Influence of the source and molecular weights on sulfathiazole/sulfadiazine binding in sedimentary dissolved organic matter.

Sedimental dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a crucial role in the migration of antibiotics in a lake environment, which is strongly associated with its physicochemical properties influenced by temporal and spatial variations. This study systematically investigated the binding behavior of sulfathiazole (ST) and sulfadiazine (SD) to DOM across different molecular weights (MWs) in sediments from Poyang Lake using multiple spectroscopic techniques. Results showed that the MW fractions of DOM from the onset of the dry season were higher than those before flooding. Additionally, key carbon param

Dark Reduction of Hg(II) by Dissolved Organic Matter Derived from Aging Microplastics: Mechanisms and Implications.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a critical role in the environmental cycling and transformation of mercury (Hg), primarily due to its strong reducing and complexing properties toward mercuric Hg(II). Microplastics-derived DOM (MPs-DOM), particularly that released during photoaging, represents an emerging source of DOM in aquatic environments. However, its capacity to mediate Hg(II) transformation remains largely unexplored. This study investigated dark reduction of Hg(II) by DOM released from aging polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, and polylactic acid under simulated environmental conditio

Dissolved organic matter promoted hydroxyl radical formation and phenanthrene attenuation during oxygenation of iron-pillared montmorillonites.

The oxygenation of Fe(II)-bearing minerals for hydroxyl radicals (HO•) formation and contaminant attenuation receives increasing attentions. However, information on dissolved organic matter (DOM) with different types, concentrations, and molecular weights (MWs) in manipulating HO• formation and contaminant attenuation during mineral oxygenation remain unclear. In this study, four iron-pillared montmorillonites (IPMs) and two DOM samples [e.g., humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA)] were prepared to explore the HO• formation and phenanthrene attenuation during the oxygenation of IPMs in the pr

Coupling of Dissolved Organic Matter Molecular Fractionation with Iron and Sulfur Transformations during Sulfidation-Reoxidation Cycling.

Iron (oxyhydr)oxides and organic matter (OM) are intimately associated in natural environments, and their fate might be linked to sulfur during sulfidation-reoxidation cycling. However, the coupling of DOM molecular fractionation with Fe and S transformations following a full sulfidation-reoxidation cycle remains poorly understood. Here, we reacted Fh and Fh-OM associations with S(-II) anaerobically and then exposed the sulfidic systems to air. S(-II) preferentially reacted with Fh to form inorganic S (e.g., mackinawite, S0, and S22-) over being incorporated into OM as organic S and therefore

Linking pharmaceutical residues to dissolved organic matter and aquatic bacterial communities in a highly urbanized bay.

Pharmaceuticals are causing environmental concerns associated with their widespread distribution in aquatic ecosystems. The environmental fate and behavior of pharmaceutical residues are related to dissolved organic matter and bacterial communities, both of which are strongly influenced by human activities. However, the relationships among pharmaceutical pollution, dissolved organic matter pool, and bacterial community structure under the pressure of human activities are still unclear, especially in highly urbanized bay areas. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and distribution of 3

Characteristics and phytotoxicity of hydrochar-derived dissolved organic matter: Effects of feedstock type and hydrothermal temperature.

The dissolved organic matter (DOM) with high mobility and reactivity plays a crucial role in soil. In this study, the characteristics and phytotoxicity of DOM released from the hydrochars prepared from different feedstocks (cow manure, corn stalk and Myriophyllum aquaticum) under three hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) temperatures (180, 200 and 220°C) were evaluated. The results showed that the hydrochars had high dissolved organic carbon content (20.15 to 37.65 mg/g) and its content showed a gradual reduction as HTC temperature increased. Three fluorescent components including mixed substance

A study of peatland-derived dissolved organic matter from headstream to sea using multiple analytical tools.

The River Thurso, North Scotland, receives substantial terrestrial deliveries of dissolved organic matter (DOM) leached from Europe's most extensive blanket bogs. The relatively short distance between peatlands and coastal ocean offers potential for research to investigate source-to-sea processing of terrigenous dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Here, we determined DOC concentrations in the bulk (< 0.4 μm), truly dissolved (< 5 kDa), and colloidal fraction (5 kDa - 0.4 μm) as well as DOM absorbance and fluorescence spectra during two river catchment surveys and two corresponding coastal plume su

Assessing environmental fate of hexavalent chromium as influenced by fractionation of ferrihydrite with dissolved organic matter.

The dynamic interactions among iron (Fe) oxides, dissolved organic matter (DOM) and toxic trace metals play crucial roles in risk assessment and environmental remediation. Although the inhibitory effects of DOM on the iron oxides transformation process have been studied previously, there is still a lack of mechanistic and quantitative understanding on the kinetics of Cr(VI) and ferrihydrite transformation in the present of DOM. In this study, we investigated the fractionation process of DOM on ferrihydrite and its influence on the fate of Cr(VI) and transformation of ferrihydrite. The result o

Changes in groundwater dissolved organic matter character in a coastal sand aquifer due to rainfall recharge.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in groundwater is fundamentally important with respect to biogeochemical reactions, global carbon cycling, heavy metal transport, water treatability and potability. One source of DOM to groundwater is from the transport of organic matter from the vadose zone by rainfall recharge. Changes in precipitation patterns associated with natural climate variability and climate change are expected to alter the load and character of organic matter released from these areas, which ultimately impacts on groundwater quality and DOM treatability. In order to investigate potenti

The influence of natural dissolved organic matter on herbicide toxicity to marine microalgae is species-dependent.

Microalgae, which are the foundation of aquatic food webs, may be the indirect target of herbicides used for agricultural and urban applications. Microalgae also interact with other compounds from their environment, such as natural dissolved organic matter (DOM), which can itself interact with herbicides. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of natural DOM on the toxicity of three herbicides (diuron, irgarol and S-metolachlor), singly and in ternary mixtures, to two marine microalgae, Chaetoceros calcitrans and Tetraselmis suecica, in monospecific, non-axenic cultures. Effects on growth,

Simultaneous removal of dissolved organic matter and nitrate from sewage treatment plant effluents using photocatalytic membranes.

The residual dissolved organic matter (DOM) and nitrate in sewage treatment plant (STP) effluent have potential negative impacts on the aqueous environment. To that end, we used formic acid (FA) to enhance the photochemical behavior of the photocatalytic membrane for the simultaneous removal of DOM and nitrate from secondary STP effluent. Effluent samples were collected from two different biological treatment processes, Anaerobic-Oxic and Anaerobic-Anoxic-Oxic-membrane bioreactor, respectively. Through Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance-mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) analysis, we found t

Assessing the utility of dissolved organic matter photoreactivity as a predictor of in situ methylmercury concentration.

Methylmercury (MeHg) bioaccumulation is a growing concern in ecosystems worldwide. The absorption of solar radiation by dissolved organic matter (DOM) and other photoreactive ligands can convert MeHg into less toxic forms of mercury through photodemethylation. In this study, spectral changes and photoreactivity of DOM were measured to assess the potential to control photoreactions and predict in situ MeHg concentration. Water samples collected from a series of lakes in southwestern Nova Scotia in June, August, and September were exposed to controlled ultraviolet-A (UV-A) radiation for up to 24

Role of Dissolved Organic Matter in the Release of Chromium from Schwertmannite: Kinetics, Repartition, and Mechanisms.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an important factor influencing mineral biogeochemistry, although the role of labile DOM in the release of chromium (Cr) from schwertmannite, a mineral with high surface area, is unclear. In this study, the interaction of DOM with synthetic CrO-schwertmannite was investigated to better understand the potential fate of Cr in high-DOM environments. Minerals and their products were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Hybrid ferrihydrite-MF/UF membrane filtration for the simultaneous removal of dissolved organic matter and phosphate.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) and phosphorus promote microbial regrowth in water distribution networks. Ferrihydrite (Fh) has a high adsorption affinity with DOM and phosphate. Hence, a lab-scale unit of the hybrid Fh-MF/UF membrane filtration system was used to evaluate membrane fouling and the removal efficiency of DOM and phosphate. Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM) was used as a surrogate for DOM in natural water. The Fh-membrane system demonstrated removal rates of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), UV254 and phosphate up to 50%, 80% and 90%, respectively, at the Fh dose of 17.5

Effects of reverse osmosis isolation on reactivity of naturally occurring dissolved organic matter in physicochemical processes.

A field reverse osmosis system was used to isolate dissolved organic matter (DOM) from two lacustrine and two riverine surface water sources. The rejection of DOM was on the order of 99% and did not vary significantly with pressure. A simple mass balance model using a single measured value of rejection predicted the concentration within the closed-loop isolation system. The effect of operating pressure and solution flux on mass recovery of DOM was evaluated in laboratory and field trials. Under controlled laboratory conditions, >99% of a lacustrine DOM could be accounted for. A fraction of the

Exogenous dissolved organic matter redirects humic carbon fate at mineral interfaces through pre-contact molecular conditioning.

Mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) formation is commonly interpreted from the moment organic matter contacts mineral surfaces, emphasizing mineral reactivity, molecular functional groups, or adsorption strength. However, in soils receiving continuous organic inputs, humic precursors may first coexist with exogenous dissolved organic matter (DOM) in pore water and thin water films before mineral contact. Whether this upstream liquid-phase interaction reorganizes humic matter and redirects its subsequent mineral-interface fate remains poorly understood. Here, we introduce the concept of a

Source-dependent of dissolved organic matter interfacial transport and component fractionation retention in NAPL-contaminated aquifers.

Contaminated aquifers can alter the geochemical behavior and fate of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in groundwater systems. To date, research has almost entirely focused on the contaminants themselves, while the mechanisms by which DOM sources regulate their interfacial retention and transport within contaminated source areas remain unclear. This study uses field data from a coking site to confirm that the non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) zone is a hotspot for DOM accumulation in contaminated subsurface environments. Through integrated column and microfluidic experiments, we found that DOM is s
