matched national sample was recruited by online

Community Assessment of Hurricane Helene Recovery in Rural Western North Carolina.

Rural communities face unique challenges after a disaster as a result of overlapping vulnerabilities related to limited housing and transportation infrastructure, employment or income loss, and fewer emergency response and recovery resources. Hurricane Helene (Southeast Coast, USA; 2024) made landfall in Florida as a Category-4 hurricane, later impacting Western North Carolina with severe flooding, landslides, and hurricane-force winds. Communications and transportation were interrupted for months, leading to disinformation, recovery disruptions, and a loss of trust. To assess household impact

Healthy beverages in a sugary world: Dutch adolescents' perspectives on water and other healthy beverages; a qualitative multi-method study.

Despite extensive research on adolescents' sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, little is known about their perceptions, barriers and facilitators in relation to healthier beverages. The aim of this study is twofold: (1) to explore how adolescents conceptualise healthy beverages; (2) to gain a holistic understanding of the lived experiences that shape their behaviour with respect to healthy beverages. We used a qualitative multi-method approach, combining street intercept interviews, an interactive group session, and semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Sixty Dutch adolescents (aged 12-16) a

How does a national blood operator detect early infectious disease signals affecting blood and cellular therapy product safety and sufficiency?

BACKGROUND: Public access to up-to-date information on infectious diseases and outbreaks has grown rapidly with the advent of artificial intelligence platforms. While this information can improve patient care and support research, the sheer volume of available data coupled with the challenge of identifying misinformation and disinformation can be overwhelming. A key challenge is managing large information volumes and identifying early, subtle signals that may indicate risks or opportunities to prevent infection. The aim of this manuscript is to explain how a national blood operator identifies
